Gears of War will be shopped around to other studios
Stuart Beattie was the most recent screenwriter to work on the script, with Chris Morgan (The Fast and the Furious 6) and Billy Ray (The Hunger Games) also turning in screenplay drafts. Creative Artists Agency will spearhead the discussions with potential suitors, working from Stuart Beattie's script. Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen (The Twilight Saga) were previously attached as producers.
The Gears of War game launched in 2006, a third-person shooter centering on Delta Squad soldiers trying to fend off the Locust Horde, an evil species of creatures that emerged from the Earth's surface.
Gears of War is in development .

@youngrizo Crap... I really wish they would capitalize on that film... seriously... It has a great story, opening for great casting, and the visuals would be sick! Sony really needs to get on this project...

@youngrizo The video game I really think they need to tackle would be inFamous... It is a lot more obtainable and would be the type of film to attract a larger crowd... but maybe that is just me

I would love to make a five minute film of this, the team would have to be body builders to fit the parts.

Gears of War is set in a universe that would make a great fantasy war epic but for some reason at the same time it's aesthetic does not translate well enough. The way those characters were built and the armor they were still require a very ridiculously high need to suspend disbelief to be taken seriously. But the right artists could definitely do it.
I've always felt the one game that could truly do well as a movie franchise was Halo, it has a giant Universe, humanity and the cool spartan aspect, And Battleship proved humanoid looking aliens with armor could look cool so I don't know.
It's the Transformers theory, how ridiculous can something be and how much change would you have to make to make it relatable and something more people than the hardcore crowd would care for and how much would it cost to make... also part of the problem is a lot of these games are very violent and the violence is important to show how bad the universe they are set in, usually is.. Hollywood hangs on to PG13 for dear life...

Why bother going on board with something if you're just gonna leave the project later? It's always the same thing with video game adaptions. The director goes on board then later leaves. WHY EVEN BOTHER DAMMIT!!

@skywise: As I said to @ejk1 the only way that a truly good video game film will be made instead of the bad to terrible ones we've gotten so far is if studio's take them seriously. That means making them not only for video game geeks, but for the general audience. Also instead of hiring second to third string director and writers they need to get a big named director along with big named actors instead of the B and C level actors they hire now. Lastly the budget. Studios need to take a risk and put the investment in to the budget. Oh also they need to chose games that will translate into film better. If studio's did that I think we could get a really good video game films.
I think Metal Gear Solid and Uncharted could ms those films if studios did what I said above.

@huntsman Also, one of the things that made the game great was the fact that it asks you to make some hard decisions with dire consequences. There is no way that could translate to film because in the game you are the one responsable for the outcome.

@huntsman I agree, I lvoed Mas Effect so much. I just dont see a studio understanding what held it all together. I think they know they have abuilt in audience they are looking at the $$$ signs. I dont want a movie based on ME. the games are superior. There is no way a stuio could come close.

@skywise: Mass Effect simply wouldn't work as a movie. First a studio would have to take it seriously, which they don't now. That means getting an A quality directors and writers which they don't now. Also they would need A grade actors not the B and C level actors they get now. Then there the budget that would have to go into Mass Effect which would be astronomical, and I don't see that happening.

@skywise Yeah, I feel with games they can get away with more story. But I've never been a big campaign in movies kinda guy. Following the story in games doesn't do it for me.

@crypt Mass Effect series is one of the deepest and most emotional games I have ever played. They are talking about making a film and I just dont feel to good about that. Mas Effect is brilliant as is.

@skywise Same here; I want to know why they turn out horrid. I enjoy the Res Evil movies; but only as movies. As Adaptations of the games, they suck ass. I mean, I honestly enjoyed Hitman and Max Payne, I must admit. But i did not play the games.
I have not played Mass Effect, but hear wonderful things, as you supported

@crypt It is unfortunate that games dont translate well to film. there have been some decent ones. I enjoyed Silent Hill quite a bit. It was not only filmed very artistic but it stayed true to the atmosphere of the game. If only Res Evil could have done that. Res Evil is one of my favorite series of all time so the disapointment was immense.
Of course There is really no comparing Christophe Gans to Pual W.S. Anderson.
But I agree 100%, video game movies generaly suck.
I think that video games are pretty much movies that you are in control of and studios just see doller signs. Sacraficing the control of a game leaves you with a bad movie.
For instance the MAss Effect series is among the greatest story I have ever encountered and I believe that most of that has to do with the fact that you are in control of the outcome.
FPS's and fighting games tend to make the worst movies IMO.
Its really hard for me to pinpoint exactly why the studios just cant make deent game to movie adaptions.

@ejk1: I wouldn't call the first Mortal Kombat a good video game film just because it made a good profit. That's like saying the Resident Evil franchise are masterpieces. The reason why it was so successful wasn't because it was a really good it was because it came out at the height of Mortal Kombat's popularity which led to all the video game nerds like me rushing to see it.
The problem I think video game films have is that studio's don't take them seriously or their fans. They only go half heartily into making them. Trying to make them as cheap as possible with second or third tier directors and writers along with B and C level actors. The only way there will be a truly video game film is if a studio takes the video game seriously and try not to only cater to video game players. I think a Metal Gear Solid film could be really good if done right along with Uncharted. They could make it into the next Indiana Jones type franchise. Sadly I don't see any studio taking video game inspired films seriously as long as people keep paying for bad ones like Resident Evil.

@ejk1 I don't think it is necessary videogames making bad movies. More as bad scripts based on video games make bad movies. But I think studio's may have the point of view they are bad because they do poorly. As entertainment, through a 14 year old's eyes, Street Fighter was visual good, outside of the bad Blanka make-up. But imagine Street Fighter with a better story like MK. It could have been like Blood Sport, where a secret underground world of fighting was going on, but build up with a story of revenge, honor, and greed. Then that movie would have been great.

Mortal Kombat is the exception to the rule that video games make bad films. However, keep in mind that the MK film was able to create a story, not follow a plot that was found in game, so perhaps it isn't as much an exception as previously thought.
