Hugh Jackman has officially confirmed that Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky will helm the upcoming Marvel sequel X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2. The actor revealed the news to New York Magazine at last night's Enduring Vision gala held by Elton John.

Hugh Jackman is currently bulking up to reprise his role as Logan in the anticipated sequel, which he claims will be much darker than 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine. It won't be the "usual" X-Men movie this time around, Jackman promises:

"This is, hopefully for me, going to be out of the box. It's going to be the best one. Well, I would say that, but I really do feel that, and I feel this is going to be very different. This is Wolverine. This is not Popeye. He's kind of dark. But, you know, this is a change of pace. Christopher McQuarrie, who wrote The Usual Suspects, has written the script, so that'll give you a good clue. [Darren Aronofsky's] going to make it fantastic. There's going to be some meat on the bones. There will be something to think about as you leave the theater, for sure."

Hugh Jackman and Darren Aronofsky are already in the middle of pre-production on X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2, with the sequel set to begin shooting in early 2011.

The Wolverine comes to theaters July 26th, 2013 and stars Hugh Jackman. The film is directed by James Mangold.

I do like Hugh as an actor but not as Logan, he's such a pretty boy. Bill Compton has the right look, movie magic can reduce his size. I wonder why they didn't do that with Hugh.

To tell the truth I've never seen an ugly man on the big screen. I guess ugly men are needed on TV more. That sounds like a good title for a TV series Ugly Men.

On a sort of unrelated note, I was thinking that if they ever rebooted Wolverine, they should have Stephen Moyer (Bill Compton from True Blood) play him. There are times in that show when he gives a look that's so deliciously bad ass.

@Diaigma, what if you saw this film simply as a Wolverine film only, as if it were a prelude to a future Xmen franchise, and not a prequel. Would you see it then? If it turned out really good?

    thank you @TheMime and @REAL.

@Todd89,sadly that will most likely be the case.they won't want to back a R rated violent wolverine movie.it's sad cause that's exactly what's needed.we'll see what happens.maybe darren can deliver a movie that'll still be good on a PG-13 level.TDK pushed the PG-13 rating pretty far.maybe darren can do the same.

Darren will make this great but the thing is the studio will hate it and so will Marvel. This won't be rated R, it'll be scraped and torn to bits by Marvel, then put back together for a PG !3 rating. Us fans will go to see it, some will hate it and some will like it.

Wolverine, Ghost Rider, Blade films are suppose to have blood in them but Marvel refuses to have them as rated R. Punisher franchise will be a straight to DVD like the last two.

so it should be called "Wolverine Wrestles"... i know there are a lot of dark themes and such in this, but that's one of the major flaws of the first... trying to be something it wasn't. it lost its course and purpose and otherwise sucked. this one looks like it wants to make wolverine a drama queen. probably done with this "spinoff". looking forward to "x-men: first class" - hope they get it right.

let's face it,it wouldn't be that hard to make a better movie than the first one.that movie is a borderline abomination to film and a disgrace to the character of wolverine.but enough bashing the first movie, there's already been enough of that in the past.i'll be honest and say that this article excites me a little bit,but they are REALLY gonna have to step it up in the sequel to get the bad taste out of my mouth.they can start by making it bloody.not obnoxious bloody, but realistic.he's cutting people with blades...c'mon...a good amount of bloody wouldn't hurt.i'd really like it to have an R rating.that would begin to rebuild my confidence.but all that is juvenile compared to the dire need of a solid story, good dialogue, and convincing acting.the first contained none of those.i just hope this movie turns out to be what the first one should've been: a gritty, dramatic, dark comic book film.wolverine deserves nothing less.i hope and pray darren can deliver as well as hugh.

  22. The Narrator: The Better Man

@Bane, that would be cool if they went that route. :)

Anyways, all the plus's for this sequel:
    Director: Aronofsky
    Writer: McQuarrie
    Star: Jackman
    Setting: Japan
    Studio: Fox

.. ... ..wait, Fox!? F*ck, we're not out of the woods yet. :P
Totally kidding. But yeah, this film seems to really be shaping up. Didn't expect to by this hyped about a sequel to the fan disgrace that Origins was.

the closest we got to see the gritty, down and dirty wolverine was the attack on the mansion in X2, lets hope they up the ante on this one...bring in silver samurai as a yakuza gangster whos in love mariko as is logan, and they battle it out for her love in his Silver samurai costume and logan in a sort of samurai armor that resembles his costume from the comics, mask and pointed boots and all...sorry wishfull thinking here :]

This news makes me really happy. The X Men were always my favorite and while Nightcrawler is my fav x man i really think wolverine deserved "meat on the bones" the first time around. Wolverine has and always will be a very complex character. Arafronsky is perfect for that sort of tone.
