Godzilla Will Be 'Grounded' Says Director Gareth Edwards

Godzilla will be grounded and realistic says director Gareth Edwards
Last week, we reported that Drew Pearce had signed on to perform a script polish on Godzilla, to age up some of the characters before casting begins. Director Gareth Edwards (Monsters) recently spoke about making this creature feature more grounded than other versions.

"I've always been interested in Godzilla and the ideas around him. I really wanted to see another Godzilla film and jumped at the opportunity. My main idea was to imagine 'If this really happened, what would it be like?' I want to take a grounded, realistic approach to a Godzilla film."

The filmmaker also talked about his emotional investment in the project, and getting the visual effects right.

"I've never worked this hard, this long and been this emotionally involved in something that's lasted only a few seconds since the time I lost my virginity! But the reaction has been amazing and I can't wait for the fans to see our final product."

He also spoke about working with Legendary Pictures and his first experience on a big studio film.

"Everyone warns you about working for Hollywood and how you can get treated in a certain way but my experience has been the polar opposite. Thomas Tull (founder of Legendary) has been very supportive."

Godzilla comes to theaters May 16th, 2014 and stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, Ken Watanabe, David Strathairn, Richard T. Jones, Sally Hawkins. The film is directed by Gareth Edwards.

Im starting to think that the studio exes are wildly out of touch with the American people. Who's really asking for another godzilla movie? I know they're all rich as sh*t, but come on

@mbrandon11 -- Yeah, because you can't name any other movie to contradict me. Good film-making? Well, that explains why Twilight is making over hundreds of millions...

Maybe next time you can draw actual comparisons, that'd be nice. Big boys like "The Avengers"? I thought they had a more refined taste in film.

    Silly me.

    You too. ;)

....ok well maybe you need to research films slightly more then if you think Superman was the only film that went down that route, PLUS the fact your opinion of the Avengers sucked, which means you differ on your thoughts regarding good filmmaking with about 95% of the people out there. Anyway - like you say, going round in circles. So maybe do some research then come back and talk with the big boys ;) Have a good one. @XxNickTheFilmCriticXx

@ROFLitschristian -- Maybe not on the same exact level, but pretty damn close. I can't imagine a man having his back broken, and walking away practically unscathed, whilst shortly after making an impossible jump. A city being terrorized for months, with "Batman" being the ONLY person that can save it. A man that can take down hordes of men, even though they are equipped with guns.

Oh, and a f*cking city that looks up to a man dressed as a f*cking bat. Need I say more?

No, it wasn't. You're just taking the term "fan boy" to an insane level.

@XxNickTheFilmCriticXx As unrealistic as Godzilla? Please tell me you're joking. Batman isn't as real as the films have made him out to be, but come on. As unrealistic as Godzilla? Seriously? That was a sh*tty attempt to prove me wrong.

@ROFLitschristian -- You're joking, right? Get off my high-horse? Sorry, buddy, but that "horse" is non-extant. Try again.

The SAME could be said with Batman. It's as unrealistic as Godzilla. And don't you dare tell me otherwise.

he wants it to be grounded in reality?? *shocking* wants to film in the reality of "what would people really do if this really happened"?? *what a revolutionary concept* if only other film writers, directors, producers and even TV production companies would follow this brave new and untapped approach to film-making... *rolls eyes*
don't get me wrong... i love that film makers want to be more grounded in their approach, but Edwards is speaking as though this is ground-breaking work. has he not seen Cloverfield? Any of Nolan's Batman movies? heard Zach Snyder talk about MoS being "more realistic" and even saying/asking "how would people really react if Superman were real"?
    lol
"realism" is good, but unfortunately become TRENDY. sigh

  15. ROFLitschristian

@XxNickTheFilmCriticXx You're the only one implying that everything pertains to Nolan. It's a film about a large dinosaur/reptile... attacking a city. That premise and the term "grounded" or "realistic" have absolutely NO business being in the same film together. So get off your high horse, buddy. You know it's true.

@mbrandon11 -- After reading your post; likewise!

Fantasy: Yeah, your intellectual speaking, and elaborate reasoning are too complex for my social skills, and has completely fried my brain.

Reality: No, I didn't. No, he didn't? Besides the new Superman(which he's working on), I don't see any film deliberately trying to be like The Batman trilogy. Every other movie is going their usual route. They sprinkle "realistic", and "grounded" here and there to grasp your attention. In reality, it holds no baring to his aforementioned works.

Yeah, and "The Avengers" sucked. Draw another (valid) comparison. Or they're just trying something new. Yep, never thought of that. You can only go in circles for so long.

    To an extent.

With only one or two films in-mind, that's not much of a bandwagon. To each his own.

@XxNickTheFilmCriticXx I think you've drastically misinterpreted our points (especially mine) but that's ok. Don't hurt yourself whatever you do trying to figure all this out.

All i was suggesting was that Nolan has changed modern filmaking... well, blockbuster filmmaking. You may say it happened before him but not enough to effect all films in the same realm. I'm not saying "Nolanizing" a film is always need. I think we all saw that with that small film Avengers. That wasn't grounded at all - was just a kick ass comic book film. However, if the plot of a film is "Out-there" then yes, i think most filmmakers, especially producers, will be looking to "Keep it grounded, realistic" BECAUSE of what Nolan and his team achieved. Who can blame em... but they're still jumping on the bandwagon. :)

@mbrandon11 -- They weren't blatantly advertised, but that element was already there. What difference does it make?

@ridgl -- Last time I checked, we haven't seen an once of footage, yet. So, how would you have the faintest idea of how the new Godzilla is going to be? No, it's not. The new James Bond isn't "grounded" in any way, nor is Star Trek, or any of the latest Marvel movies, for that matter.

@ROFLitschristian -- You strongly implied it. Keep telling yourself that, buddy. Maybe it'll make you feel better. I have yet to see a movie remotely close to the likens of The Batman trilogy, and just people the producers acknowledge a certain element, does not mean that they're trying to "Nolanize it".

How brainwashed are you? Trying to be "realistic" = ripping off of Christoper Nolan.

    Yes, and no.

I guess what you're all trying to say is that movies should STOP trying to be realistic, because that means they're trying to plagiarize the "great" Christoper Nolan? How long will it take before that kind of thinking dies?

@XxNickTheFilmCriticXx today they would be. i have no problem with things getting sequels or prequels or even rebooted. I understand that is the way the market is right now. Its that I can predict exactly HOW they're going to be done that is irritating. So yes, a gritty, down-to-earth Godzilla is a boring idea to me because that's all we've been getting. Gritty Batman, Marvel Movies, soon-to-be Superman, James Bond, Star Trek, etc.

@bawnian-dexeus It's a good question. I remember a few years ago Japan released an animated film featuring two of its most famous properties, child detective Conan Edogawa ("Case Closed" in the US) and master thief Lupin The 3rd (same name). So it isn't out of the realm of possibility that they will ever join, it's more likely though that Gamera may need a popularity boost.

If this is grounded, then they better have Dinosaurs in this, cause if anyone knows the Godzilla series like I have, that Godzilla used to be Godzillasaurus (yes there is one in the Japanese movies), and a T-rex like monster called Gorosaurus. If this were to be an origins story, so bring in the Dino's.

Though a B level monster hero in comparison, he was bad ass. Hell, he even made an appearance in Justice League Unlimited
