Ian McKellan Speaks Out on The Hobbit

Movie Picture
Gandalf the White speaks! In his latest responses to fan queries on his E-Post, the iconic actor talked about the upcoming The Hobbit and The Hobbit Sequel and his possible involvement. Here's what the wizard/knight had to say.

So has it come to pass, good Sir McKellen? Shall the dreaming masses with their musty books and their blackened pipes at long last hear those immortal words issue from under that famous nose? "Yes, yes, my dear sir-and I know your name, Mr. Bilbo Baggins. And you do know my name, though you don't remember that I belong to it. I am Gandalf, and Gandalf means me! To think I should have lived to be good-morninged by Belladonna Took's son, as if I was selling buttons at the door!" Looking about, I find I share the same hopes as millions of others, so I ask, a single query in a chorus... Will you again be our Gandalf in The Hobbit now that the deal is settled?

Ian McKellan: Yes I will, if Peter Jackson and I have anything to do with it, he being the producer and me being, on the whole, a very lucky actor. I've just read your quote out loud - fabulous speech.

Have you been approached yet by Peter Jackson or anyone else about reprising your wonderful role as Gandalf for the two upcoming The Hobbit movies. I read that principal photography begins in 2009, and I can't imagine those movies without you!

Ian McKellan: Encouragingly, Peter and Fran Walsh have told me they couldn't imagine The Hobbit without their original Gandalf. Their confidence hasn't yet been confirmed by the director Guillermo del Toro but I am keeping my diary free for 2009!

We'll have more on any The Hobbit developments as they arise. The Hobbit and The Hobbit Sequel and set to film back-to back with the first slated for a 2010 release while the sequel will follow in 2011.

I love how people like this rarebloodtype guy below me come into a forum and bitch and moan about things that they clearly don't know anything about.
The story is about 1 hobbit, 13 dwarves, and a wizard who go on an journey to find treasure located in the Lonely Mountain and all the adventures they encounter along the way, not to mention the huge battle they end up in as a result. Hardly a story that focuses purely on Hobbits. Its called a book, pick one up and read it before you bitch about it.

come on. he was third main role in the day after tomorrow.and fourth main role in lord of war. and 4th main role in the fifth element. i think its time he has a chance to be the main character.

  23. DARKBREATHER

I am not so much familiar with the books, so if Bilbo is already old here then Holm would be fine, though I can't imagine him in a lead role, he is a great actor, but not the type that leads a movie...

    5 years agoby @darkbreatherFlag

  24. the Narrator

i think they should cast Hugh Jackman as Bard. not bad. sorry. lol. and Orlando bloom should have a few minute cameo in the battle of the five armies. wow. i am drooling.

  25. the Narrator

i think they should cast Hugh Jackman as Bad. that would be crazy.

  26. HAPPYJACK

IT WOULD BE GOOD 2 SEE IAN HOLM AS BILBO!

    5 years agoby @happyjackFlag

  27. the Narrator

DUDE. IAN HOLM THE ORIGINAL GUY IN THE MOVIE SHOULD STAY AS BILBO. REMEMBER THAT HE WAS LIKE 60 IN THE HOBBIT, AND THE RING KEPT HIM LOOKING YOUNG. SO JUST MAKE HIM A BIT YOUNGER LOOKING LIKE IN THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING INTO, AND THEN YOU HAVE YOUR BILBO FOR THIS FILM. I LOOK VERY MUCH 4WARD TO THE DWARVES CASTING.

    5 years agoby @narratorFlag

  28. DARKBREATHER

well.. I just new that the Hobbit takes place before TLOR, so Bilbo should be younger, that's why I suggest Jack Black for the role....
    Just Kiddin'
I suggest Michael Jackson, but before he became white...

    5 years agoby @darkbreatherFlag

  29. the Narrator

YEAH. IAN SHOULD BE CAST AS gANDALF. HE WAS AWESOME. ALSO I KNOW HE WILL CAUSE DEL TOO IS NOT AN IDIOT. LOOK 4WARD TO THIS. HOWEVER I WISH PETER WOULD DIRECT INSTEAD. BUT HEY HE IS DIRETING TINTIN. SO ITS ALMOST OK. ALMOST.

    5 years agoby @narratorFlag

  30. Shadow Of The Day

I hope Guillermo del Toro will cast Ian McKellan as Gandalf, with out Ian McKellan there is no one better to play this role.
