Guillermo Del Toro Speaks About The Hobbit

Total Film recently spoke with filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro about his highly anticipated film The Hobbit, which he's working on new down in New Zealand with Peter Jackson. The interview is rather extensive, but here's an excerpt from the interview where he talks about the creatures of the film.

The way I phrased it to Weta, I said we would keep the DNA in the same gene pool as the Rings trilogy, but that we would generate a different type of character. For example, in the trilogy most of the creatures are brutish or inarticulate.

In The Hobbit, the creatures speak: Smaug has beautiful lines of dialogue; the Great Goblin has beautiful lines of dialogue; many creatures do. So we had to design them with a different approach because you are not just designing things that are scary.

I also wanted some of the monsters in The Hobbit to be majestic.

I wanted the Wargs to have a certain beauty so that you don't have a massively clear definition: what is beautiful is good and what is ugly is not. Some of the monsters are absolutely gorgeous.

'' So one of the first things is how do we make the battles or the action in The Hobbit feel different from that?

Because it was fresh when the trilogy came out, to see those enormous valleys or fortresses being invaded by warriors.

But then after the trilogy you had Troy, Narnia, everything. It has become quite common seeing two massive CG armies attacking each other.

So we came up with a good solution, I think. It will make the battles stand out''
    i can wait for this

I like your point Leng T'che. Add his influences, but don't let that take over the project

Yeah I see that now, thanks for clearing it up in the way you guys did, and not being douche bags about it. Either way I'm interested to see what he does, and even though his style is unique, I think his adaptation of it needs to have a good medium point, like add your influences but don't let it take over the project.

The problem is that most people think the hobbit is supposed to be just like lord of the rings when in reality it isn't. Read the hobbit and the lord of the rings. The only way you can see that it's ok to not copy everything PJ did.

yeah he was saying that he is trying to stay away from such a simple definition of pretty = good and ugly = bad. i think u misunderstood him.

and nothing against ur opinion but even if Del Toro doesn't step out of his box, so to speak, i would still be very happy with the movie, i love his style. and the hobbit doesn't have to match perfectly with LOTR cuz they r very different feeling stories.

Leng T'che, Del Torro is saying that he does not want beautiful=good ugly=bad

Its sounds like this is going to look like a typical Del Torro movie and not the Hobbit. Sorry if you don't agree with my opinion, but I see it straying already. Thats one of the things I dreaded when I heard he was directing this. I was hoping he would be able do something outside of himself if that makes any sense. I don't, maybe it comes out looking cool, who's to say, I just hope he creates some sort of variety, and doesn't make every last drop of it 'majestic'. And I'm sorry, but Del Torro saying beautiful is good and ugly is bad, is the dumbest sh*t I ever heard. They should be applied where fit, you can't have all your eggs in one basket and I do believe something can be ugly and still emote intelligence. I don't, correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember there being some written rule about ugly=stupid. Either way lets see.
