Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows - Part 2 Breaks Opening Day Record with $92.1 Million

The Deathly Hallows smashes box office records
It's confirmed. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 is a box office record destroying machine. The finale movie in this magical series, which finds Harry defeating Voldemort in an epic duel, took in a massive $92.1 million during its first Friday of release. That is the biggest single day gross of all-time.

Overseas, the film pulled in an additional $75 million, for a three-day-international total of $157.5 million. That makes Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2's global total a mammoth, worldwide record breaking $249.6 million. Yeah, we'll be seeing a sequel or remake of some sort. That's inevitable with those kinds of numbers.

As of this moment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 is set to break the planet-wide record of $394 million set by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in 2009. Here in the states, it is also expected to bust open the $158.4 million weekend record set by the beloved The Dark Knight in 2008.

As of now, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 is expected to pull in North of $175 million domestically by the time the smoke clears from the ruble of Hogwarts come Monday morning. Helping push those huge numbers home is the fact that this sequel is in a record number of theaters, playing on a record number of screens, and it also has the added financial bump up provided by 3D.

We'll have the final weekend box office total for you sometime tomorrow.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 was released July 15th, 2011 and stars Ralph Fiennes, Michael Gambon, Alan Rickman, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Evanna Lynch, Domhnall Gleeson. The film is directed by David Yates.

The Dark Knight was released July 18th, 2008 and stars Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, Michael Caine, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Monique Gabriela Curnen. The film is directed by Christopher Nolan.

I seriously don't give a sh*t about these weekend totals "records." They're so damn skewed it's not even funny. Of course HP should beat TDK--Ticket prices have climbed since 2008. I saved money because I went to the 10 am showing of HP, but if I went at the same time I saw TDK (around 3 pm) I would have paid two dollars more for the HP ticket than the TDK ticket. And of course, matinee savings have also been crippled. Matinee now ends at noon; movie theaters used to stay at matinee until mid-afternoon. I remember in the eighties and nineties when I could see films for matinee prices until 5 or 6 pm. Theaters have done everything they can to make more and more money off of the audience. In 1997, tickets to Titanic averaged $4.97. In 1939, tickets to Gone With the Wind was what, 5 cents? So yeah, I don't give a f*ck about inflated records. It's no different than home run records by steroid users.

Just a thought, but you might consider editing out the massive spoiler right at the top of the article which states who wins the final battle of a series that people have been watching over a period of ten years and eight films and quite possibly had not yet read the last book, expecting that the cap on spoilers might possibly be longer than just 12 hours of a movie's release. After avoiding spoilers like this for several years now, I am thankful that I saw it at midnight... before the 12 hours spoiler cap was up.

Avatar......What's Avatar? Go HP Go....What a brilliant movie best one I've seen ever and I'm not talking about JUST Harry Potter movies. I had tears in my eyes at several parts.

Just saw the movie this morning...It is definetly the best of all 8 movies. I could see prequels to this series based on his parents and all the other characters Harry met in each movie prior to this.

@rojodiablo The only thing TDKR really needs is some more IMAX screens. I believe TDK only had about 75. If TDKR can have about 300 to 350 it may get close to 190 or so.

Until the next Batman flick comes out and it tries to demolish these numbers itself, though without the 3D numbers helping it, it won't be easy!

    Damn...

Anyways, I don't know ya'll. TDKR has a lot of hype to build for most of the common crowd, and while it'll make a sh*t ton of dough come opening day, I doubt even it's soon-to-be legendary viral marketing schemes can boost it's mainstream anticipation enough to topple these numbers.

  18. TheDude1

@insertusernamehere Without the 3D it would not break TDK's record. I read somewhere that of the 43.5 million midnight showings it was 25 million for 3D.

That's absolutely incredible! However, since I'm not psychic, can Captain A. dethrone HP next week? At this rate I would expect it to beat TDK's record, but there's usually a 40 -60% drop in the second week right?
