Ghost Rider 2 rides forward
While that title may not end up beind the final title, De Luca did reveal that original Ghost Rider director Mark Steven Johnson will not be back to direct the sequel and Eva Mendes will not be back for the new film as well. David Goyer will be writing the film and it seems he could possibly direct the film as well. Goyer recently turned in an outline to the studio, and De Luca talked a bit about the story.
Sure. We have an outline that David wrote that kind of adapts his 2001 script into today's times with incorporating kind of an original idea of Nic's that Goyer thought added to the mix in good way-that we all thought added to the mix in a good way-that gets Ghost Rider into a bigger arena to kind of apply our story in. So Goyer has just delivered that outline to us in the studio and we're waiting to hear back and then we'll know if we can go to like that revised script. But since we're starting from something already written, it's been a pretty speedy process.
That idea that Nicolas Cage brought to the film, was to have it set in Europe, which De Luca also discussed.
Yeah, the idea was because Ghost Rider is a unique blend of theology and action and the character deals with the kind of battle of good vs. evil in a theological sense, that Europe you could avail yourself of a lot of religious sites and kind ancient religious site and a history of theology as a setting that isn't available in the U.S. We wanted to kind of signal that we're as different from the first movie just because we want to be fresh and new as you can get in terms of getting away from southwestern kind of pseudo-western thing.
To recap some of the facts...
- Mark Steven Johnson is not directing the sequel
- Eva Mendes will not return as Roxanne Simpson
- Ghost Rider 2 (or Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance) will be a hard PG-13
- The film is going to take place in Europe
- De Luca is open to David Goyer directing the sequel but it all comes down to his very busy schedule
- Says the sequel will be like "pushing the reset button" on the franchise
- As you might expect from the success of Avatar, Ghost Rider 2 might be done in 3D
- Says Goyer has just delivered his updated outline to the studio
- And says Ghost Rider 2 could easily be in front of the cameras this year
Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance comes to theaters February 17th, 2012 and stars Nicolas Cage, Violante Placido, CiarĂ¡n Hinds, Idris Elba, Johnny Whitworth, Fergus Riordan, Spencer Wilding, Sorin Tofan. The film is directed by Mark Neveldine, Brian Taylor.

I believe the Spirit of Vengeance in this sequel is Cage. He is going to fight 'my' creator, Mephistopheles.

Some good points, Fallen. Josh Holloway fits the Ketch look, not sure about his acting resume, though. I think I had this same conversation with JohnnyBlaze: The First Avenger a few months ago. Anyways, you're right: that picture from your last link DOES say it all. And I hope Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance will be a much darker film. Ghost Rider isn't kiddie-sh*t, it's dark and gritty and morbid.

why would they do this. the first one was a big upset and they should just completely reboot it if anything

I agree comrade. We should start a petition. :P
But anyways CBF nailed it. I am not the biggest GR fan but even I was disappointed in the flick.
If they we're to replace Cage or to even bring in Dan Ketch (which they won't), then I'd go with someone like Josh Holloway who fits the gritty look. another reason I say he's near perfect for Hawkeye, but if not there he fits well in this role too.

And I would love to see more emotion and story not just razzling effects and quick shot action scenes and corny lines. More heart and depth to the Ghost Rider character without being to babyish. I think this pic says it all:

I believe Cage is still fine with this, cos I enjoyed the first time he transforms into flames! They just going to have to put what describes most of the Rider to him this time like CBF's, since this one is completely new, maybe they'll throw some kiddo stuffs already. But it's hard to act so comics since this one is net to 13 audience. They should take TDK's example how and Avatar for the 3D.

So glad Goyer is changing it. I still wish Cage wasn't in it, but oh well, at least that horrible excuse for a director Mark Stephen Johnson won't be back. But I do dig the Europe idea. And I love that it will be a hard PG-13. I look forward to this with great anticipation. CBF, I would also love it if they worked in Ketch to take over the mantle.

I at least think that Blaze should somehow re-connect with his long lost brother, Daniel Ketch, and "pass the torch" so to speak. I mean I hated Nic Cage's stupid f*cking acting. Remember every time he pointed at Mephisto in the first one? Oh my god, I could kill somebody for the sh*ttiest acting I have ever seen. Not to mention Cage's involvement for ruining the character of Johnny Blaze. He put his hand in the SCRIPT and changed everything in there that made Blaze a badass, and changed those things into soft, jelly-beans-out-of-a-martini-glass-eating (in replacement of actually drinking), clean shaven clean cut pretty boy (instead of unshaven, long hair, cigar-smoking ruggedness), Journey-listening, Bugs Bunny-watching bullsh*t. He ruined John Blaze, and that is unforgivable. If Dan Ketch was handed the mantle, he would be a more accurate representation of the comics. Cuz that first movie was not Ghost Rider from the comics.

MSJ isn't back. My main point of happiness.
However our only eye candy from the first (Eve Mendes) won't be back as well... damn. And probably our fave hardass won't either (Sam Elliot). But I am still open to this. I am different about the Europe thing. I just don't see him there. I'd like a real gritty New York version better personally. But Vamps, Vatican idea is pretty damn awesome.
Overall, the main problem standing is Nic Cage. I have to agree with either comrades or inserts older posts by saying let him (Cage) direct , and have someone else take over, if he's such a huge fanboy, his vision of what a Ghost Rider flick should look like would be interesting to see. thats my two cents.

Marc Steven Johnson should not be back for anything. Ever. He should f*cking die.
Ghost Rider isn't Constantine...how many actual GR comics have these f*ckers read? This already sounds like it will be doomed to repeat the mistakes of the first one. Namely hiring Nic Cage.

I enjoyed the original a lot. It wasn't exactly true to the source material, sure, but it was still a fun flick. Glad to be getting some more updates on the sequel! While I'm sad to hear that Eva's not returning, I do like the new title, as well as the Europe idea. How awesome would it be to see Ghost Rider tearing it up at like the Vatican or something? lol.
