George Lucas has been buying up the rights to old movies for his collage project
Talking with the UK's Daily Mail, Smith had this to say:
"He's been buying up the film rights to dead movie stars in the hope of using computer trickery to put them all together in a movie, so you'd have Orson Welles and Barbara Stanwyck appear alongside today's stars."
Mel Smith is reportedly too busy to help George with this new venture. There were no further story details, and there is no official statement from Lucasfilm about this project yet.

That'd be cool though to see a flick like "Casino Royale" (1967) again which united David Niven, Peter Sellers, Orson Wells, Woody Allen, David Prowse, and Ursula Andress for a 137 minute spy spoof. Hilarious. Imagine if such an idea was up Lucas' sleeve?
And for those who haven't seen it, you should check out "Radioland Murders." Very '20s/'30s in tone & style

I read the interview in full with Mel Smith and to be honest, it was very bitter, name calling and frankly there could have been some BS slipped in there. I wouldn't put this past Lucas though - seeing how he enjoys f*cking all that is sacred.

Sounds interesting, at least its not SW. On a different note: He needs to return to Willow with Ron Howard, thirty years later sort of deal
It seems to me he only wants to stick with SW and Indy Jones, I want another Howard the Duck and another Willow film. I know I sound like a geek

I've done a bit of research on this. Lucas has actually plowed his vast fortunes into perfecting Carbonite and actually plans on bringing these dead celebs back to life for real and under a minimum 6 movie contract. The blindness should pass in time for them to read scripts.

I'm calling shenanigans on this story. Is it April Fools day already?

My first thought was Steve Martin's Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, which worked well because it was a comedy. Not sure if CGI is quite up to this yet. I think I must be one of the few who remains unconvinced by the CGI'd Jeff Bridges in the Tron Legacy trailers. Still looks CGI to me.

@incmob the first thing that came to my mind was Forest Gump as well. The concept is not a new one but this may take it to a whole other level. If that is a good thing or not is yet to be seen.

This COULD be awesome. But then again, it COULD be terrible. I'm not placing any bets, but I'm interested. Although this sounds like one of those projects that ultimately gets shelved or tossed into developmental hell.

I agree that i think george has finally either 1) gone completely nutz 2) does some drunk calling late at night with ideas to buddies 3) is secretely one of the most gifted and fantastic film makers, and it is an illusion to all others....
well i am sure it is none of the above, however... i think this could be an intriguing idea. After all, i thought it was used well, and for the time and even still today looked great in forest gump, so who knows it might work, if someone else directs it that is.

This could either be a total fail or totally fascinating. There really is no in between.

This clearly shows that the people in Hollywood are running out of ideas. This is just beyond stupid.

Agree @Insert. Strange indeed. This coupled with John Cena in talks to be the next Batman posted earlier today.

Well CGI has come a long way. They made Jeff Bridges look younger for "Tron: Legacy," and people believed that a CGI Joker was possible. So...

So how far the mighty has fallen that they go to a idea to use the film of dead actors for nothing more then to make a movie for money reasons. Yes only money reasons. We all might wonder what a movie with some of the long forgotten passed actors with some moderen day ones might look like. But this is sad.... Real sad..... Lucas needs to go back to what he douse the best. Sci-fy movies and fantasy....
