James Gunn wanted as director of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy
So, it seems, Rocket Raccoon may be in capable hands after all. Maybe. James Gunn can sometimes be an acquired taste. But he's good friends with Joss Whedon and the Firefly crew, so this is really great news for someone out there, somewhere.
At the moment, Gunn is Marvel's top choice for this sci-fi adventure, which finds a group of intergalactic outlaws and a U.S. pilot trying to make off with an undisclosed object that the entire universe seems to want. The studio is said to love James Gunn's sensibility, and his keen ability to mix action, horror, and comedy. To get a sense of his superhero side, you might want to seek out 2001's The Specials, which follows the disfunctionality of a Justice League type group of do-gooders.
James Gunn isn't the only name Marvel has sought out, though. If negotiations aren't reached, and a deal isn't signed, the studio is also looking at Peyton Reed, best known for the cheerleading comedy Bring It On, and the team of Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, who co-directed the critically acclaimed Half Nelson.
The Hollywood Reporter, who broke this news, offers these details about the heroes who make up Guardians of the Galaxy.
"The movie's lineup will include Drax the Destroyer, a human resurrected as a green warrior with the sole purpose of killing Thanos (the villain in the Avengers final-scene tease); Groot, a giant tree-man; Star-Lord, a gun-toting half-human/half-alien intergalactic vigilante; Rocket Raccoon, a genetically engineered animal with a knack for guns and explosives; and Gamora, the last survivor of her species who was saved by Thanos to be his assassin but now battles him."
It still has never been confirmed or denied if this latest Marvel Studios movie will be live-action or CGI animation. We'll let you know as soon as James Gunn is confirmed.
Guardians of the Galaxy comes to theaters August 1st, 2014 and stars Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Michael Rooker, Ophelia Lovibond, Lee Pace, Glenn Close, Karen Gillan. The film is directed by James Gunn.

By the way... I did suggest we agree to disagree since it's pretty clear we're looking for very different things in a movie.

@sirdiddymus... You can't compare animation to live action. Talking animals don't translate to live action in a serious way. Just the fact that you call a 1 foot tall character a "tough little guy" kinda makes my point. The character even translated badly in the example you gave... The animated Avengers was pretty cheesy on its own but that episode was pure camp. Every character came off silly and the chirping tail wagging raccoon with the voice of a 3 pack a day longshoreman was painful to watch. Translate that to live action and you've basically remade "Superhero Movie" from 2008.

@glacia, there's an episode of Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Check out how they handled Rocket Raccoon. He's a little tough guy.

interesting choice for such a big movie, but its like with MI4 they got Brad Bird to direct and that was his first live film and did a pretty bang up job

I really don't know about this choice. While I am excited about the film, Gunn is a strange directing choice, although Disney and Marvel's strong control will pad down his style a bit, like they have with the other films. Don't get me wrong, I actually like it when they do that because it gives the series consistency.

@sirdiddymus, we'll have to agree to disagree.

@glacia, not really. Rocket Raccoon is more like Sir Didymus from Labyrinth, or the mice templar, or Usagi Yojimbo. He's a serious character who just happens to be raccoon. In the comics he is a gifted military tactician. He's not meant to be a clown like Jar Jar, or silly comic relief like the Wonder Twins.

@shuabert Yeah Slither and Super...ooooohh u were implying they aren't good....
Honestly Marvel hasn't disappointed me yet, even the two movies that are more widely considered less good, Iron Man 2 and Incredible Hulk, I thought were awesome. So I am trusting their choices.

@Bawnian©-Dexeus... "What's the damn problem with Rocket Raccoon?" Not sure if that's sarcasm or you're asking it in the sense of "What's his problem why does he suck so much". In my opinion he sort of an unholy union of Jar Jar Binks and the Wonder twins from Superfriends. The only way the character will transfer to screen without dragging the movie down is if the other characters completely dismiss him through the entire movie. He'll still be the Jar Jar Binks of the movie but at least viewers will be able to separate the character from the rest of the movie.

@dan... "You make people laugh, they tend to forgive and forget." Maybe in movies like Kick Ass, but this is more like putting Beppo the Supermonkey in the Man of Steel. I know Hollywood loves the comic relief charterers but did you really like Jar Jar Binks?

@bane5000 Not sure how people would react to Rescue. I don't mind the idea, but then I'm generally on board with however nutty they want to get.
@bawnian-dexeus I can see the animosity for Rocket subsiding if they write him really funny. You make people laugh, they tend to forgive and forget.

SPOILERS....
@bawnian-dexeus...If the description is true and it seems Pepper is inside the mansion when the attack hellicopters are shooting at it and/or when its falling off the cliff into the ocean. She may end up dying or be critically injured to the point Stark either sees he cant always save everyone, even someone so close to him or he uses the Nano Tech, thats supposed to play a part in the film with him and his armor, to help her heal and save her life.

@bane5000 Dunno. Would be better if she dies. But if the studios wants to keep her around for a while then Rescue is the other route or whichever they wish to pursue
