Ghost Rider Sequel May Move Forward Without Nicolas Cage

Columbia Pictures wants to make a sequel before the rights revert back to Marvel
We reported back in January that Ghost Rider 2 was in the works and now a new story reveals that the film could go on without its original star. Vulture is reporting that Columbia Pictures wants to move forward with Ghost Rider 2 and if Nicolas Cage can't commit to the film by the end of the year, they could end up making the film without him.

It was said that if Columbia isn't in production on the sequel by November 14 - the date the studio's rights expire - the rights to the franchise would revert back to Marvel's new owner, Disney. Right now it's not quite clear if the actor's schedule will allow him to come back, as it was said that Disney hopes to be shooting National Treasure 3 as early as this fall, with Cage returning to star. The site also reports that Columbia has asked for an extension of the November 14 deadline.

A script by David S. Goyer is currently in place, but the project doesn't have a director, as our earlier report stated that the original director, Mark Steven Johnson, would not be directing the sequel.

We'll be sure to keep you posted on any further Ghost Rider 2 updates as soon as we have more information.

Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance was released February 17th, 2012 and stars Nicolas Cage, Violante Placido, CiarĂ¡n Hinds, Idris Elba, Johnny Whitworth, Fergus Riordan, Spencer Wilding, Sorin Tofan. The film is directed by Mark Neveldine, Brian Taylor.

i thought daredevil was amazing but yeah i agree that mark did screw up ghost rider a bit. the visuals were great but the story could have definitely been better and not so cheesy. so then i guess it wasnt really marks fault either but the script is to blame. oh well, i think it is a great idea for them to reboot it and get it right this time just like what happened with the hulk. the first one by ang lee was good but still something wasnt quite right about it and then the new one came around and blew it out of the water. lets hope they get it right this time

Cage wasn't the problem. The problem was the script, which wasn't detailed enough. If they added ten more minutes of film, giving background info, then this movie would have been much better. By the way, I feel the same way about the Daredevil movie. That movie makes much more sense when watching the director's cut.

I agree with Monkeyclaw. I liked Cage in the first one. I think he did a great job. Monkeyclaw, I think it's age disassociation that's getting them.

And yes Yahzee, I would like to see Cage in this again. I totally agree with you. I don't know why people give him sh*t. It's pathetic.

And Sam Elliot.... It would be cool if they brought him back in too. Everything he does rocks!

Forget Cage and how much control Marvel has, the most important aspect of this article that at least gives us a small glimmer of hope is: "Mark Steven Johnson, would not be directing the sequel". Johnson is a complete hack. I still can't believe they let him do the first Ghost Rider after he put out his Daredevil abomination.

Disney is going to let Marvel do their thing. It would be poor business to tinker with products that have been popular for this many decades. They don't know the Marvel characters, so they will leave them in the hands of those with knowledge.

@yahzee: The Disney Marvel merger stated that Marvel Entertainment CEO Isaac Perlmutter would continue to call the shots while reporting everything directly to Disney. Marvel is owned by Disney, but it is still a separate entity.

Disney WON'T leave Marvel alone, they will screw everything up... and I want to see a proper Ghost Rider with Cage on board.

Emmytt is right, Disney is going to leave Marvel alone to do their thing. They need a good director for this movie, but I still think Cage is a good choice for the lead.

@insertusernamehere: I totally agree. Nic Cage excels at the obsessive screwball. Case in point: Leaving Las Vegas, Matchstick Men, Adaptation (one of my personal favorites), and most recently, Kick-Ass. Cage needs to drop the dumb, March action movies (with the exception of Kick-Ass, of course) and return to high quality material like the aforementioned films. Despite a rut of poor flicks -and I include Ghost Rider in that list- he is one of my favorite actors.

@123kid Agreed. After The Avengers, all Marvel Studios movies will be controlled through the Disney outlet. And then yes it will be goodbye Marvel movies.

its funny how all these studios want another crack at the marvel characters they own with reboots and sequels before the rights revert back to marvel studios...like its gonna help them

if they wanted to do it right, they shouldve done it the first time around....let marvel take back control of theyre characters and theyll give us the movies us fans deserve from these characters

fox, sony, columbia, etc...face it, u blew it :]

what's going to happen now after marvel going with disney is going to mess up all the marvel comic movies so after they get done it's like goodbye marvel movies.

Good, maybe David Goyer will write in Danny Ketch instead. If this film goes ahead without Cage then I will be stoked. The second Rider could have a chance to be in this. And Vengeance would be an awesome villain. Just call it Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. Boom. I'll take my check now.

This film has the potential if it kicks out Cage and doesn't revert to Disney. This is one character that Disney should never be allowed to touch. Ghost Rider and Punisher.

i liked the first one but felt it did come off cheesy but i blame the director for that, its his job along with the producers to deliver and DIRECT their actors, i think with a improved script and a better director the 2nd one could give the film a much better look and storyline.

Agreed Emmytt. Other studios just don't know how to use the full potential of the characters, nor do they have the Marvel universe in mind. Think of how many amazing crossover films and miniseries' could come from having every character held by one studio.

Best news I ve heard all day! Cage was certainly a bad choice since he acted like he didn't care for anything that happened to him which i guess he does in most all his films." I have a Demon in me........whatever" plus the finger pointing thing he did pissed me off. Seriously? do regualr people do that? Am I right people? Ok i bashed cage enough for one day LOL.
