Godzilla Reboot Gets a Frank Darabont Rewrite

Frank Darabont will rewrite the Godzilla screenplay
Frank Darabont will rewrite the Godzilla screenplay
The Walking Dead creator Frank Darabont has been brought on for a final rewrite of the Godzilla screenplay.

David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight Rises), Max Borenstein (The Seventh Son), and Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3) have previously worked on the script. While the project has gained another writer, it has also lost two producers, Dan Lin and Roy Lee, who initially secured the rights from the Japanese company Toho.

We reported last month that production is scheduled to begin in March, with Gareth Edwards attached to direct. That report revealed this project to be more "grounded" than previous versions.

Frank Darabont has been keeping busy with television projects over the last few years, creating The Walking Dead and his new TNT series L.A. Noir. His last work on the silver screen was Stephen King's The Mist in 2007, which he wrote and directed.

Godzilla comes to theaters May 16th, 2014 and stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, Ken Watanabe, David Strathairn, Richard T. Jones, Sally Hawkins. The film is directed by Gareth Edwards.

GODZILLA.... The atomic age leaviathan. The symbol of man made and natural destruction. Much like the tsunami, Earthquake, and atomic reactor leaks. The first cinamatic Monster ever to make man feel really insignificant.. The first time they tried to remake it was crap! Being handled by a jerk , who gave us a cheech lizard that ran away from heliocopters. The real one would have blasted them from the sky. Toho promptly stripped them of their rights to make another film. Let's hope that this time the project is given to more caring hands; who truely understand the legendary monster's ways. As for you geeks out there.. Godzilla is mutated by radioactive fallout and altered by it. Much like the incredible Hulk. If you manage to wound him.. it will be temporary. He has a quick healing ability.

@narrator All I'm gonna say is that this isn't the first film Goyer has had rewrites done on. I'm waiting to see what a certain segment of MW users says about this story. This story about the Big Green Lizard just has a "blue" feeling to it, lol.

@narrator He penned and directed The Invisible, Blade: Trinity and The Unborn. They turned out to be sh*t

That's just it thought, @bawnian-dexeus. I don't see any "rage". Rewrites happen all the time and they're happening more and more often, unfortunately. Producers bailing on a cash cow like this, however, isn't something that happens often. Darabont is doing a rewrite, but I hardly see that as a deciding factor one way or another.

@ejk1 Are you referring to the fact that the man hasn't penned a decent thing, solo, for a decade? Lol.

@narrator@bawnian-dexeus Rewrites? Of a Goyer script? I don't believe it, lol.

@narrator The rewrites sort of sparked a bigger rage than the producers leaving

  12. the Narrator

I love how no one is bothering to acknowledge the fact that the two producers who originally managed to secure the rights for this film are leaving. That's a pretty bad sign, folks. If I were to read into things, I'd say that those two Japanese producers, who had to have been passionate for the project to have secured the illusive rights, probably didn't like the direction the project was going and bailed. Producers don't bail lightly, especially not on a project as substantial as Godzilla. This news and the rewrites has me mega concerned for this film.

Fanboys can be fanboys, but I'm not hearing anything good.

And I'm tired of the whole "grounded" issue. It's Godzilla, okay?

Giant monster terrorizing city with (hopefully) an adversary of equal or greater fighting power to battle....What the hell is in that script?

@The-Mudder-F-cking-Loud-Killer If Gareth directs this movie like in Monsters then it would fail miserably. This is Godzilla were talking about, a big monster destroying everything in his path including other monsters from alternate universes or whatever they came from. It has to work on it's own rather than copying the style of the movie Monsters.

@NeonKazma is there still hope...the news was just so heart warming, specially as the news was released with the director, but these ufcking script rewrites just do it Monsters style.
