Gerard Butler Bows Out of Escape from New York

Gerard Butler has bowed out of Escape From New York, the remake of the John Carpenter film, according to Variety.

Right after his turn as the Spartan in 300, Butler made a deal to play Snake Plissken in a film bought by New Line. He left for creative differences.

New Line has brought Jonathan Mostow in to rewrite, with an option to direct.

Escape From New York was released July 10th, 1981 and stars Kurt Russell, Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, Donald Pleasence, Isaac Hayes, Season Hubley, Harry Dean Stanton, Adrienne Barbeau. The film is directed by John Carpenter.

Escape from New York is in development . The film is directed by Breck Eisner.

    you can't fix what is not broken,leave it alone. you can never replace kurt as snake or any of them like hawk,brain,the duke or even the late Donald Plesance as the president. not to mention maggie. just re-release if you want nothing more

    I agree with remastering the original and adding a few scenes. They should make the scene where the crazies come out longer and scarier with a look a like actor. The action could be quick and inserted to match the Russell footage. They could CG the outside of the WTC on street level to make it look like it should. And fix the fight scene by making it inside MSG just drop the riginal footage into a all CG background with tons more people, and make the fight longer as well via digital doubles. Man if they do this and re-release it in theaters this would be the greatest thing that they could do for "Snake" and his fans. This is a classic film and just needs a little tweak here and there. Nuff Said

    *Dances for Joy* YEEEESSS!! Someone in Hollywood finally got brains, "Escape From New York" doesn't need to to be re-made, just clean up the orginial print and Re-Release it in theaters! Gerard Butler thank you for leaving the Re-make!! 1st John Crapenters's "Halloween" was trashed, we don't need another great cult classic film trashed!!
