Hugh Jackman Has Real Steel

According to Variety, DreamWorks Steven Spielberg and Stacey Snider have greenlit Real Steel. This is the first film the studio has made since locking in $650 million from both J.P. Morgan Securities and Reliance Big Pictures. They also nabbed and an additional $175 million from Disney, who will serve as DreamWorks distributor.

Real Steel will star star Hugh Jackman. The film is going to be directed by Shawn Levy. It is based on a short story by Richard Matheson. The planned budget is $80 million.

DreamWorks originally bought the project, from writer Dan Gilroy, in 2005 for $850,000. John Gatins rewrote the most recent draft.

Real Steel focuses on a fighter who has to reinvent himself when human boxers are replaced by robots. Jackman is going to play a struggling Robot Boxing promoter. He finds a discarded robot that always seems to come up on the winning end. Jackman's character also realizes he has a 11-year-old son, and they grow closer as the robot fights its way toward the top.

Production will start on this project in June.

Real Steel was released October 7th, 2011 and stars Hugh Jackman, Dakota Goyo, Evangeline Lilly, Anthony Mackie, Kevin Durand, Hope Davis, James Rebhorn, Marco Ruggeri. The film is directed by Shawn Levy.

Nope... it's crap! By adding the son into the story, Spielberg/Snider only partially rips off an old Twilight Zone episode.
