Green Lantern Is the New Star Wars Says Ryan Reynolds

Ryan Reynolds compares the expanded Green Lantern mythology to Star Wars
Green Lantern will bring one of DC Comics' most popular characters to life on the big screen June 17. Star Ryan Reynolds indicated recently that the expansion of this universe from the original comic books is what sold him on taking on the role of Hal Jordan. Here's what he had to say below, comparing Green Lantern to the Star Wars franchise.

"I wandered through the art department, and that's what sold me, seeing this universe that's created and the scale of it all. They're taking the Green Lantern canon from the comics and they're extending it out into this new medium. Our goal is to make the first superhero who really goes on a Star Wars kind of epic journey, and this mythology goes back a lot further than Star Wars."

The actor also talked about the tone of Green Lantern, revealing it isn't as dark as The Dark Knight, but isn't overly light in tone either.

"Tone was the biggest concern going in and then it almost became a contagion, and it became the concern of everyone and with me just harping on it. And now I feel that it's the most exciting discovery as we kept going. No, it's not dark like Christopher Nolan's Batman movies, but it isn't very light like you saw some of the [1980s] Superman movies get. The character is somewhere in the middle. He's a classic male. Han Solo, who was witty but not really funny, was one of the touchstones."

Director Martin Campbell also said that this story gave him a chance to do things he has never done before as a filmmaker.

"This was a chance to do some things I've never done before. We have a story that is very human and very much about human emotions, but what's within that story takes us off-world and into some alien settings that are extraordinary."

9 month ago I said that this will NOT be the new Star Wars. Some argued. Now... I win. GL was one of the worst comic book movies ever made. The concept was good, but the consistency was bad, just very very awful. The script was a piece a sh.t! I'm sorry for all the artists who made the visuals.

I am more excited for this movie than any of the superhero films coming out this year. I think that, in scope, it will be epic. The galaxies, all the different alien races. I can see how he can "relate" it to star wars. Not compared to, but relate to.

The People Vs. George Lucas: Wait till he sees that and the backlash George created against himself and his Star Wars. Is that what Reynolds want? Compare yourself to a good trilogy to one of the worst Franchises that went down in history? Is that what he wants for GL? Talk about shooting the horse before it gets out of the starting gate.

@skywise I agree with you, that reynolds has a lot of haters. I cant say that i hate him, i just feel that he plays the same role in every film. i understand that actors have to have their own sense of style, jim carrey was a rubber face, eddie murphy was a fast talker, keanu reeves has always been... Ted, and let me just say i am ready for him to prove me wrong, and i cant say i have seen every one of his films, i just think judging from the trailers that this will be the same acting gig that he has had in the past. I would like to see some growth, and hopefully we do, and i know how he is a fan of comics and everything, but so was bryan singer, ben affleck, i think even joel schumacher was, well he enjoyed reading super flamingo the gay dancer from the late 80's anyhow (and no i am not being homophobic, just stating a fact) but i am at least looking forward to this a bit more than thor anyhow, and hope it is as good as everyone would like for it to be.

@insertusernamehere as far as film making goes and the doors it has opened with new CG and sound elements and technology avatar is the new star wars. on the side of story and characters, it doesn't even come close

@mka47 Regardless of what is said and what MW does to gain attention i am sooooo excited to see this movie. I mean we have seen the street level super hero soooo many times. Spidey saves his girl, batman saves Gotham, Superman saved Earth. Finaly we get a cosmic hero who saves..the girl, the city, the planet and the galaxy. I hope it works out becuase this is the kind of CBM i have been waiting for.

And i dont hold it against Reynolds, i know he has a lot of haters but i am a fan. He has proven that he can do pretty much any type of movie and even tho Buried wasnt that great....i was glued to the set and it was just him. I mean he carried the whole thing on this shoulders. People were really hating on this movie when the first teasers came out but now it seems most people are singing a different tune.

    damn i cant wait!

@skywise believe me i understand, im a fan of star wars as are most people. i just feel bad for renolds because i guarantee he is a huge star wars fan too (to make quotes like that wanting to be in the same league as star wars) but now everyone just thinks he's a douche bag because they don't take a second to step back and see what he actually saying. it probably doesn't help that movieweb wants hits on their site so they throw out a headline like this and stir up a hornets nest

@mka47 i see what you mean and i agree with you. But damnit, when someone makes a statement like that, well its sort of like when the Beatles said they were more popular that jesus or when Oasis said they were more popular than the Beatles...it might have been an innocent little in-joke or what have you but taken in a certain context (or out of context in this case) there is always going to be backlash.

But your right, its just movies. Its just something to do to waste a few spare hours (of which i dont have many) so in the end its all really pointless but since we are here on a movie web site......well sh*t, there is no better place to debate these types of topics.

But i get where you are coming from.

@skywise people are just blowing things out of proportion. his quote about his character's personality being compared to that of han solo is just based on character traits."He's a classic male." not he is the new han solo, just han soloish. as for the mythology that is just the mythology behind the story, and that part i could give a crap about, i mean they are both fictional stories when it comes down to it (since this a debate i will pretend to care about this part, he says the mythology 'goes back further' than star wars, not that its deeper or better). but his quotes don't really enter the realm of comparing actual production. its not saying that this movie is going to change cinema like star wars did. his quotes are more in the vein of paying homage to star wars. he never actually says "green lantern is the new star wars or "better than star wars" like the heading of the article tries to play it or people are perceiving it

@mka47 mentioning a mythology deeper than Star Wars and relating his character to Han Solo are pretty obvious comparisons to SW.

And i will keep my panties in a twist as its much more comfy thank you.

its seems as if he's just saying its scope is epic like that of star wars was. he doesn't ever compare it to star wars. you can untwist your panties, nerds

Star Wars was a game changer. It was revolutionary (and i dont use that term lightly) in FX, editing and sound design. I dont think GL will be the new SW in that sense but as far as distant planets galactic warfare...maybe. But again, SW was to movies what Jimmy Hendrix was to guitar players.

I know Reynolds is excited about this project but come on...this isnt going to change the way we think about summer blockbusters. no way. I'm not trying to be synical, just realistic.

So.. Mr. Reynolds is what your saying, is that... Martin Campbell, plans to make an epic trilogy of Green Lantern, re-release it with altered scenes that destroy the continuity of the previous releases (To save me from posting in the distant future... Green Lantern shot first), and throw in a couple of dance routines just to please the kids in about 14 years, then make three awful prequels in about twenty years that desecrate and tarnish the love for the original three, as well as creating a marketing extravaganza being sponsored by the likes of doritos, pepsi, and kentucky fried chicken, that seems more important, than the actual movies, not to mention repackaging, and double dipping with each new format available...

Its a long shot, but if it can work for Mr. Lucas, I am sure it may be possible again... just a tip... keep George's number on speed dial.

Star Wars? Maybe. If any of you actually read the comics (I do), it's very well possible, GL is pretty damn epic. Course, we gotta see the product first before making that determination. I'm glad he's confident though, it fits with the Hal Jordan personality.
