Godzilla Gets Director Gareth Edwards

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have nabbed Monsters' director Gareth Edwards to helm their upcoming Godzilla reboot. Warner Bros. is co-financing and will distribute the monster-sized thriller, with Legendary's Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni producing alongside Dan Lin, Roy Lee, and Brian Rogers.

While Edwards' Monsters might sound similar in theme to the legendary exploits of Toho's Godzilla, its tone was quite different, with a story that focused on two lovers navigating a landscape where the giant creatures were used as background atmosphere more than anything else. Some fans have even been shocked by the actual lack of monsters in Monsters. But it was a strategic use of tentacles, and a climactic ending that found two of the octopus like creatures fighting in an abandoned gas station that helped land the director his Godzilla gig.

Legendary Pictures actually sought out the director after seeing Monsters, hoping he'd want to be a part of the project. Gareth will work alongside an as-yet-not hired writer in bringing this project to the big screen. David Callaham wrote the frist draft of the screenplay, but he is no longer with the movie. It is not clear if that draft will be completely scrapped, or if elements of it will remain in play.

No story details have been revealed at this time.

Godzilla comes to theaters in 2014. The film is directed by Gareth Edwards.

All in all......The Mime bet this will turn out better than Piranha 3D..........which is, by the way, one of the worst remakes The Mime has ever seen. Remember the part where the penis was floating in the water and one of the fishes just came and eat it......f*ck that sh!t.....

PS American Godzilla was just a remake of Ray Harryhausen Beast from 20,000 fathoms. They even filmed at the Seaport docks and Wall st. like the original. No originality whatsover. Sorry Mr. Iguana.

He must of come real cheap cause Monsters suck being a love story, yeah the cretures were screwing not fighting and he got the job because of that. I smell Cloverfield all over again and I hated that one too. Why doesn't the Big G get the proper treatment. How hard can it be? Jeez..

Still have yet to see Monsters, but I am liking the sound of this. I grew up on the japanese Godzilla movies, so I have very high expectations for it. But each piece of news I hear about this makes me have more faith in it, I am really excited for this.

uhh... that middle paragraph contradicts itself. Soo we aren't supposed to compare Monsters and Godzilla as similar works because the former focused on a love story

i really dont see the point of these movies. it's the exact same movie everytime. big lizard shows up somewhere, starts destroying stuff and breathing fire, people run screaming, end. i dont get it. why do they keep trying to make more of these movies? the plot never really changes. what can you really DO with it? and does anyone remember the godzilla that came out about 12 yeas ago? yeah......my point exactly.
