Guillermo del Toro will not direct Star Wars: Episode VII
"We got one phone call to my agent saying, 'Is Guillermo interested?' And basically I have so much stuff already of my own, and I'm pursuing stuff that I'm generating already. It was very flattering. It was just a phone call, it didn't go past that, it was very nice to be asked, but believe it or not, I'm busy enough."
When asked who he would like to see direct what will surely be the most anticipated movie of the 21st Century, the filmmaker revealed he wanted Brad Bird to take the helm.
"I think the fans deserve somebody that is just going to immerse themselves completely. As a geek, I would have loved to see Brad Bird take it."
Unfortunately, Brad Bird revealed in November that he is not making Star Wars: Episode VII. Michael Arndt is writing the screenplay, with Disney eyeing a 2015 release.
Star Wars: Episode VII comes to theaters in 2015 and stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, Anthony Daniels. The film is directed by J.J. Abrams.

Anyone who's seen me on this site long enough knows how much I dislike Nolan fanboys

@incmob I don't have a Nolan Boner, I actually hate his work on the Batman series aside from Batman Begins. I was referring to how his style would be perfect for this universe. Note I also mentioned Gore Verbinski is just as viable a candidate in my mind considering how well he meshed action, adventure, comedy and supernatural elements in the Pirates Franchise... along with balancing out a huge cast.

@smokemon i can name a couple of reasons directors are turning it down... number one... disney has the reigns which for most directors means LIMITLESS CONTROL, wheras lucas had too much control... other filmakers will not fair the same. secondly... who wants to be the first to start a franchise that has already burned, and milked the fans in the past 13 years. expectations are high... if the film does not get done right... the director is almost always to blame... just look at movieweb comments if you dont believe me. so it will either explode a career or destroy it depending on the outcome and not many filmakers want to take that risk... i can bet the second and third films get more willing participants after hollywood sees how the first film does.
P.S to the people with nolan boners still... good filmaker... but not for star wars.

The Cryptkeeper: Resurrected
Jesus no one wants this movie... Well I would never have even guessed Del Toro woulda been asked in the first place; Star Wars is not his style. And if he turned Star Wars into his own usual style, that'd be weird.

I'm going to say this here cause I don't think I've brought it up on this site before. But as much as I hated Dark Knight Rises, I feel like Nolan's style of directing would perfectly fit Star Wars.
Think about all his movies.
- He likes serious overarching themes.
- Favors a very clean palette
- Serious characters and a lot of depth.
Something the Star Wars Universe could really shine through.
The only other director I'd really favor for the job is Gore Verbinski
The Pirates Franchise has everything the Original Star Wars franchise had.
- Quirky characters
- Multiple heroic characters
- Action
- Adventure
- Comedy that was not intrusive and didn't destroy the story.
Except I feel like with today's tech and Gore's flair for casting and action adventure, it could be something really amazing.
And he already does a lot of work for Disney

Money is still on Vaughn...he will direct VII and then step away as another director takes VIII and IX...

Give it to Gore 'Pirates of the Caribbean' unless he says no. If no one will then it won't get done. Then go to plan E: Skywalker directs it.

I'd like to see the Del Toro touch on something like Star Wars, but I totally understand why anyone would be hesitant to do something this pre-hyped.
