Director Brian Taylor and co-director Mark Neveldine talk about what to expect from Ghost Rider 2
Nicolas Cage, director Brian Taylor and co-director Mark Neveldine recently wrapped filming on Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance in Europe and directing duo had time to speak at length about the project in ThinkHero's latest "For Your Consideration" podcast. Below are some excerpt's on what they had to say about the next Ghost Rider film.

On their vastly different take on the sequel:

"We basically said, we want to do it, [would] absolutely love to do it, but it's gotta be 100% different from the first movie, everything, except for Nic. We want the character to look different, feel different, sound different. The backstory of the character's different, the origin of the story is expanded upon in ways that the first movie didn't hint at, at all. The location's different, the whole cast is different; the only thing that's the same is Nic...It's pretty much a reboot, only with the same actor, which makes it: a requel. Or a seboot, I can't decide which one I like better."

What attracted Brian Taylor to the project:

"The first attraction was Nic and the second was the character and just how cool it could be. [I wanted to] kinda make the Ghost Rider movie that I wished I had seen before."

Brian Taylor on the budget rumors:

"The reports of the budget of Ghost Rider have been greatly exaggerated. It's about the same as [Gamer]. We didn't have a lot of money to make this film...but we're pretty creative. It's gonna look fuckin' huge."

On the characters and when to expect the first footage from the movie:

"[Blackout's] a fun character. His powers are pretty cool, we did things with his powers that aren't in the original comic books...We're gonna do a huge splash at the Comic-Con. That's when we really want people to see what the new, evolved Ghost Rider looks like as well as the first peeks at the villains."

Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance was released February 17th, 2012 and stars Nicolas Cage, Violante Placido, Ciarán Hinds, Idris Elba, Johnny Whitworth, Fergus Riordan, Spencer Wilding, Sorin Tofan. The film is directed by Mark Neveldine, Brian Taylor.

@ejk1 Just because Marvel is attached, I don't think "they" are actually financing this... Marvel's film credits revolve around Iron Man, Thor, Captain America & The Avengers. They are the movies they are producing, financing and have creative control over...

Unfortunately, the rest of the Marvel characters, The X-Men, Wolverine, Daredevil, Fantastic Four, Spider-Man & Ghost Rider all have their film rights owned by other production companies, who, as we are seeing, are not willing to relinquish those rights and instead make sub-par films just to wring every dollar they can from them...

And who suffers? The characters, the fans, and the movie-going public in general... The characters and fans aren't shown the due respect they deserve, and the general movie-going public are subjected to films that become cliche and "run-of-the-mill"...

This is not a good thing for us, we the fans of comics!

But I do agree with you, regarding DC... They seriously need to get their butts into gear and branch out! I am loving what I am hearing about Dark Knight Rises & Snyder's take on Superman... and I tentatively await to see how good Green Lantern is... Parts of the trailer looked epic! Other parts looked... cheesy... And can't say that what I am hearing about the Wonder Woman TV series sounds all that promising... With such well known characters as Wonder Woman, The Flash, The Justice League, etc, why aren't DC making these films a priority?

As a very biased, heart-on-his-sleeve Marvel fan, it is saying a lot for me to say this, but "C'mon, DC, step up to the plate!"

Oh, and FOX, Sony and you other production companies, please stop screwing over our beloved characters... if you could kindly return the rights BACK to Marvel, we'd all REALLY appreciate it...!

So Marvel can waste money on this, but DC can't find the dough for Wonder Woman? Something is wrong here.

1st film was kool but not great. I hope this requel i mean seboot..lol comes out great in every way. hope its an R-rated with either blood, gore or nudity not to mention bad lang. but other than that..with plenty of action, not 1 of those telling the story as they go along kinda way. like those movies where they start off.. '180 year ago blah blah...then present day..blah blah.. no this better b kool. But why does 2012 have to b so far away? i want it to b near already cause dang there so many blockbuster films coming in 2012. cant wait!

The first one was goofy fun in a sort of bad, grindhouse way. I'm glad Wes Bently isn't coming back because that guy is f*cking awful.

I don't dislike Nic, but he's not young enough for me to like him with this project. He has a certain style and I've liked him best as a villain. I understand the GR is an anti-hero, still not liking Nic being tied to this, just not too interested.

I wasn't terribly disappointed with the first film. I'm just not a fan of Mark Steven Johnson's directing style. To me, it's too artificial, so I'll be interested to see a fresh perspective on Ghost Rider. As for Nic, I still think he's too old for the Johnny Blaze role.

Two things from Taylor's comments that concern me: 1) Nic's involvement is what interested them most in the project and not the character. That can't be good. 2) They apparently have added to Blackout's abilities, which if you want to piss off the comic book loyalists start screwing with their characters.

Nic "i can&#180t act strait" Cage... if the dude really reads comic books and truelly knows what the Ghost Rider is about he shouldn&#180t have made the first movie... the script sucked, his acting sucked the effect sucked! Somebody get him to have some coaching lessons with Garth Ennis (afterall it seems that nobody wants to change the lead actor...=///)
