Hatchet II Pulled from North American AMC Theaters

Adam Green's horror sequel Hatchet II was released in unprecedented fashion this past weekend, hitting theaters unrated through the AMC theater chain. It seems the run will only last one weekend though, as Entertainment Weekly reports that Hatchet II was yanked from all North American theaters by AMC.

We reported back in August that Hatchet II would be the largest unrated theatrical release in 25 years. Adam Green told the site that he learned of AMC's decision to no longer screen the movie on Monday morning:

"We woke up this morning and the movie was gone. I'm bewildered and confused."

AMC released a brief statement to the site, explaining why they pulled Hatchet II:

"At AMC theaters, we review all films in all of our theatres every week and then make our business decisions based on their performance."

Hatchet II earned just over $52,000 in 64 theaters for a miniscule $774 per-screen average, although Adam Green believed the decision to remove the movie had more to do with the controversy surrounding the ultra-violent slasher sequel, which stars Kane Hodder and Danielle Harris:

"I assume it probably had something to do with the controversy online about an unrated movie playing in theaters. To me, the whole thing is unfortunate because this is not a movie that deserves to be unrated. It's a very funny, silly slasher movie about a swamp ghost that's killing people in ridiculous ways. And now it's become, you know, 'Banned from cinemas.' I've lost 11 pounds in the last week from stress."

The director also added that the DVD will likely be on more of a fast-track to get the movie out to fans as quickly as possible:

"The good thing is that the biggest audience for this movie-because it was for the first one-is going to be with on demand and DVD. I know that [Hatchet II distribution company Dark Skies, in light of it being pulled prematurely, is going to do everything they can to get it to the fans as fast as they can. And that's exciting. I don't really make hardcore movies. I'm doing a kids' movie next! Hopefully, this is the last time I'm ever even going to deal with something like this."

Hatchet II was released October 1st, 2010 and stars Danielle Harris, Tony Todd, Kane Hodder, Parry Shen, Tom Holland, R.A. Mihailoff, AJ Bowen, Alexis Peters. The film is directed by Adam Green.

To you it may be bad and I will admit it is not a perfect franchise but you can't t just ignore what the dictatorship called the MPAA did to this movie.

Wait. It was starting to be pulled ON THE DAY IT WAS RELEASED!!!!!!! Which means it was NOT because of money!!!!

@TheDude1 the first paragraph says it all! Christ, can u not see yourself? AMC pulled it out because it wasnt earning enough money. And quit protecting a series that was deemed horrible by many in the first movie

@daveactor7 It means nothing that AMC did it. They were clearly strong armed into doing it. If you can't see that you are blind.

@TheDude1 paranormal activity was far more intriguing then hatchet was. And please read the first paragraph- "pulled from north american theaters by-AMC"

@daveactor7 That is your opinion. There are millions of horror fans that see movies. Look at the most successful movie last year. It was Paranormal Activity. Just because it does not appeal to you means nothing at all. Different people have different interests than others.

And again AMC didn't really pull this out the MPAA did. That is now crystal clear since it started being pulled on the same day it was released.

@TheDude1 hey dude listen people can comment whatever they want to. Its called freedom.
And no offense I just dont see how you make any sense. There are much better independent films coming out too and they look so much more appealing then this movie. I think AMC theatres made a good movie here, saving people their money.

You didn't see ads for it on TV because it was a small independent movie. But there were internet ads on a few websites I came across. Also IT WAS NOT BECAUSE OF MONEY that they removed this movie. It has also been proven that AMC started taking this movie out of its theaters on Friday the day of it's release. It was not because of money it was the evil doing of the MPAA.

hahaha i havnt even seen previews or trailers either, lol. useually if u dont already see ads for it online, u see them like 2 weeks ahead of time on tv, but i saw nada. A movie like this would have made big bucks if it came out for a week heading into oct 31th. like Oct26-31th. on the other hand, i wont b suprise if it came out on dvd/blu ray, that week too.

i can understand why they pulled it, if it wasn't making any money. which is not really a surprise. i didnt even know the movie was out yet. i haven't seen one commercial or one piece of advertising for it. save for the occasional story here on MW. how the hell did they expect it to make money if there was no promotion for it? i haven't even seen the first one so i'm not speaking to weather the movie is good or not, i'm just saying.

@ed-wood Great point. I think we all knew it was not going to last more than two weeks in theaters and with this terrible news we should be getting the DVD this month. Also all this news about Hatchet 2 being pulled will help it with it's DVD sales.

@daveactor7 You know it is that kind of talk that fuels the MPAA. I understand you don't like Adam Green(and to be honest I am not a huge fan either) but at least give it its f*cking run it theaters like it was f*cking promised. The MPAA thinks they know all and movies should only be f*cking shown when there dictatorship says it is okay to show it.

So its ok to pull this kinda movie off for being to unrated but its fine letting stupid movies..show. ? So movies like "Vampires Suck" gets a free pass but hatchet doesn't? lol If the MPAA wants to prove anything, they should atleast do their job right and im sure more than 1 movie would b getting pulled.. i can prob sit here and list all the movies that were in theaters. i have seen that actually do suck. and those didnt get removed. I mean if i was 1 of them, and i saw transformers 2, i would say NO. THAT MOVIE WAS STUPID, RE-WRITE THE PLOT OR ITS GOING BYE-ByE. lol rather than let em in just to make a few bucks by riping us off.

This is without a doubt the doing of the MPAA. Adam Green has been bashing the MPAA in interviews over the past few weeks and now this happens. The MPAA are a bunch of sick and twisted people. The rating system is a joke and so is what AMC did to this movie.

Are u kidding? no such thing as unrated, in today's world, just about everybody watches gore, blood, guts and porn-like films, Hell I own over 300 dvd/blu ray movies, mostly horror/thriller among other gens. and i love those director's cut films, uncut or unrated. . Thats kinda stupid that it was pulled of theaters. If they are concerned with to much nudity, gore, blood, or badwords, well DUH this is an Rrated/unrated film, its not like lil kids are gonna see it, and even if they do, its up to the parent's to know wat they r about to see. not the director's fault. I plan on getting this on blu ray whenever it comes out. weither people liked it or not. its a horror classic.

Oh this is gonna sale like hot cakes. For all the fans who were dying to see it and couldn't because there weren't any AMC's nearby, or were simply to busy. As well as the new fans who don't know it, because word will spread to those who knew nothing about and will become curious as to to whether or not it was "too intense." Maybe I've become numb to movies like this, but it wasn't anywhere near as gratuitous as the first one. I could see how one scene in particular could have caused controversial problem. I am now uber damn glad that I caught this on the opening night. Now it makes that moment extra-special, and that's the kind of thing that it will become to everyone.
