Green Lantern 2 to Be Dark, Edgy, and Action Packed!

Green Lantern 2 promises to be dark and edgy
Green Lantern 2 promises to be dark and edgy
When weighing its budget against its box office take this past June, its clear that Green Lantern was a flop. But that isn't stopping Warner Bros. from talking about a sequel. President of the studio's film group Jeffrey Robinov considers Green Lantern's opening weekend "decent" and feels that there is an audience for the material, so a sequel, which was always planned, is imminent.

Jeffrey Robinov believes that the problem with Green Lantern's first foray onto the big screen was in its execution, not its concept. And quite frankly, they're placing all of that blame squarely on the shoulders of 70 year old director Martin Campbell, who won't likely return for second helpings even though he is contracted to do so.

Here is what Jeffrey Robinov had to say about the sequel.

"To go forward we need to make it a little edgier and darker with more emphasis on action.... And we have to find a way to balance the time the movie spends in space versus on Earth."

Greg Berlanti, Michael Green, and Marc Guggenheim, the team responsible for writing the first installment, have already written the screenplay for Green Lantern 2, but its quite likely that this particular draft will be wrecked, salvaged, and completely reworked, basically making it a reboot of the material without the origin story getting in the way.

Jeffrey Robinov also chimed in about two other DC Comics adaptations that are planned by Warner Bros. He claims that The Flash has "a solid script". And that the studio is indeed moving forward with its Justice League of America movie as planned. But there is no solid word on when this will ever happen.

Green Lantern was released June 17th, 2011 and stars Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, Temuera Morrison, Jenna Craig, Jon Tenney, Mike Doyle. The film is directed by Martin Campbell.

Green Lantern 2 is in development and stars Ryan Reynolds.

The Flash is in development .

Justice League of America is in development .

@daryltanenjielenny James Franco as Guy Gardner? He's too small to play him. And Bruce Campbell is too old to play Kyle Rayner. And that is way too many damn players in a 2nd installment lol. Also, turn off the caps lock.

Martian Campbell is a good director. The problem was the terrible script.Get the writers from JJ's Star Trek to write a movie like this, or someone like Duncan jones to direct it. people who understand that story and character come first and action last. And I agree. the movie was WAY to short 2hrs AT LEAST

Nolan Batman is no going to tie in with The Man Of Steel though based upon Nolan being the key producer....The Dark Knight series, as it has to point blanc be called, is its own charade, its own great series, a huge orb of its own!

But come on we need more of the characters to be released, but to think i would love you direct The Flash. Also needing Green Arrow, Wonder Women ( i have been penning a dark gritty, millitary esque realistic ensemble piece) more of The Green Lantern, and of course Supes himself, possibly a reference to Nolans Knight!

Franco as Flash- i'm still solid with that,

and the young beautiful Emily Browning as Wonder Women, she can hold up a performance in a big budget film (SUCKERPUNCH) and a low budget indie sex drama psychological thriller (Sleeping Beauty-oh she is).

Martin Cmbell ruined The Green Lantern, but had a good stream line and thought and exaltation though it really didnt meet the match!

i was reading some of your comments on here and some of you believe that there isnt any hope for a GL part 2 because of the story and didnt make much money and some of you thought that the movie was a fun movie not a great movie but fun for the kids to enjoy. so the question is should there be a GL 2--i will say yes because GL can be made into a great story if you take a comic like blackest night and make a really good story or follow Sinestro as he forms his own criminal corp to tackle the green lantern corp...green vs yellow. i do agree that this story wasnt as good as its should of been. i was rather disappointed because i thought this story was going to be about how green lantern and sinestro do battle. so how do u make this darker and edgier keep this story on sinestro this time and have sinestro corp start killing GL corp members. i know that this is a kids/pg13 audiences we are dealing with but if its going to be an action packed story you have to make it longer with plenty of action sequences and keep the story on SINESTRO!!! and keep that actor who played sinestro. if ryan fails on the GL2 than he needs be replace for the JLA movie.

@bane5000 - I agree, the best movies of all time are 2 hours plus.

And i understand that the Dark Knight series is great, but not all movies need to be dark. Batman is a man whose always in the shadows, thats why he's a dark character. But the Green Lantern is not, the tone of the movie to me was not the problem. All in all it was just to damn rushed, that was the main problem with me.

@themoviefanatic...comic book movies should atleast be near 2 hours or more, specially if its the first film and it being an origin story

They should make it longer then the first one, not just more dark, edgy and action packed. Green Lantern being a little over 1 hour long, is just too short for a comic book movie in my opinion.

  15. TheMime

It was all corny for The Mime....It was fine up to the point that he started using his powers..e.g the party where he did the race-car and the ramp-like thingy...that was lame. The fighting scenes where dull and lame. The movie should have ran for 2-3hrs. Green Lantern , to The Mime, is as complex a character as Batman, but in its own level of complexity. The arch of the story should have been as thrilling as the "The Dark Knight"...Many fans that The Mime talked to said that Peter Starsgaard's character (Hector Hammond) was not needed in the story...and I think they're right....in fact, we thought that it would have been better if he was saved for the next one, the medium that will bring back Parallax...maybe he found a piece of Parallax after its attack on the city.......something like that....all in all, The Mime will hold them to their promise of a more "Dark, Edgy, and Action Packed" Green Lantern because the first one didn't really live up to people's expectation.

well honestly i enjoyed GL. i thought it was a fun movie and pretty well done. though i am not now, nor was i ever, a fan of the comics so, i didn't go in biased at all. i just watched the movie and took it for what it was. and i enjoyed it. i dont have a problem with them taking it in a darker and edgier direction. i honestly think thats how ALL comic book movies should be, but instead they turn them into comedies and origin story boredom. (i mean do we REALLY need another movie explaining spider mans origin? is there a human on the planet that doesn't know this already?) even when they do the sequels, it's more about getting the laugh then getting the movie right. the subject matter in most comice is dark so the movies should reflect that. the only movies that have really captured this are nolan's batmans. he seems to be the only person around that gets that this is not comedic material to be acted out by pretty boys pining for a girl whilst dealing with a "new power". unfortunately nolan cannot direct all the superhero movies. shame. i'd love to see what he'd do with DAREDEVIL. but still, i'm looking forward to a GL sequel.

@rudy honestly Marvel has done good story telling wise but other than Iron Man and Iron Man 2, the other Avengers movies are mediocre at best. Dont get me wrong Thor and Captain America was good, im not including Incredible Hulk cause Marvel cant stay with one actor to play him. Marvel has done good with Xmen cause of Wolverine, but without Wolverine, Xmen FC was just another comic book. A very good movie but not blockbusters like Iron Man, Xmen 1,2,3, and Spider-Man 1,2,3. I think GL with a better director and a better script will bring more attention to a JLA movie. Plus honestly WB has said a JLA movie might not even use the same characters that plat GL, Superman, and Batman

I think they're gonna do a reboot after Green Lantern 2 if it's a flop as well. In my opinion, Marvel is better at making their movies work. More than DC. The Justice League better be good though. Even though they have to make movies for the other JL members like Wonder Woman, and Martian Manhunter.
Also, I have a strong feeling that The Flash movie is gonna suck.

  23. ejk1

@bawnian-dexeus Atrocitus as a stand alone villain I can get behind; pairing him with Sinestro is not. That would further my aggravation. Teaming up Sinestro with Atrocitus is wrong, for many reasons. Atrocitus is the Red Lantern, and a mortal enemy of both Hal Jordan and Sinestro. Try and find a copy of GL: Secret Origin, unless you already have it. It proves that Atrocitus should have been the main villain of the first movie.

Yeah, WB needs to watch what Marvel are doing with their films and follow suit imo. There are plenty of villains for them to chose from, just a matter of making the right one now. Looking forward to seeing what they plan on doing with The Flash and certainly the JLA!

@moviegeek They can make a really dark film, if they bother to use the right villains. The way the first film was butchered makes me think the execs don't know what they're doing.

  27. moviegeek

I still don't think there's a really great movie to be made out of this material. I don't think you can take a man with a magic green ring and make it dark and edgy. There's possibility for maybe a silly fun movie, but greatness is not plausible here.

  28. RojoDiablo

I'm with you Supes1976, I enjoyed GL also but feel the sequel absolutely needs to be edgier and darker to improve on the first (I thought the amount of action was fine but I'm never against adding more)! Reynolds was a perfect choice to play Hal and I felt the first film shouldn't have catered so much to the little kids anyway, so at least the right people see the problem areas and don't plan on making the same mistakes twice. I wish we could get an R rating for the sequel but since that is out of the question, the new director will just need to go as far as he can within the PG-13 rating! I'm also not against staying away from Earth all together, they have plenty of universe to work with, they don't need to go back & forth imo.

I really don't care what anyone says, I really liked Green Lantern. The ONLY problem that I have with it, is the character development, or lack of one. I felt like the movie was too short and if given more time to develop the characters and better editing, then it would have done much better at the BO. With that said, bring on GL 2!
