Green Hornet Will Be Similar in Tone to Pineapple Express Says Kevin Smith

Some people have been fearful for what direction Seth Rogen and Stephen Chow might be taking The Green Hornet in. After all, Rogen and his writing pal Evan Goldberg are known for their comedies. But Kevin Smith, who just finished working with Rogen on ZackandMiri told Cinema Blend’s podcast that he thinks the film will be an excellent action comedy.

Smith said “It’s not… Superhero Movie. You know, the parody film. It’s certainly not that by any stretch of the imagination. But it’s more along the lines, from what he’s talked about it, of Pineapple Express. There are lots of jokes and there’s lots of action.”

Hopefully that will set some fans minds at ease. The Green Hornet won’t be a parody of himself, nor will it be an out-and-out comedy. But it will present action and adventure mixed in with a very healthy dose of laughter and silliness. And hey, some of the best moments in superhero films are the silliest ones. Who doesn’t love watching Peter Parker experiment with his powers in the first Spider-Man?

The character was created by Fran Striker and George Trendle, who also created The Lone Ranger. Originally conceived for radio, The Green Hornet has been adapted to film, television and comics.

Stephen Chow will direct the film from a script written by Rogen and Goldberg. Rogen will star as Britt Reid/The Green Hornet, and Chow will co-star as Kato. Expect to see The Green Hornet on June 25, 2010.

The Green Hornet was released January 14th, 2011 and stars Seth Rogen, Jay Chou, Cameron Diaz, Tom Wilkinson, Christoph Waltz, David Harbour, Edward James Olmos, Jamie Harris. The film is directed by Michel Gondry.

By this, does Smith mean Green Hornet won't be funny and try to make most of it's money by drawing in stoner audiences?

If Stephen Chow is directing it, I highly doubt it'll be anything close to Pineapple Express.

You can tell me it won't be an out-and-out comedy, but seeing is believing. Having said that I will need to see a trailer for proof that's not the direction their going. The old TV show was filled Hornet and Kato action packed fight scenes, mystery behind who the villains where. I don't remember the show being about comedy

I was sort of hoping for Tony Jaa as Kato, not because he would make a better Kato (Stephen Chow is def. a better choice), but because I want to see Tony Jaa in more movies
