Stephen Sommers exits G.I. Joe 2
It has been confirmed that two agents who represent other filmmakers have in fact been approached about their clients taking over the reigns of this franchise. Paramount has declined to comment on the possibility of a new helmer behind G.I. Joe 2, but both agents were told that Sommers would not be stepping behind the camera for this installment.
While shooting G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Sommers came under much scrutiny from fans, and there were reports that he was having a difficult time seeing eye-to-eye with the studio. Those rumors were seemingly put to rest when it was announced early last year that he would be coming back for the sequel.
At this time, Stephen Sommers is prepping a Tarzan relaunch, but he does not have anything else on his plate. And he does not have any project that is ready or nearing a set start date. Zombieland screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are still attached to the Untitled G.I. Joe Sequel, and have been working on the script for more than a year.
G.I. Joe Retaliation was released March 28th, 2013 and stars Dwayne Johnson, Jonathan Pryce, Byung-hun Lee, Elodie Yung, Ray Stevenson, D.J. Cotrona, Adrianne Palicki, Channing Tatum. The film is directed by Jon M. Chu.

I liked the first film actually, great popcorn flick! Could have been better but it certainly wasn't horrible. I would have liked to see what direction this guy took the sequel myself and improved on his earlier effort.

It's like instead of having parts "G.I. JOE2, G.I. JOE3 4.. ect. Each movie that is made, can just be a "single" film. So in other words watever happened in 1 film..stays that way. In "rise of cobra" they caught him (cobra) and Destro. in the new film, cobra and destro are lose because its another story. something like this would be kool. kinda like the cartoons, each 1 has its own llil story.
On a side note, not every movie will have all of its cast. Just the characters intended for that film alone.
It doesnt even have to take place now, it can take place in the 80s 90s or a world in between.

I can agree with that, @Jasonkat. Like Aronofsky's Wolverine movie. Yes, it is Wolverine with the same actor and a sequel, but it will stand apart from the other movie, something I'm 100% behind.

But what's done is done, its all up to the next director to fix these errors and just focus on sumthing better, maybe bring a real good series that was kool in the cartoon. into a live movie. then again. u know wat would b kool too? if gi joe2 wasnt tied on to the first film. I know that would throw alot of people off but it would b like none of that ever happened. and just go a diff route. sounds like a reboot to me but if u keep the same cast, it will work just fine.

How old or young Channing Tatum looked wasn't my problem with him... it was his bad acting. As with everyone else. Things should improve though, assuming they hire a director with more talent.

@incmob, i agree w ya on that. The vision of gi joe i had in mind is NOTHING to wat the film turned out to be. My idea of it would of been a more "ADULT" VERSION" w blood, bad lang, & part/nudity in it. It would have been sumwat of a serious war film sumthing like "blackhawk down"and ya like u said "call of duty" a more powerful hit. cobra would of been real evil. the gi joes wouldnt b the best force but a kickass one that knows how to put on a good fight. I didnt really have a prob w any of the cast, they did good, i know people bbitch about duke being to young or most/ but this is gi joe when it began, even tho duke looked older in the toons.

@JasonKat... terminator 2 was superior to the original in almost everyway, although the first seemed a bit more on the suspenseful side (terminator to alien, as terminator 2 to aliens) but honestly taking sommers out, i would actually not be opposed to a complete reboot in a couple of years personally, and make it like the cartoon with a bit of call of duty thrown in. i dont care how sexy these characters look in all black leather... it gave them very little individuality unlike how the comics and cartoon were. I remember them saying how the original cobra commander helmet and hood seemed cheezy and not fitting for the film, but that defines him... the costumes, the vehicles, all of those things were characters in the comics and the toons... even with the toys, didnt seem right for destro to be guided by my hands into battle in a pink barbie jeep... it took them this long to get it wrong for a film, lets hope it takes them alot less time to get it right.

@Daveactor7 lol I didnt know SS didnt direct Mummy 3. He was one of the producers though. I havent seen The Rock or Bad Boys.
@JasonKat GI Joe 1 is horrible. All of the actors besides Marlon Waynes and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (exception for Dennis Quaid) did a horrible job. the actors, Channing Tatum is not a good actor at all. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a great actor, as well as Dennis Quaid. Marlon Waynes is ok. There are so many huge flaws with GI joe 1.

gi joe, isnt trash, it wasnt bad and its not the worst movie ever made. i loved it. yes could of been better but it wasnt bad. bad would b part2 to come up w nothing. Whoever the hell directs this should focus on story/plot. keep the same cast they were all great just change their way of being, its not that they suck at acting, its the script they got that sucked.. u can have the best actor kill a movie all because wat he has to work with, isnt good. So wat gi joe needs is a good storyboard. its all up to the writers and directors to bring a great movie to the table. other than that, every actor/actress will have sumthing to work with and gi joe will blend in nicely.

@Cartman WHAT THE F*CK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?!?!?!?!? Steven Sommers is not a great director, he's probably the worst director in hollywood besides Michael Bay. At least Michael Bay has had ONE good film. the original Transformers. SS has had no good films. The first Mummy was so bad, that I turned it off an hour in. The Mummy 3 blew sh*t. I'm not even going to think about thinking about seeing Mummy 2. The first GI Joe not only an epic fail on a filmmaking level, but a definite succeed on a trash/failing level. He directs his movies so they are way over-serious.
Problems with GI Joe1: The script, visuals, acting, too many action scenes, plot, direction, character development, had very high predictability, the over-seriousness, the failing of trying to be badass, the pacing, the writing, the humor fell flat, too many love-triangles (that were not executed), the showing of too many flash-backs, and some other stuff. I just wrote down 3 lines of problems wrong with the first film.
I wont see the 2nd GI Joe. And the whole point of this article was that SS is not directing GI Joe 2. Yet, you said "SS is gonna make this 2nd an EPIC after all that -ve reviews,.. I trust him,". And haha @Narrator, your comment to Cartman is hilarious. This film will most likely blow, except if they choose a good director. For now, I am not seeing it.

The State of Play director is having Chanin Tatum in his supposedly Gladiatorial , well his films are grand, except Tatum will destory it, also Sommers leaving, hes already set the vibe for this series: TRASH!

Sommers is very much like Michael Bay. He has somewhat of a knack for action and special effects, but he sucks at telling a story.

I personally like Sommers but for this franchise I don't think he should be allowed to touch it. He's not the right type of director for it, I can see him handle family based films. Without all the CGI effects.
I just wish he would return to The Mummy series, the third film suffered from his lack of attention.

@ The Narrator you said the words perfectly. GIJ could have been a good movie, but sommers made this movie to be nuthing but a mediocre foreplay, the suits, the gadgetry, spy like scenes, this just didnt add up. I had hoped to see GIJ in a more normal non-fictionary situation without the fan-dangles. The Script and visual effects were even the worst. I belive GIJ should have had a dark atmosphere probably in post apocalyptic WW4 kinda feel. more hardcore and more focus on the characters and there specialties. Well lets just hope sumthing like that can derive from GIJ:2
