As a co-writer and director of this film (who works with the design teams, costume teams, creature teams, VFX teams every day of the week), let me be very clear one more time: we are not talking about 3D, we are NOT writing the screenplay for 3D right now- we are hiring my DoP Guillermo Navarro to shoot the film and we are not discussing 3D with him either or with WETA digital or WB or anyone else. That should be a little less sidestepping, I hope. If after Avatar the market may change and demands are put upon us, etc that is in the future. But if such things happen and we start discussing 3D down the line, I'll let it be know here at TORN because that's the proper way of doing things. But make no mistake- I've been living in NZ for almost a year now and we have not been discussing 3D.When we do, I'll make sure your source finds out. Thank You, Guillermo.
The director also went on to dispel certain casting rumors and talked about the 3-D format in general on the site as well.
...is dead-on about the imminent conversion of film into an expanding 3-D field - at least in most blockbusters and I know of, at least, 4 or 5 major filmmakers preparing 3D films right now. Some of them seriously artistic and ungimmicky!! I've seen Avatar and I was absolutely blow away by it!! I myself expect to explore 3D soon enough- it is the future, just not my immediate future. And no- neither David Tennant nor Tom Cruise are Bilbo and we are not redesigning Gollum.
We'll be sure to update you with any and all updates on The Hobbit as soon as we have more information.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey comes to theaters December 14th, 2012 and stars Cate Blanchett, Saoirse Ronan, Orlando Bloom, Elijah Wood, Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Ian McKellen, Christopher Lee. The film is directed by Peter Jackson.

They Live might have bombed when it came out, but that sh*t is a cult classic.

Now you guys are talking my language. I love John Carpenter's music. Even though some would call it thin, it always sets the perfect tone. Carpenter has gotten a lot of flack lately, and I can't figure out why. He made a comment about three years ago, about a movie that he was going to be involved in, and his comment was, "They probably won't let me direct it". I don't get it. I mean, there was that bomb, They Live, that he did, but everybody is entitled to one or two bombs, right? He needs to get directing again, because I'm missing his stuff.
The only movie that I didn't care about, only because of one scene that was in it was so disturbing, it has haunted me to this day, is, "Assault on precinct 13".
The scene I'm talking about, is when the girl from Disney's Escape from Witch Mountain (who was only about 8 or 9 at the time), stops an ice cream truck to get a cone, and asks for vanilla or chocolate, I don't remember which. She walks away, and the killer punk gang shows up and kills the ice cream man.
When the girl realizes that she has the wrong flavor, she goes back to tell the ice cream man. She stands at the drivers side says, "This isn't vanilla/chocolate", and one punk (wearing those horizontally elongated sunglasses) on the passenger side of the truck, turns to her and shoots her in the chest with a silencer, and you see mist of blood spay in the camera and the girl falls back, as we see the side view of her falling with the cone still in her hand.
My sister and I used to watch all of those Witch Mountain movies, and Assault was done about the same time, so it horrified me. We had cable back then and I was watching this movie while my parents weren't around. Even though I'm an adult, just talking about this scene mortifies me, and I can't understand how Carpenter could film such a horrifying scene, killing this young girl. Out of all of the horror movies that I have ever seen, this ranks up as the most horrifying scene ever!

Oh yeah man that music is so chilling. I got into it around the same time the game came out too. Whats funny is my parents would let me watch Alien, and Aliens and they didnt really think twice about it. But when it came to The Thing, they were like 'No f*cking way'. Goes to show how well that movie did at scaring the sh*t out of people.
I think if they do a sequel after the prequel, they should base it on the game, with a rescue squad coming in to find out what went wrong at the american camp.

The Thing is a freaky movie. I saw it around the time the game came out (so I knew what the heck it was about) and yeah, the music in that movie is what HORROR music should sound like.
The only movie I fully enjoyed in 3D was Beowulf, because it was unique (the film animation style- which I have only seen in another film called Final Fantasy but has nothing to do with the game franchise and I don't even know how they got away with using that name).

Yeah, one of the reasons i like The Thing so much is cause of the puppetry, the way they move, its not maimed by the perfect motion tracking CGI, its so f*cking weird, its feels unhuman and thats what the movie is about, so it really adds to it. I think the gloss of CGI kills things, you can tell it was made up in a computer, unlike a prosthetic suit or puppet, when done well, cant be beat, it feels tangible. Also the gravity in CGI is not quite right. When blood shoots out or spurts or what not, it always has this funny look to it. I like to see some real globs of blood or alien goo spurting through the air (as perverted as that sounds).

Cool! I like practical effects. Like I've said before, the best I have ever seen The U.S.S. Enterprise look, was in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn, when the Enterprise and the Reliant were going through that nebula near the end of the movie. The lighting was perfect. They looked very realistic and looked like something you could touch. I think those type of effects benefit the most, when done practically.

It still sucks thats what I say. And i will never watch a 3D movie, I don't care if its made from the blood of god, it doesn't interest me. Sorry if I'm a purist, but enough is enough, it's already bad with all the f*cking CGI garbage that people come out with, now they're going to be pre-occupied with how to make something 3D. By the end there wont be a single shred of story element, just look at G.I.JOE which was heavily CGI concentrated, could you imagine if it was in 3D. They'd be so focused on making it look crazy that all the backstories, as short as they were, would be left in the dark.
When I make movies, I plan to use old time effects, like puppetry and minatures, along with good cinematography and editing. It seems like hollywood tries to make things look so real these days and so massive, that it doesn't leave room for people to use their imaginations.

It Seems everybody respects Mr. Del Toro. Well, he says that 3D is the future. What says all of you naysayers to that?

Could you imagine going to see Whiteout in 4D? It would be mass murder.

I f*cking hate 3D so much. It so f*cking lame, why is it so important that we see sh*t flying in front of our faces. What happened to a good old flick, with strong characters and an involving story plot. I don't want to feel like I'm riding a ride at Universal Studios when i go to the movies, for that I go to ride Muppets 3D and dodge a flying pie. What's next Smell-o-vision? 4D where you feel the weather? F*cking-A.

Agree with Diaigma...some films aint worthy of the 3D status...
And as someone told me a while back that Hobbit was in 3D, and i dispelled it as a rumour.
I'd like this time to take a minute and say these lovely 3 words being 'TOLD YOU SO :)'

Great news about the casting and Gollum, though I wouldn't have minded Tennant too much for Bilbo. No 3D though, please. It will do more harm than good with this story.
