In short, Brian Rogers stated that he plans to do for the Godzilla franchise what Batman Begins and The Dark Knight did for the character of Batman. This will be an origin story that will stay close to the roots of the 1956 original, while at the same time rebooting it for today's more sophisticated audiences. No script has been settled on, with different drafts currently being looked at. No director is in place yet, and the rumor that WETA is working on the designs for Godzilla is false. Brian Rogers did confirm, though, that Godzilla will be fighting one or more monsters in the film.
Here is what Brian Rogers had to say (Zennie62.com video interview is embedded below}):
"2012 is the targeted release date. This is a large project to set up, so we are aiming for that point. We hope we can make it. We met with Toho Pictures to set up a 3D feature film of Godzilla. It did take a huge amount of time to do those negotiations. Legendary Pictures seemed to be the right home for it, because they wanted to do a complete reboot of the character, and bring it to a new audience, so to speak. In terms of the reboot, all of the conversations we had with Legendary Pictures made it clear that they wanted to pay homage to the original Godzilla character. They did not want to make the same decisions that Sony did. They wanted to go back to the history of the film. They also wanted to do a project that was current. And exciting to the viewing audience. It's what Legendary did with Batman. They reinvented Batman, they brought in stronger elements to make it a stronger project. We felt very good about getting involved with Legendary. It's a great place for this project."
About whether there will be another monster, or monsters, in the film, such as Mothra, Brian Rogers stated:
"I can safely say that there will be other monsters, or a monster, that Godzilla will fight. I think, traditionally, those are the kinds of situations that the fan base wants to see. With the Sony film, not having another monster was more of a drawback than an asset. Just having Godzilla fight the US army was not the spirit of the character."
Godzilla comes to theaters in 2014. The film is directed by Gareth Edwards.

While we'r at it. i DO NOT wanna see his eyes light up. or his mouth. if he shoots fireballs from his mouth, that will b fine, but w/.out the nron lighting in his eyes, This should b faded lizard, very good details but but to the point where hes 100% clean. And try not to make it all dark scenes. i really hate when i cant see watever it is that is there. I dont mind rain, clouds, snow dirt, or even water shots but i really hate night shots. With that in mind. If he happenes to kill/eat. there better be blood/gore, not sum kinda off screen death. no shiny teeth. he better b/look beliveable. and it will turn out really well.

Alot of people might or might not agree w me on this but i would want a 1950s type of godzilla movie to be made. not like the last remake. but much rather science fictional. In other words If this takes place in new york. I would want it to look like ny from king kong, with older buildings, clothings, car/buse, ect. a cheap army, not sum kinda gorverment or jets flying over shooting at it in which that wouldnt happen in reality. In movies they make it seem like they can star a war blowing chit up. in the mid of a million people. But like i said this would look sweet in an older environment. with lil green jeeps and 1950s guns, and bombs, dirt or lil roads If they follow the same route as they did w king kong, it would look awsome, but w/out a very long story. and w/out those jungle people.

Scratch what I said.....The Mime totally agrees with @JasonKat.... "whoever made the awesome, all-incredible, super cool, best-remake-ever KING KONG should make this GODZILLA, with Steven Spilburg on special E-Fex." And darn it, this should be shot in IMAX. The Mime is sure that if they shoot this classic in 3D...it will suck, maybe....

Peter Jackson made King Kong. As of the American version of Godzilla I actually enjoyed it despite the cheesiness.

Hey that reminds me. are they gonna make cloverfield 2? last time i heard it would b out in 2012 but im unsure. Which by the way was a very good movie. If Gonzilla was made sumthing like this, it would prob b sweet! but people will prob start bbitchin that they ripped it off of cloverfield.

@soylentgreen2...yeah i know, cloverfield was suppsed to be his way of making a sort of godzilla for america...but imagine what he could do with someone iconic as godzilla and up the ante on, the action, destruction and monsters in general

Hopefully they bring Godzilla back in all his radioactive-scales glory and atomic breath, and not that long slender creature from the Sony film or anything like that. They also need to remember that Godzilla is a "good guy" - even if the people don't realize it. That is what the spirit off the character is. I wonder if it will be in Tokyo, seeing as how Godzilla is freakin' Tokyo-based and this would supposedly be an origin story. I wonder if they will bring any baddies back too, I wouldn't mind seeing Rodan or Mechagodzilla back. But it is an origin, so they would need to choose wisely.
This situation reminds me of a quote from Xander Harris off an episode of Buffy:
"Matthew Broderick didn't kill Godzilla. Matthew Broderick killed a big dumb lizard. That was not the real Godzilla."

ahhhh nooo. i dont want James Cameron directing this movie, he will b milking it 24/7 like he did w avatar. and he'll b throwing in his 3d crap. as if that will make it even better than 2d. Micheal Bay will just get sumbody hurt so not him either, lol, I think peter jackson or whoever made king kong, would b a much better choice. and maybe steven spilburg for the special f/x.

king kong looked real in sum parts of its movie, compared to the dinos he fought with. As for the last godzilla ..he didnt look real at all. however it was a big step up from the 70s remake. the best part was the big footprint near the shipwreak. So hopfully whoever he fights with in this new remake, that its real enough. or have more detailed to them.

lol no. Jurassic Park 1 had better visual effects. It looked so photo realistic compared to king kongs dinosaurs. WETA has only been around since 2001 when ILM was here since the 70s. ILM has won more oscars then WETA has. I'm not saying WETA is bad but when it comes to special effects, ILM is number one. Not to mention Weta and ILM worked together on avatar.

The Narrator: The Better Man
@Dave, I disagree. WETA put far more creativity and layers to their creatures than ILM did with Jurassic Park 3 (closest timeline wise). Not to mention character. WETA does their homework, plain and simple, and although ILM is a close runner up, its just that; a runner up, one that has a pretty decent monopoly in Hollywood. Give it to the little guys!

The potential is huge for a re-imagining of all the old monsters to come back and spawn multiple big budget, mega destruction movies. I'm geeking the f*ck out thinking about it.

I'm a huge Godzilla fan, and this sounds like it could brings a resurrection to the old, classic Japanese monsters. Bring on Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, King Ghidorah, Mechagodzilla(yeah, I know it's a robot, but a badass robot nonetheless), and any of the other monsters they can update to modern times.
