According to The Hollywood Reporter, Buena Vista Home Entertainment's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy thumbed its way to the top of the preliminary national DVD sales chart for the week ending Sept. 18, while 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment's Fever Pitch fastballed its way to become the top renter its first week in stores.

Fever Pitch, released on DVD in two versions -- one with extended footage from the Boston Red Sox's World Series win -- also was the week's No. 2 seller on VideoScan's First Alert chart for the week.

Lions Gate's Crash, last week's top seller, fell to No. 3, while Warner's Smallville: The Complete Fourth Season debuted at No. 4, the latest in a series of strong showings for "complete season" boxed sets of popular TV shows.
