The iconic 60's sitcom Gilligan's Island coming to the bigscreen
According to Variety, Charles Roven and Richard Suckle are onboard to produce for Atlas, with Brad Copeland penning the screenplay.
The plans are for a contemporary take on the well-known premise and characters.
"The characters are so good," Roven added. "We think it's going to be a great story to transport these cultural icons to the modern day."
The 98 episodes of Gilligan's Island, starring Bob Denver as the hapless title character, centered on the wacky misadventures of seven castaways -- two crew members, a millionaire couple, a professor, a movie star and a girl-next-door type -- on an uncharted and uninhabited island in the Pacific.
Co-stars were Alan Hale Jr., Tina Louise, Dawn Wells, Jim Backus, Russell Johnson and Natalie Schafer.
No casting has been set although Sherwood Schwartz said in an interview last year that he was interested in Michael Cera playing the lead role.
Production could start as early as next year.

one of the few updates i'd love to see. i agree the characters are amazing and this could be a fantastic film (or maybe TV series if done well - most updates suck; Hawaii 5-0 prove me wrong!).
my two cents...
> Cera - bad choice for Gilligan (i have no desire to see his whiney, emo self in such an iconic role - needs to be an unkown!)
> Keep it classy/clean (no need to sex it up). Keep the comedy clean and above the belt. Update doesn't mean you have to lose class like the rest of culture.
> Have an end in mind without twenty sequels
> Try to keep it more Castaway and less "Lost" or original Gilligan's Island when random people just "happen" to already be on this "deserted" island or find it on accident (or magically make it off the island, though the USS Minnow's crew is still stranded).

http://bobdenver.com/Maynard_s_CoffeeHouse/maynard_s_coffeehouse.html My tribute to Bob can be found here. Not long after it was posted there by Dreama Denver the "Submit" button was removed, so I don't think she wants that poem to leave that page!

I agree with Jesse Eisenberg and Danielle Panabaker, but not too sure about the rest. Would still love to see Hugh Laurie as The Professor instead of Tennant. He's The Doctor already. Paul Bettany would be a good Professor as well. But I'm sure Hollywood will be even more off than we are. Who knows. I'm sure that it'll be in in the theater, out of the theater, on DVD, and in the bargain bin before anyone can say, S-S-S-S-S-Skipperrrrrrrrr!!!!

The Narrator: The Better Man
Actually I don't mind this. The original was nothing special. Funny? Yeah, but even for its time, it wasn't that good. A bit depleting to me.
This could be good. Bring an overused idea and make it a comedy for the modern audience. But no Michael Cera! If anything Jesse Eisenberg would be a good Gilligan, or even John Crasinski. Adrien Brody is great too if they want an older version.
As for the rest of the cast:
Skipper - Steve Kahan (Simple. Look at the pic and then compare their acting movies etc.)
Thurston Howell - Alan Ruck (Looks the part, and he needs a new role in a comedy)
Eunice Wentworth - Diane Lane (Can look older or younger)
Ginger Grant - Malin Ackerman (Could pull off being a bit stuck up but with a quick tongue.)
Marry Ann - Danielle Panabaker (Young, beautiful, eye candy)
The Professor - David Tennant (I'd love to see him in a serious role and this could really work).
This is a good cast, which can pay respects to the older versions of their characters while making it their own. And it is budget friendly.
I too thought Paul Giamatti in this movie @Vanboy, so I say he should be the radio voice or something.

WHY!?! Nobody wants this damn movie. Move over Charlie's Angels remakes, Walmart's bargain bin will be getting juuust a tad more crowded.

One way to tarnish an otherwise classic comedy. Just let it be. Michael Cera????? Seriously flawed already. BIG FLOP.

Michael Cera in the lead role?? I haven't liked him in anything so far. Almost all actors I like in almost anything. I have nothing against him because I don't know him. On second thought he may be ok for the role of Gilligan! Gilligan's Island used to be one of my most Favourite shows! But as regards the bottom 2 comments >if you don't get good characters; as good as the original, I don't think you'll get a terribly good following. I think that the original was so Perfect, that if you don't get the right characters it just wouldn't feel right in going to see it. I'll most likely Will go see it. I will Not go see it if Jack Nicholson or Hugh Grant is in it. Period. Thank you So Much for bringing it back. That is so good of you. I Wish you would start production sooner than next yr., because we aren't getting any younger and some of us saw it when we were around 14 or so.
