It seems a recently-released video game has sparked a bidding war and two former New Line Cinema executives could be closing in on the film rights. Deadline New York is reporting that the rights to the popular game Heavy Rain could be won by Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne's Unique Features company.

The Playstation 3 game has already sold over 1 million units since first going on the shelves in February and it was said that Shaye and Lynne, both former New Line Cinema executives who left to form Unique Features, currently have to top bid for the film rights to the video game. It was said that the game was similar in tone to the David Fincher film Se7en, which was one of the films that Shaye and Lynne oversaw while at New Line. Here's a description of the video game by the publisher, Quantum Dreams.

Spanning four days of mystery and suspense, the hunt is on for a murderer known only as the Origami Killer - named after his macabre calling card of leaving behind folded paper shapes at crime scenes. Four characters, each following their own leads and with their own motives, must take part in a desperate attempt to prevent the killer from claiming a new victim.

Key Features

This could really work. It could work if the studio doesn't start trying to cut corners and work this film down to a cruddy movie, as studios do when adapting video games. I'm glad that Prince of Persia was treated like anyother big budget movie, even if it sucks it wasn't scamed out of potential so much as treated like anyother Jerry Bruckhiemer flick, which could level the playing field for furture video game movies.
