Halo Heading to DreamWorks?

DreamWorks trying to secure Halo rights
DreamWorks trying to secure Halo rights
After the massive success of the new Halo video game, Halo: Reach, it seems that efforts to get the long-delayed Halo movie off the ground are taking place at DreamWorks, according to Vulture.

DreamWorks is taking a different approach to the property by looking to adapt some of the many novelizations of the Halo franchise. It was said that this would avoid any potential legal hassles with the previous movie that was being developed by both Fox and Universal, since it would come from a "different" source.

We reported just last month that Microsoft was still interested in making a Halo movie, although it seems this tactic of using a novelization doesn't sit well with the software company. Here's an excerpt from the site's piece, from a source close to Microsoft:

"It's a gigantic waste of time, because [Microsoft] doesn't want anything to happen in any other media that could screw up a multi-billion dollar franchise. Somebody has to be in control of a movie; it's a director's medium. But they're completely averse to that. Because if Steven Spielberg f*cks it up, what's your recourse? So the rule is: 'First, do no harm.'"

DreamWorks hasn't hired a writer as of yet, and it isn't clear if the studio will even be able to secure the rights to this project. We'll be sure to keep you posted with any further information on the Halo movie as soon as we have it. In the meantime, you can Click Here! to read the site's entire article, which includes a detailed history on the Halo movie.

@ Todd, for sure, I think we can all expect this movie to be PG-13 unfortunately. I mean their not even going with the main story here Master Chief might only play a small part. Still I think we've all seen and played the main story so much that a different one would be refreshing, specially with Master Chief and some other Spartans in their upbringing and early missions. I hope this is a Trilogy

It would have to be a mixture of Live and CGI. Although I can't see Dreamworks doing this, it doesn't seem their style.
This would have to be rated R, but the studios now would bring it down to PG-13 or 14.
Fox would be the right choice, but then again all of the studios would dumb it down no matter what.

Damn it not Dream Works.. I was hoping Legendary films picks this up or Universal again. Whoever gets picked to direct has A LOT of pressure on them, which is good

to make a good Halo movie they would need at least a $200 million budget. but $300 million would be more like it

I said a month before Halo Reach came out, that when it made a ton of money, the studios would suddenly want to make a movie. This is laughable. I want a Halo movie so bad, but I know that the studios won't be willing to give it a good budget, and it will either get shelved again or be crap.

    The books indeed were awesome.

Also, The Fall of Reach doesn't follow Noble 6 whatsoever, there seems to be some confusion with that. The Reach game is absolutely NOTHING like the book. The majority of The Fall of Reach is solely about Master Chief being raised as a Spartan until he finally makes it to Halo--where the book ends and sets up for the second book, The Flood.

On the other hand, I don't find Spielberg to be a good choice at all. That, and because they keep delaying the film, public interest is going to wane. They're holding off way too damn long on this. Someone needs to pull the f*cking trigger and either say "yay" or "nay" before it's too late. Fox and Universal f*cked themselves royally by not investing in District 9 when they had the chance (the bi-product of Blomkamp since he couldn't do the Halo film).

I definitely found The Fall of Reach to be the best, but First Strike wasn't bad and Ghosts of Onyx had an excellent storyline.

my vote is in... not going to happen, and when it does, most will have forgotten about the franchise that it slumps at the box office.

I so agree with The Narrator.. the books were great, the second was the best (master chief was described as god like as he rose out of the cryo-tube).. the last 3 were just ok.. the master chief wasn't in them. But Linda's cool though! Oh yea Cortana... she was great with the master chief.

  20. The Narrator: The Better Man

P.S. The books are awesome. Definitely worth reading/adapting. But the budget required to do half the things in any of the books would be astronomical. So yea, it's safe to say they are gonna stick with the game adaption. The audience will follow it a lot easier, which is sad..
