Harrison Ford Not in Talks for Blade Runner Follow-Up

Harrison Ford is not in talks to star in the Untitled Blade Runner Project
Over the weekend, a report surfaced that actor Harrison Ford was in talks to return as Rick Deckard in the Untitled Blade Runner Project. It seems that is not the case, though, according to producer Andrew A. Kosove, who shot down the report earlier today. Here's what he had to say below.

"It is absolutely patently false that there has been any discussion about Harrison Ford being in Blade Runner. To be clear, what we are trying to do with Ridley (Scott) now is go through the painstaking process of trying to break the back of the story, figure out the direction we're going to take the movie and find a writer to work on it. The casting of the movie could not be further from our minds at this moment."

It still isn't known yet if the Untitled Blade Runner Project will be a prequel or a sequel to the 1982 classic Blade Runner. However, Andrew A. Kosove revealed the story is shaping up much like director Ridley Scott's upcoming sci-fi drama Prometheus.

"It's like asking if we're going to make the sky red or blue, there has been no discussion about it. What Ridley does in Prometheus is a good template for what we're trying to do. He created something that has some association to the original Alien, but lives on its own as a standalone movie."

When asked if there is any possibility that Harrison Ford will be approached to return as Rick Deckard, Andrew A. Kosove didn't entirely rule it out, but believes it is unlikely.

"In advance of knowing what we're going to do, I supposed you could say yes, he could. But I think it is quite unlikely."

Untitled Blade Runner Project comes to theaters in 2014.

@felipe-11 Yeah, I think what Scott is doing with Prometheus is the perfect way to approach that universe, and I would like to see the same treatment here. The thing is, these fictional universes are so big that we don't need remakes/reboots when there are endless potential stories to tell within the same universe that don't necessarily revolve around the same characters.

I'm not against remakes/reboots on principle, but I also don't think they're warranted in some cases. This new Spider-Man movie is a perfect example. Why tell his origin again when they could just set a Spider-Man film in media res, with him already established, and call it an unofficial sequel that doesn't rely on or reference the previous films. Superman Returns did that really well by acting as a sequel to Superman 2, while ignoring that 3 & 4 ever happened, yet it stood on its own as its own story.

The same general principle applies to movies like this, I think. We have a general established set of events and characters that happened or where referenced in Blade Runner. Why make up more of a story than is necessary about Deckard when they have so much more to draw from? Take what is there and use it as a starting point, but don't rely on it or centre the plot around it.

Don't get me wrong, I love Harrison Ford and Blade Runner is my favorite movie ever, but this isn't Indiana Jones. The movie wasn't called "Rick Deckard". In case you can't figure it out by yourselves, Scott himself has said that Deckard was a replicant, so he's already out of the picture in ANY case. He's dead to be in a sequel and not fabricated to be in a prequel. Period.

They can still focus on a thousand things more interesting than Deckard, like the creation of the replicants, the off-world colonies, the foundation of Tyrell Corp., anything...

I don't get why people are so insistant that Ford be in whatever new movie they make. Sigourney Weaver isn't in Prometheus and that movie is still gonna be mind blowingly epic.

@shuabert Thank god at least one person seems to get it! It's like your the only other person here who has seen the movie...

I just don't see why they don't within dialogue create a story for his character and bring in a new one and keep it grounded and based on the other works of the Blade Runner franchise of Phillip K Dick's work

And quite agree with @shuabert that should be his backstory

It wouldn't make much sense for him to return anyway, since the end of the movie strongly implies he's a replicant, and that means he would be dead.
