Gary Oldman to Join Cast of Iron Man?
Speculations about Oldman's role seem to be focused on the possibility of him playing Howard Stark, father to Robert Downey Jr's Tony Stark. Early reports about the script for Iron Man 2 suggested that there were major flashback scenes in the film which set up future Marvel franchise films, and at one point it was suggested that Tim Robbins might be taking on that role. With Robbins recently denying that rumor, perhaps Favreau and Marvel offered the part of Iron Man's dad to Oldman.
It is also worth noting that this may affect Oldman's future with Warner Brothers. Oldman currently has pivotal roles in two of Warner Brother's major franchises, with his role as Commissioner Gordon in the Batman movies, and his role as Sirius Black in the Harry Potter films. The last time we had an actor depart from one studio and it's superhero franchise to appear in a superhero movie made by another studio, it was James Marsden, who left Fox's X-Men: The Last Stand to appear in Superman Returns - and consequently, Marsden's Cyclops was killed early on in the film. While it seems unlikely that Warner Brothers would kill off Commissioner Gordon in the next Batman film, it wouldn't be a surprise to see some sort of tension between the actor and the studio.
In other Iron Man 2 news, IESB has confirmed that Garry Shandling's role in the film will actually be that of Senator Stern. Earlier reports were vague on what role Shandling had, saying only that he was either a reporter or a Senator.
Iron Man 2, directed by Jon Favreau, will continue the tale of Tony Stark and his armored alter-ego as he continues his transformation from billionaire industrialist to super-hero. Robert Downey, Jr. will star as Tony Stark, with Gwynety Paltrow returning in the role of his assistant Pepper Potts. Don Cheadle, Mickey Rourke, Sam Rockwell, Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson also star. Iron Man 2 blasts into theatres May 7, 2010.
Iron Man 2 was released May 7th, 2010 and stars Robert Downey Jr., Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sam Rockwell, Mickey Rourke, Samuel L. Jackson, Clark Gregg. The film is directed by Jon Favreau.

Maybe he's working as a spy for WB and wants to sabotage the set...or maybe he's in the movie, who knows. Is it really necessary, though? Oldman's great, but there's other veteran actors who could play Stark's father that wouldn't interfere with any Bat-flicks

@slysnide You'll see Gary Oldman again in the HP franchise. He reappears in Book 7 so you'll get at the very least a cameo of him in one of the Deathly Hallows films.

His character of Sirius Black was killed off in film 5 of the Harry Potter series, as was in the books, so he's done with that poject. Whoever wrote this needs to edit since Gary's no longer 'currently' in the HP franchise.
On a second note, Oldman supposedly expressed distaste for returning to play Gordon in "The Dark Knight" and tried to get out of it, but couldn't due to his contract...or so says the story about Riddler in Batman 3 that's under the most commented story section.

Oldman is great, but I don't think he ought to crossover (especially to be Stark's dad). I think he ought to stay on as Commissioner Gordon. That's too close of a crossover for me. Besides, Oldman was already trying to get out of Batman prior to TDK, why would he try to enter another major comic franchise?! Stick in Gotham, Commissioner.
