Howard Shore returns to Middle Earth to score The Hobbit
"We've talked about making these movies for many years, at least since 2002. It looks like finally it's going to be happening. I'll be working on it for the next three years -- it's going to consume a lot of my time and work now."
Howard Shore provided the score for The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring, The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord Of The Rings: The Return of The King. Shore won Oscars for his Best Original Score for both The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring and The Lord Of The Rings: The Return of The King, picking up an additional Oscar for Best Original Song in The Lord Of The Rings: The Return of The King.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey comes to theaters December 14th, 2012 and stars Cate Blanchett, Saoirse Ronan, Orlando Bloom, Elijah Wood, Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Ian McKellen, Christopher Lee. The film is directed by Peter Jackson.

@diagma unfortunately I have not yet bridged the gap into the type of movies hisaishi does. but i have heard some of his stuff its very good. Mancini's good too, but he's not quite my generation so i left him out.

Cant believe you guys forgot master Basil Poledouris. Lonesome Dove(Emmy),Conan,Farewell to the King,Flash and Blood are enough to kick half of those on your lists out.

I completely forgot to mention Joe Hisaishi. Every score he does is incredible!

The Narrator: The Better Man
@Dave, Bates is still an up and coming composer, more new school than old. He has interesting techniques, and I loved his 300 and Watchmen scores. I give him the benefit of the doubt.
@Diaigma, I totally forgot him. He did great in Collateral, and Begins/TDK with Hans. Surprised I missed him. consider him added to the list. :P

I'd say he's near the bottom of my top ten as well. Love Giacchino. Can't decide if Williams or Mancini is my top favorite, though.

I should have specified, @Worth5Bucks - your and @Narrator's list was on a last name basis.
I meant James Newton Howard

Red Camera Man
Yes! "The Hobbit" wouldn't be the same without Howard Shore's incredible score! :-)

@diagma not completely. LOTR is my second favorite score of all time. It's just that all the other guys in front of him have written so much more good stuff. Howard shore just hasn't done much and he only rarely shows up.
@dave well not exactly he didn't get one for two towers. He just got two for return of the king. What i find more interesting is that he is the only oscar winning score writer that has a perfect nominations to wins ratio.

I wouldn't have anyone else do the music for this. Excellent to see him return!
@Worth5Bucks and @The Narrator - completely shafted Howard :P

The Narrator: The Better Man
Hmm... I'd say:
1. Zimmer
2. Shore
3. Giacchino
4. Newman
5. Elfman
6. Horner
7. Bates
8. Mansell
That's all I can really recall.

F*ck yes.
I wondered back when G. Del Toro was directing if they were going to go with Shore or Navarette to score it, but since Del Toro backed out, this was pretty much a given. Glad to see it's official, because his orchestrations are such a key part of bringing Middle Earth to life.

1. Zimmer (most enjoyable)
2. Williams (best at it, plus he did my favorite ET!)
3. Giacchino (The future best score writer, ive been tracking this guy ever since the pilot of LOST)
4. Morricone (Just great)
5. Shore (Tempted to put him higher but all he's really done is LOTR, and now the Hobbit!)
6. Horner (I feel bad for the guy, always second best :( )
7. Newman (The underdog of the score writers)
8. Elfman (His music is always so curious)
9. Vangelis (Very electronic, very fun)
10. Mansell (This guy is just epic, and most times is the best thing about the movie he does it for)
Honorable mentions Silvestri, Shifrin, Barry, Rota, and Jablonsky
