It seems that the latest Hogwarts adventure is off to a record-breaking start. According to Variety, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince took in an estimated $22.2 million from midnight screenings. The mark would be more than enough to break The Dark Knight's $18 million midnight screening record set last summer as well as Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith's $17 million midnight tally.
While the Potter films have always been box-office juggernauts, analysts believe that Potter is more popular than ever lately, which some attribute to J.K. Rowling's last book in the series coming out, and some attribute to the two-year gap between films. The last film, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which also opened on a mid-July Wednesday, took in $12 million from midnight shows en route to a $139.7 million five-day gross.
It seems that more record-breaking numbers could be in store for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, so be sure to check back for the latest updates.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was released July 15th, 2009 and stars Daniel Radcliffe, Michael Gambon, Dave Legeno, Elarica Gallacher, Jim Broadbent, Geraldine Somerville, Bonnie Wright, Julie Walters. The film is directed by David Yates.

The Narrator: The Better Man
Thanks for understanding those of you who did. I just watched it and it was far better than I thought. I admit. :)
@Comrade, I am not bitching... okay maybe I am a little. And I am not saying gross matters all that much. But it does have a slight say. When there are far more HP fans that LOTR... agh, don't get me started. It was a good flick, and I honestly wait for the half blood prince, but to be honest this film did spare the franchise for me. From what I heard from hard core fans that are my friends, I didn't miss anything in Order of Pheonix and they hated Goblet of Fire when I actually enjoyed that one. Either way, at the end of the day, I agree to disagree.
And Chad, Well spoken my man. ;)

Yeah my sister told me they cut out a whole cool fight scene with Dumbledore etc that was in the book. I'm glad I don't read the books otherwise I'd be disapointed lol.

Yes , for me it was too "mushy" , I agree with you about that HP6 is a crucial characgter bulding segment, but dude , after the final fight that they showed us in HP5 I was expecting something bigger and better , the book was more exciting. For me to much was missing in this movie, let's hope HP7 part 1 don't cut the acction of the book like this did.

Technically, the final tally of the current film has yet to be deduced. Include the current film's total gross with the final two installment and you have your three. I think that's what GnR is getting at.
kentarus24:
Nice avatar, but how was HP 6 boring? I'm actually glad the action was toned down in this one. HP 6 is a crucial character building segment of the entire franchise. Preluding to Hermine and Ron, Harry and Ginny's relationships is far more important than a fight scene gone missing. I guess the movie was too "mushy" for you?

This move was so boring , What happened with all the fights that were describe at the end of the book , the director really read the book???

Thanks Juice.
Btw GnR what are you talking about? It has two more, Deathly Hallows is going to be 2 movies, and that's it, the franchise is over. Where did you get the 3rd film from? Typo?

@ The Fallen:
All 5 movies of the potter franchise grossed about $4.5 billion worlwide, and all three LOTR movies grossed about $2.9 billion worldwide.....so u can easily see which franchise made more money.....and potter has three more movies to go, and with the start of Half-blood prince, u can easily understand how much more the potter franchise will make.

Wait, let me catch up, sweeneyfan is talking sh*t to Lock Stock because of his age and went with a homosexual insult? Hmm lol. Well, I will defend LockStock because well, Iron Man was good and got all good reviews (it's not like we are making that up). So why sweeneyfan hates you is beyond me lol. And why are you yelling at Fallen, Comrade? He was just proving a point. Most movies that make a lot of money are good. There are what like 3 that were a disapointment to fans? Transformers 2, Spiderman 3, and X-Men 3 (even though I liked X-Men 3). Back to LockStock's argument, I did see kids at the midnight showing and I was kinda pissed because of parenting these days, they should be in bed not up at 3 am. Bad parenting.
I actually have respect for Harry Potter for what it is, it's pretty interesting, even if it was aimed at the teenage audience. But they keep getting darker, more adult, which I like and is probably the biggest reason I went to this showing. I haven't gone to any other Harry Potter films at midnight because I never really cared that much for HP. There's a huge difference between these films and Twilight.
Btw, no more about Iron Man we all know it was good so there's no need to defend it after this against maybe what 2 people who didn't like it lol?
I agree with Fallen about the whole LoTRs thing, far better storyline than HP and it really pulls you in when you watch it. I'm assuming HP has the same effect on some people because it's not like it has a bad story. It has a lot of interesting mysterious characters for example Snape (who's my favorite). Not to mention Harry Potter has a very strong fanbase which is awesome for HP, not many movies can do this many sequels and get away with it (even though they are based on each book). I can't knock it because it's famous for a reason. I would rather much hear people talk about HP than Twilight any day lol.
Also think about other book adaptations that flopped like The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons. There was this huge fuss about those when they were released and then people saw it they were disappointed. I thought the secret itself from "Code" was silly. I was like 'this is the big catholic secret they are going with?' Whoop-dee-doo lol. So you see, HP stands above a lot of franchises because of it's fans, and I'm assuming there is more of those than LoTR fans (even though those films are made into the best trilogy ever). Think about all those people who haven't watched HP yet because last night was sold out like crazy? This movie is gonna make money money money... mon-ey lol

YES, I knew it. this will deff. go even higher than t2. lets hope that is. the competition is really on its feet. and now, HP is winning. after 16 mill for t2 in midnight show and 22 mill for HP6. I think we have a winner.

well for the fallen, I agree but people have the choices to pick what's there best. LOTR was a great hit in fact it was one of the truly best.
but to put both series together, for me, HP wins.

The Narrator: The Better Man
True I have no doubt about that, but the take an 3 movies of HP and pit it against the LOTR trilogy and it gets owned in both reviews, box office, and fandom. :)
The reason I compare them so addimatly (don't know if I spelled that right) is because they both are English based, blockbuster movies, under the adventure fantasy title. And I'm just proving that it is not the best thin to hit the screen, given it is fun.

LOL. That was funny, Lock.
No offense intended to anyone, but that's exactly the way I feel about eating McDonalds food PERIOD, no matter what age you are.

People can make comparisons to the Harry Potter films all day and all night. Throw out box office records, toss in critical acclaim; either way, there will be those who hate it, and those who like it.
I'm with the latter, and will hopefully pop in sometime this weekend.

Yes, 30 to 50 year olds that were die hard fans, that's why they go on opening night (because they are fans). Yes, i'm not saying that no older people go to see the films, just a few do. Otherwise a lot of older people would just prefer to be in a bar drinking beer with friends, trust me i know what i am talking about. I don't have kids, but one thing is for sure they aren't going to watch, keep telling yourself that the gross comes from adult audiences aswell, but actually comes from kids, don't forget the happy meals from burger king and sh*t that get people to watch especially kids. Now if you are a grown up person who loves happy meals you have to be a retard.

I am with The Kwisatz. I mean the I read some of the books and was not too impressed. Granted it IS FAR better than that Twilight crap, and is from time to time entertaining and fun. But let's face it, it is nothing mind blowingly special and is over hyped b a lot of teenagers, who like popular reads.
Also, this made a billion in 5 movies. LOTR made over 2 billion in 3 movies. That says something about audiences. :)

I assume you do not have any kids Lock and Stock because I do and they do not force me to do anything. I am going to see it with my daughter on Sunday not because she is forcing me to but because I want to. I am sure I will enjoy it as much as I have all the others. I have never read the books but I have several friends (all over 30) that have read every one and loved them. The reason Harry Potter does so well is because it appeals to a very wide age range. When I went to see Order of the Phoenix I sat by a couple in their 50's who loved the books as well as the films. I also agree that it is not for very young children, too much imagery that would cause nightmares.

Hey Lock and Stock, you are so far off it is not even funny. I went to the midnight premiere and I saw alot of adults without children. I myself am 38. The Harry Potter films appeal to a wide audience and THAT is why they make so much money. Thank you that is all
