Hatfields and McCoys

The Hatfield-McCoy saga begins with "Devil" Anse Hatfield and Randall McCoy. Close friends and comrades during the Civil War, they returned to their neighboring homes - Hatfield in West Virginia, McCoy just across the Tug River border in Kentucky - to increasing tensions, misunderstandings and resentments that soon exploded into all-out warfare between the two families. As hostilities grew, friends, neighbors and outside forces joined the fight, bringing the two states to the brink of another Civil War.

Their story also includes: a tempestuous love affair between Hatfield's son and McCoy's daughter, which had disastrous consequences; the execution of McCoy's three young sons in retaliation for the Rasputin-like murder of Hatfield's beloved brother; a New Year's Massacre of the McCoy clan and burning of their home, which also sparked international headlines; a public clash between state governors; and ultimately the involvement of the United States Supreme Court.

I need to correct an error-Johnse Hatfield had a Daughter (not a son as I had said in prior comment) and she lived a few months-passing away with measles. Ellison was Andersons ("Devils") brother."Devil Anse" fought in the beginning of the war with the miltia. In 1862 he enlisted in the regular army and became the first lieutenant of Company A, a Forty-fifth Virginia Infantry. The following he left, as a Captain to take up the welfare of an indepent in Logan,Pike, Wayne,Cabell, and other border countries. He married Levicy Chafin one week before the war. There is a Biography on DVD Hatfields and McCoy An American Feud and the movie called Matewan.Oh and my Gr-Gm was Biddie Marc*m...who was married to Pearley Hampton-and his Mother was Anna Alzina Hatfield who was married to William Henry Hampton. Censu shows the last name of Westcoal."Devils" Mother was Tabitha Louise Taylor Born April 2-1835,Died onMarch 5th 1894 in Ashland Boyd, Ky..Her parents were Sarah Sally Maynard b. 1-26-1810,d. 12-21-1903 and her Dad was William A. Taylor b.8-11-1806 and d. 11-8-1887,Pike,Ky. I can be reached at janicekinghenry@yahoo.com.

I am Janice Blanton the proud Daughter of Orville,Grand son of Biddie Marc*m of W.V. born 11-14-1877,died 1-8-1969.Her husband was Pearley Hampton born 8-3-1873,d.8-3-1904,his parents were William Henry Hampton b.1842,d.1886 and was married to Anna Alzina Hatfield b.12-7-1855,d.7-2-1937,they were married 9-12-1872. Anna was born to Alta West or Westcole,or Westcoal,b.6-13-1830,d.6-20-1869 and was married to Owen Hatfield on11-12-1846. She was originaly from N.Y. where she was a seamstress.Anderson Hatfield got his nic-name "Devil" from his Mother because as a teen he would wrestle bears and she said to him "you are not afraid of anything-not even the devil himself ".He had 12 children and Randolf McCoy had 13-he was older. The McCoys were later found to have a genetic disposition to pheochrocytomas..thought to lead to rage and be accompanied with elevated blood pressure. There seems to be 3 components to their feuding, the stabbing of Ellison Hatfield -which resulted in his death a few days later-this occured on a whiskey-crazed election day, because Ellison fought for his beliefs in the war...a stabbing by 3 McCoys, a stolen razorback hog, and the intense romantic love betweeb Johnse Hatfiled and Rose Anne McCoy.There was a huge picnic both sides attended tho they were not speaking-and as love at first sight occured..Johnse and Rose Anna ended up in bushes losing track of time- it became dark and a fearful Rose Anna knew she could not go home.A son was born and died from this union...along with the broken heart of Rose Anna. The two never allowed to marry-a five month pregnant Rose Anna rode a horse bareback to warn Johnse that her family was coming to kill him-her quick actions saved his life. When our soldiers landed in Europe their fist question was "tell us about that big feud in America?" This history will hold you like a spell. The families have since had a truce and put the hatred aside.I am grateful that Kevin Costner will play my gr-gr-gr-uncles part...there might be one more great in there-ha! Carpe diem! My Mothers family has the Fairfaxs-the closest friends to George Washington-our first president. They hired George to do his first job of surveying land in Virginia..to creat W.V..George loved their grace and style.
