The Deathly Hallows scares up $61.2 million on opening day
This seventh film in the Harry Potter franchise surpassed the opening day grosses of its previous installment Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which only pulled in $58.2 million back in the summer of 2009. But it couldn't quite catch up with the last two installments of The Twilight Saga, with New Moon earning $68.5 million in 2009, and Eclipse breaking the record for the best opening weekend ever with $72.7 million. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 also fell short of The Dark Knight's 2008 opening day grosses of $67.2 million, and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen's 2009 opening day grosses of $62 million.
$24 million of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 ticket sales came from Thursday's midnight screenings, where it played on a record 3,700 screens. If you are waiting to hear if Harry Potter broke any box office records with his first day debut, yes, he did. The latest sequel in this franchise earned a record breaking $5.1 million dollars from IMAX ticket sales, playing on 239 IMAX screens.
Industry insiders speculate that the movie will make more than $150 million through Sunday, playing on a record number of 4,124 screens. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 is expected to make more than $400 million at the domestic box office before it ends its theatrical run.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 was released November 19th, 2010 and stars Bill Nighy, Emma Watson, Richard Griffiths, Harry Melling, Daniel Radcliffe, Julie Walters, Bonnie Wright, Rupert Grint. The film is directed by David Yates.

Potter series are great. No comparison to Twilight. If you're a fan of Harry Potter then there isn't any need to compare. I thought Deathly Hallows was very good, excellent and well-done.

The special effects were rubbish, and I hate R Patts, whose face is just as wooden as his acting! Twilight has nothing on the Harry Potter series, in fact Deathly Hallows is better than the whole Twilight sereis put together.

deathly hallows avada kedavra-ed those films that are below the list congratulations
however I was disappointed that harry potter didn't beat twilight
I guess teens are not very interested in HP anymore they like vampires/werewolves love because its more mature and according to most teens, HP is nerdy like Star Wars & Star Trek
HP is a legend, a series champion, an avada kedavra to the ass, but because teens wants something new that's what they only give to HP7.1 a $61m loads of cash.
It should be #2 or #1 at the highest-grossing openers!

Seen it and was frustrated they could of made it one whole movie i wanted to see it to the end they could have ended at a different spot, with the slow spots in it of them running for their lives the rest of it kept my attention even my two boys 5 and 11 liked it but i think noone would have complained for one long movie hell look at dances with wolves i worked at a theatre when that came out and you know what i never saw anybody leave before the movie finished, it just goes to show you "well written story+good actors= good movie" plain and simple...even a intermission i think would have worked...Dammit i just want to see the rest of the movie :)...

The hilarious thing is that Alexandre Desplat (the composer) composed New moon and Deathly hallows part 1, but the movie deserved his epic works lol. Twilight got pwned so bad there

@Lux Yeah, man. Although I think it's safe to say that HP appeals beyond the teen crowd. I know tons of adults like myself that get just as giddy over them as any kid :)

@Supes You nailed it on the head. Harry Potter holds up because of its enduring story and widespread appeal. Twilight is merely a concept that started a fad amongst a minority group. What really frustrates me is when people try to compare them, when Twilight isn't even in the same league with Potter. They may both have a teen fan base, but quality wise, there's no contest.

Just got back from this. Narrowly (and I mean narrowly) beats "Prizoner of Azkaban" as the best in the series...so far.
And, yeah. This flick is going to make boatloads.

nah i'm just kidding anyway. I fully support Meyer's right to wright.
Its just unfortunate that Bella is a "role model" for so many young girls.
If you have a few minutes read this, its hillarious: http://www.cracked.com/funny-36-twilight/

I really don't care that much whether it beats Twilight with records. It'll do well with repeat business, something Twilight can't do because once all the 13 year old girls see it, they immediately begin obsessing about the next one. Not because of their quality, which is a joke, but because its trendy.
Besides, Harry Potter will be remembered for decades. Twilight will be lucky to be mentioned in 5 years.

Just kidding, btw, @Skywise - however I don't think writing bad books is cause for "obliviate," . . . maybe "Petrificus Totalis?" That way she could never move to write again :P

I really REALLY wanted this to beat twilight. The only reason twilight has the advantage is because it has such a HUGE female following (obviously). Women from tweens all the way to old ladies....and do you know what they have? boyfriends, fiances and husbaneds. You know that your GF/F/W has dragged you to see one of her rom-coms beacuse you just forced, i dont know, the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy upon her in one sitting....
....
.....
i dont know where i'm going with this.

Very nice. Maybe that will make all the difference :P - I don't have time to see it, but I'm quite tempted to donate for the cause, or buy the ticket in advance. If I buy it for next week, will that count for this weekend's gross? :P
