Get Your First Look at The Last Airbender!

Get your first look at Noah Ringer, 12, who is making his feature-film debut opposite Slumdog Millionaire's Dev Patel in M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender. For years, Ringer has gone by the nickname "Avatar" because he looked so much like the lead in the Nickelodeon cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender. Check out the first two images care of USA Today below.

Noah Ringer as Aang
Dev Patel as Zuko

Ringer didn't need to alter much to play Aang, who uses martial arts to manipulate the weather. Like Aang, Ringer keeps his head shaved and is an expert in martial arts. "It keeps me cool when I'm doing tae kwon do," says Ringer, a Texas native with a black belt who landed the role after sending a homemade DVD of him practicing the sport. "It's so cool to get the part."

Patel, too, seems suited for the film, the first of a planned trilogy. He earned his black belt in tae kwon do before he turned to acting and discovered the television show while filming Millionaire. "I started watching it in my trailer in India," says Patel, who plays the villain Zuko, a "firebender" (he manipulates flames). "I see why the fan base is so big. It's got action but a lot of moral messages."

The live-action feature opens July 2, 2010.

The Last Airbender was released July 1st, 2010 and stars Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel, Cliff Curtis, Nicola Peltz, Randall Duk Kim, Jessica Andres, Noah Ringer, Seychelle Gabriel. The film is directed by M. Night Shyamalan.

    A step down for Dev Patel it seems. And Shyamalan? Why oh why oh why? A trilogy???? One would be alright, but your films are so unique in story. Why cut the trend? Granted I've yet to see "The Happening" but still...Oh well, at least he's doing what he wants to do.

    Ah. I see what you mean now. It sounded like you were trying to compare this to DBE, which I've discussed MANY times on other forums. Thanks for that clarification.

    @predator_skull_rip

    If you think this is Nick's worst show, that's fine. I respect your opinion. However, your statement suggests that Avatar is even WORSE than AHHHHH: Real Monsters, Cat-Dog, or The Mighty B. Sorry but, I felt my IQ slipping out of my brain after watching those. At least Avatar has moral lessons and a purpose, a rare thing for children's programing these days, and it's not A.D.D inducing.

    @J.A.Ottley.Writer / Director

    Hyped is an understatement. I haven't followed a film this closely since LOTR, and I was more skeptical about Peter Jackson handing that because his previous work was pure crap. I'm not worried about M. Night handling this at all.

    @Lone Wolf

    Patel's scar is on his left side, and, from this pic, you can't see his left side very well. Don't worry. It looks awesome. I've seen it. I will miss the ponytail, but, look at the FIRE!!! FIRE!!!

    Film event of Summer 2010. Believe it!

    DBE sucked because of its cast and crew. Also it was more noticeable that DBZ is popular within the fan base of the DB franchise, that is why DBE sucked, because it wasn't DBZ it was based on DB, which people remember all the characters from DBZ, like Vegeta, Trunks etc etc.

    I'm on verge of creating my own DBZ story, may turn it into a if its good enough. i got the story planned out its just what goes in the story, plus i have to think of sequel plans for it, since the end is left open loool, no i ain't doing it deliberately for a sequel option, its the way i created the story.

    Also note what Diagma (sorry if its a typo dude) with a cast & crew attached to TLA, this is sure to be a success, DBE just had a bunch of amateurs attached to it that all though of one failing goal, let turn one of the greatest pieces of Manga/anime in to a film and hope for a success, because Transformers did it right?

    Good point Diagama, I can't compare this to DBE because it is M. Night Shamylan. Those jackoffs who made DBE had no idea what they were doing and if you ask me these pics are not half bad. And LMAO Tyler with the Bullseye comment.

    -There aren't a lot of similaries between DBE and TLA but the point I was trying to make was that, I saw pics from DBE and was immediatley turned off. I see pics for this and I'm expected.

    A pictures is worth a million words. and these two are tellin me the right thing. This film is going to rock and is being handled with care, unlike DBE. DBE looks like two novices planned everything.

    Why are people trying to compare this to Dragonball? I don't see the connection. People. Go to IMBD, look up the Production crews for both The Last Airbender and Dragonball, compare, and then say that again with a straight face.

    The people behind Dragonball just worked on TV and crappy sequels.

    The people behind The Last Airbender have worked on Harry Potter, Transformers, LOTR, Pirates, The Dark Kight, etc.

    The difference is VAST! Summer event of 2010! Believe it!

  22. Lone Wolf

    Ok, I LOVE the tv series, one of my all time favorites,but I can tell that M. Night is most likely going to butcher it for me. I'll still see it in theaters, but I'm not going with any high expectations until I see a promising trailer.
    And not to be racist or to offend anyone, but why is "Zuko" Indian? And where is his scar? And what is up with the new look for "Aang"'s tatoo?
    And PLEASE don't put one of those "what a twist!" endings in this.

    Looks to me like he's done a damn good job. They look just like they did in the show, and more realistic, which is what any movie adaptation should do. And I love the way they did Aang's tattoo. That looks freakin' awesome. I'm sure Shyamalan will do a good job on this. :-)

  26. Solar XI

    I have been a fan of M. Night Shyamalan's since Unbreakable (at this point I hadn't seen The Sixth Sense). He's one of my favorite directors, partly because it's original and contains a lot of thrills.

    Avatar: The Last Airbender isn't that great of show. Yes, I watch cartoons (creativity is the key). Since M. Night Shyamalan is directing, I'll watch but not expecting anything better than Dragonball Evolution.

    Dev Patel, honestly I know nothing of him except that he was in Slumdog Millionaire. I didn't see that though so I can't judge his acting, yet...

    Of late, M. Night's greatest twist has been making me believe that his newest films will amaze; they have not.

    Though I know nothing of this series, here's to hoping it works well for M. I'm also particularly interested to see how Shyamalan crafts his first adaptation, after being strictly "original."

    Great set, too...
