George Lucas Set to Retire After Red Tails

George Lucas to retire after Red Tails
After Howard the Duck and Radioland Murders, you'd have thought George Lucas would have thrown in the towel by now. But no, he trudged forward to make three of the most derided films in history with Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones, and Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. Even with all the negativity and hatred aimed at his head, he continued to move forward, producing and co-directing Red Tails. Which has not yet been screened for critics.

It is Red Tails that has done the man in. As the film prepares for its release this weekend to little fanfare, the director has decided to call it quits. Yes, George Lucas has announced that he is retiring. And that's one way to get some focus on this historically important film.

This is what he had to say.

"I'm retiring. I'm moving away from the business, from the company, from all this kind of stuff."

It took George Lucas twenty years or more to get Red Tails off the ground. And he is disappointed in the lack of interest in it, now that its set to open on Friday. According to him, he couldn't even get certain studio executives to screen the film.

"Isn't this their job? Isn't their job at least to see movies? It's not like some Sundance kid coming in there and saying, 'I've got this little movie - would you see it?' If Steven Spielberg or I or James Cameron or Robert Zemeckis comes in there, and they say, 'We don't even want to bother to see it. . . "

His longtime producer of more than twenty years Rick McCallum then went on to give this rather sad eulogy.

"Once this is finished, he's done everything he's ever wanted to do. He will have completed his task as a man and a filmmaker."

Completed his task as a filmmaker? And a man? Jesus. How bad is Red Tails? Maybe stop with the bad CGI, but don't give up being a man, George Lucas! I'm sure there is a delicious calzone that needs to be eaten out there somewhere.

Quite honestly, I don't think anyone every finishes their task as a "man". This is just sad. George? My dad is going to fucking love Red Tails just for the solid hour of aerial dogfights alone. If at least one man loves it, it can't be all bad...

Right?

Red Tails was released January 20th, 2012 and stars Bryan Cranston, Cuba Gooding Jr., Terrence Howard, Daniela Ruah, Michael B. Jordan, Aml Ameen, Tristan Wilds, Ne-Yo. The film is directed by Anthony Hemingway.

Maybe now he'll allow the Star Wars franchise to be pried from his overly possessive fingers and let other, more talented young sci-fi filmmakers take a crack at what could have been a much, much better series.

@Joshua-A-Tecumseh What? I don't understand you. Something is obviously affecting the way you type. Are you drunk, because you're clearly off-balance. All I said is that Lucas isn't dead, followed by telling @ROFLitschristian what your game is. I know, I know, there's nothing, absolutely nothing I can do to you, because you're rich, and cool and awesome (much sarcasm intended). I wish I was just like you, except I can't be because, well lets just say you're lacking a few things, such as intelligence et al. But you go right ahead and insult me, but remember that there's nothing, absolutely nothing you have to hurt me with (I love that moment in TDK as well). Have fun trolling ;)

Really? I don't think he's looking at the big picture. I think he still has the ability - some where from within him - to make great movies. This is not only a horrible choice, but it's a bad misstep considering that this will be known as his "farewell" film. It's going to be average, at best. Really sad...

@Joshua-A-Tecumseh Since you're new here, I'll fill you in on something: this is Movieweb, where we comment on movie news. It's my opinion about Lucas. Your opinion about me is what we call trolling, and we don't really accept trolls here. Focus on the news, not me.

LFL and its subsidiaries don't have--and have not had--Lucas supervising them solely for almost 30yrs now. Once the companies became legit, he got a crew of guys to run them for him. He was more involved with royalties, Star Wars related material, and site expansion at the company, which is supposedly going through with a digital film studio soon. Now that Lucas may or may not be out of the chair, the Star Wars saga could receive some much needed love and respect that it's not been getting. So many things could've been done with that franchise over the past 30yrs, and to date not much has come out of it besides the prequels and two Clone Wars series. Sure there's comics and hundreds of spin off books, but nothing really concrete that everyone's gonna remember for years on end.

In the End Lucas was a very good director and original. I never knew why he recieved so much hate. Only real reason I can see is the fan boys can never live down the newest trilogy. Either way I got a lot of respect for him just off the Original trilogy.

And seeing as how unoriginal Hollywood is these days, no one should ever cheer at the retirement of a great director. We need more lucas's these days. And less remakes.
