Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Henry Cavill has won the coveted role of Superman, the iconic superhero in director Zack Snyder's upcoming reboot.

Henry Cavill is most famously know for his role as Chrales Brandon in Showtime's The Tudors.

Director Zack Snyder stated:

"In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen. I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield."

Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.

Cavill recently wrapped production on The Cold Light of Day and stars in the upcoming Immortals, opening this fall.

Targeted for release in December 2012, the new Superman movie will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Man of Steel was released June 14th, 2013 and stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Diane Lane, Russell Crowe, Antje Traue, Harry Lennix, Richard Schiff. The film is directed by Zack Snyder.

    @ The Real Lex Luthor
Why? Just because he is from the UK. Look at Christian Bale. Dont we all believe in equality? why cant we have a black superman or batman or Brown Superman or Batman. Why does it have to be designated white? tell me this yall.

  7. the Narrator

@Supes, oh I agree. Lol. Definitely somewhat paranoid. The guy was overzealous, but all that aside I can see his point for wanting an American in the role. I had the same argument with Captain America in fact, and I'm glad an American got it.

I'm just saying it's slightly ridiculous for Dave and PJ, users who have been here a while, to be going back and forth, patting each other on the back for attacking a guy who probably won't ever respond to their comments. It seems... pointless? Lol. I don't want to see MW friends wasting their time is all. ;)

I just thought it was silly to say Hollywood thinks American men aren't "tough enough" lol. I'm sure that had nothing to do with their casting decision whatsoever.

While @Z_Money did seem a bit harsh and straightforward, you guys don' need to have an argument with someone who won't respond. While @ejks comment is intelligent, and one that I agree with, I can at least understand where Z is coming from. A little over-zealous, but I get his point, and personally I would have proffered an American. I'm fine with Cavill, but I think you guys are going a little too far. Especially you @Pj.

also on another note... ITS F*CKING SUPERMAN!!! they're not just going to give the role away to someone unless they're absolutely, positively sure the guy will be able to play Superman well and give him justice.

@Dave i know right?!?!!?! @Z_Money is an idiot for thinking that. i really hope he see's all this stuff. American or not, who gives a sh*t? look at Matt Damon.. he played a South African rugby player. Matt Damon isnt South African but he got an oscar nomination last year for it

  13. Daveactor7

@Pjwolsker exactly and also you have to make sure everything fits well with that actor. Henry Cavill is unknown and he can act very well and since he is unknown he will be easy on the budget.
Look at the Avengers right now. Not that I'm against it, but it has pretty big name actors and that is cutting a lot on the budget already.
Fresh names are always a good thing, not a bad thing.

  14. Pjwolsker

Theyre actors.. theyre also not real superheroes. theyre not going to pick some big shot like matt damon or jake gyllenhall to play some superhero. theyre going to pick someone thats fresh and not well known.. chances are itll be someone whos not from America

  15. Daveactor7

Seriously it doesnt matter where the f*ck the actor is from. If they can pull off the role then they do it. Andrew Garfield wowed me in "Social Network" his accent was flawless. I'm sure he'll do great as Spider man.
@Z_Money seriously you're judging Bale for his work in Batman? Look at all of his other roles-hell he has been working his ass off since he was a kid in "Empire of the sun". He is such a devoted actor.

"For those of you cheering this guy. Think again. What Hollywood and WB is doing is saying that American actors and men are no longer tough and strong enough to do the job."

    That was pretty insecure lol.

  17. Pjwolsker

hey @Z_Money i can already tell your kind of a douche especially since you think he's a bad actor. have you not seen American Psycho or The Machinist? he's probably going to win an Oscar for his role in The Fighter. as what @Ejk1 said you dont have a personal stake in this!! so why are you freaking out? Andrew Garfield is playing Spiderman and he's british. Chris Hemsworth is Thor and he's australian, we already know about christian bale, and the guy playing the new superman is an amazing actor!!! ive seen a couple Tudors episodes already and im convinced he can do the job. your just an ignorant little prick who acting like someone just finger banged his cat. you need to chill the f*ck out. alot of foreign actors are talented as f*ck and they can pull off all kinds of accents including American

Okay, I guess Snyder's film won't be getting Z_Money's money. Listen up though dude, if Cavill comes through with a mid-western accent, or no accent at all, then you don't really have a gripe. He's an actor. Superman's a character. He's playing a part.

NEWSFLASH TO EVERYONE UPSET ABOUT THIS CASTING: SUPERMAN IS NOT REAL; HE'S FICTITIOUS. PLEASE STOP ACTING LIKE YOU HAVE A PERSONAL STAKE IN THIS--YOU DON'T.

While I can accept Welling or Routh as not donning the mantle of Superman and/or carrying the torch on, what I can not accept is a Brit taking on the ICONIC AMERICAN role of Superman. Contrary to those who have spoken, SUPERMAN IS AMERICAN!!! Clark Kent is AMERICAN! Kal-el is an alien or Kryptonian. THERE IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE!!! Clark Kent who became Superman did so with American values, American leadership, American mentorship, and American parents!!! Kal-el of Krypton arrived in the heartland of America, not off the Cliffs of Dover, or the English Channel, or the country side of Stonehenge.

Why are they giving this AMERICAN role to a Brit? It was bad enough when they gave Batman to Bale (and his Rhaspy voice), but now they are way out of control with Spiderman and now Superman. And please don't defend Bale, his acting is just as transparent as Welling's for those of you b**ch!!! Christian Bale played Christian Bale in Terminator and Batman Begins/TDK. The new Batman series is a result of good and original story telling and scripts, not Bale.

For those of you cheering this guy. Think again. What Hollywood and WB is doing is saying that American actors and men are no longer tough and strong enough to do the job. They are insulting the character of Superman, his legacy (Truth, Justice, and the AMERICAN way!!!), and you as an American.

    Wake the F**K up!!!!!!!!

It's no longer worth debating Routh and Welling. I bet they don't care half as much as those that are bitching about them not getting the role.

10 seasons of Welling isn't enough? That's an awful lot of show and time for one guy to be Supes.

@arthur, how do you know that you'd rather have the sequel for Returns (because of some script you read), if you haven't even heard of the direction of this film.... eh?

this is just stupid if it wasn't going to be tom welling it should of been brandon routh again. no matter wat tom welling will always be the real superman/clark kent and he hasn't put the suit on yet. and fyi i seen what the script to the superman returns sequel was going to be like and i'd rather have that.
