Guillermo Del Toro wants to helm Maleficent
Tim Burton was previously attached to direct the film, but has since dropped out.
"Let me put it this way, if they ask I'll take the meeting," Guillermo del Toro said. "I think Maleficent's dragon is the only design with the wings separate from the front legs, the only time that design has ever worked. And let me tell you how much of a fan I am. I have a collection of over two or three dozen Maleficent figures, some of them four or five feet tall. I own about 10 pieces of conceptual art from Sleeping Beauty that include the dragon and a lot more pieces that are just from Sleeping Beauty. It's one of my three favorite Disney films. I would love to. But I don't want to put too many hopes on it. They're probably on a fast track and I cannot take any more projects on a fast track."
No production date has been set.
Maleficent comes to theaters March 14th, 2014 and stars Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning, Sharlto Copley, Imelda Staunton, Miranda Richardson, Kenneth Cranham, Sam Riley, Lesley Manville.

It would be great to see Gullermo take on this film, but it definitely sounds like it will NOT happen.

@themoviefanatic I see Del Toro making more fantasy movies than anything else.

dark and gloomy.

@themoviefanatic I disagree, simply because Maleficent is an evil person. If (most likely) she will be the main character (why else would her name be the title!) who would be better to make a dark a gloomy movie revealing this character as it truly is?

I like his style as well in his movies to, but for this movie i think Guillermo Del Toro is a better choice.

Yes, i couldn't agree with you more, about what you said about him being the king of dark fantasy.

@themoviefanatic Agreed. If GDT signs on to this, my interest will go way up from what it was when Burton was attached. Del Toro is pretty much the king of dark fantasy.

I'd like to see him direct more original concepts, but he would be a GREAT fit for this.

@dan1 -- I gotta agree with that, on-the-other-hand, I remember when Tim Burton dropped out and I suggested that Del Toro direct it, looks like I was right on the money.
