'Gotham': The Penguin and Alfred Cast in Batman TV Series

This upcoming Fox series based in the world of DC Comics has added two additional characters with Captain Essen and Gordon's fiancee Barbara Kean.
Four additional series regular roles have been cast in Fox and Warner Bros. Television's Gotham, which has a series commitment at the network.

Robin L. Taylor (Another Earth, Accepted, The Walking Dead) has been cast as Oswald Cobblepot (aka The Penguin). With the brains of a chess grandmaster and the morals of a jackal, Oswald Cobblepot is a low-level psychopath (for gangster Fish Mooney) who hides his sadistic lust for power behind an exquisitely polite demeanor.

Zabryna Guevara (Burn Notice, 3 lbs.) has been cast as Captain Essen. Gordon's boss at the GCPD Homicide Squad, Captain Essen balances the two worlds of police and politics with a Machiavellian skill that's as much corporate litigator as cop.

Sean Pertwee (Alan Partridge, Alien Uprising, Devil's Playground, Camelot) has been cast as Alfred Pennyworth. A tough-as-nails ex-marine from East London, Alfred Pennyworth has loyally served the Waynes. Now, in the wake of their tragic deaths, he's fiercely protective of the young Bruce Wayne.

Erin Richards (Merlin, Breaking In) has been cast as Barbara Kean. A sophisticated emergency room doctor, Barbara is the fiancée of James Gordon, joyful but with an edge of vulnerability. She stands by her future husband...which can be difficult in a world as corrupt as Gotham.

Based upon characters published by DC Comics, Gotham is a drama exploring the origin stories of Commissioner James Gordon and the villains that made Gotham famous. It was announced over the weekend that Ben McKenzie (Southland, The O.C.) has been cast in the lead role of Detective James Gordon. In Gotham, Gordon is an idealistic rookie detective for Gotham City Police Department's Homicide Squad, a former college football star and a war hero.

Bruno Heller (The Mentalist, Rome) wrote the pilot script and will serve as executive producer. Danny Cannon (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Nikita) will direct and executive produce the pilot.

Sounds good but I thought they were avoiding putting the villains in the series? If this guy's gonna play The Penguin, is he going to LOOK like him or how are they gonna tackle that origin properly enough not to lose fanboys? I mean, he was born a penguin, right?
