Actress Hailee Steinfeld is in talks to star in Romeo and Juliet for Italian director Carlo Carlei. Lily Collins was previously attached to the role, though she recently landed the coveted Snow White role for director Tarsem Singh.

This indie version of Romeo and Juliet will be Hailee Steinfeld's next movie, since production starts sometime later this spring. She is also attached to the young-adult adaptation Forgotten and an indie version of Sleeping Beauty. Both projects aren't nearly as far ahead as Romeo and Juliet, though.

Oscar-winning screenwriter Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park) is writing the screenplay for Carlo Carlei to direct. Ileen Maisel, Mark Ordesky, and The Pursuit of Happyness director Gabriele Muccino will produce.

Romeo and Juliet will be budgeted at $15 million. It isn't clear if the filmmakers are putting a new spin on the classic love story or not.

Romeo and Juliet comes to theaters in 2012 and stars Hailee Steinfeld, Douglas Booth, Holly Hunter, Ed Westwick, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Paul Giamatti. The film is directed by Carlo Carlei.

@dan1 absolutly agreed. She was brilliant in True Grit and really there is nothing i can say about that film that hasnt been said already. I know R & J is one of those stories that is going to be remade.....forever but that is one film that has not only been done to death but its been done to death very VERY well.

She can thank her lucky stars for getting picked for True Grit. Now she's got her Hollywood career. Which is cool, since she's actually a good actress.
