Hairspray Hits $100 Million Mark!
The film, directed by Adam Shankman, is the 10th musical in film history to reach this touchstone. The list of financially capable movies includes The Sound of Music and Grease, as well as such animated musicals as The Lion King and Aladdin.
Analysts suspect that tween girls are the reason the film is so popular. But the film also appealed to a much wider demographic than most of the recent musicals that have come our way. New Line president of distribution David Tuckerman stated, "We knew from before the picture was even released how much fun it was. But we also knew the challenge was to get males to come too, which they did. The movie just delivered."
New Line is hosting musical sing-alongs in 100 theaters across the country. At least $2 million has been made from this single venture alone.
Hairspray was released July 20th, 2007 and stars John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Amanda Bynes, James Marsden, Queen Latifah, Brittany Snow, Zac Efron. The film is directed by Adam Shankman.
