We reported yesterday that Warner Bros. was planning on delaying their upcoming crime drama Gangster Squad due to the recent tragedy in Aurora, Colorado during the The Dark Knight Rises premiere. Today, the studio confirmed they will delay the gangster movie, with January 11th 2013 being eyed as a possible release date.

The studio is planning on re-shooting a scene where theater goers try to escape the gunfire coming from behind a movie screen, in response to the Aurora, Colorado theater shooting that left 12 dead.

They are currently looking into several factors, including how quickly the cast can come back together for the re-shoot, and what other competing movies they may face at the box office. The only other project on the slate for January 11, 2013 is Paramount's Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton.

Gangster Squad was released January 11th, 2013 and stars Sean Penn, Holt McCallany, Wade Williams, James H├ębert, Ambyr Childers, Josh Brolin, Mick Betancourt, Mac Brandt. The film is directed by Ruben Fleischer.

@narrator Agreed. It's definitely a terrible strategy marketing-wise. And it's just too fast a decision; WB wants to change it now because it happened less than a week ago and it's too fresh. But if this movie were to come out a year from now, nobody would really mind.

It's completely silly that we now have to modify/censor/re-cut movies because of what demented people do. It's like not having a bank robbery movie because someone was killed at a bank robbery.

I agree with @robert McDougal, I work in NYC and 9/12/01 i went back to work to show these *ssholes that i am not going to be affected by the terror they tried to put on me., Change the shot if you like but if that is the case just take it out. People from Aurora are not going to see this movie anyway cause they might think there a a movie theater sceen in the movie anyway

At least put it to October/November this year.

That far? They really want to risk this move being placed in the doldrums equivalent of the movie going season? A huge risk, especially seeing as most current fans would have lost interest by then, and the fact that the film itself is risky to market seriously... it just looks silly. Bad ass, but silly, and that's not a good type of film to release come January.

Ugh, they should make their movie the way it was intended. Letting the joker ruin every movie just puts a smile on his face.
