G.I. Joe Retaliation pushed to March 2013 for 3D conversion
Paramount has made the surprising move to push G.I. Joe Retaliation, one of its upcoming summer tentpole movies, from June 29 to March 29, 2013 to allow time for a 3D post-production conversion.

The action sequel is now going up against Summit's Stephenie Meyer adaptation The Host, and Tyler Perry's The Marriage Counselor. Here's what an unnamed Paramount executive had to say about the release date shift.

"We're going to do a conscientious 3D job because we've seen how it can better box office internationally. Jim Cameron did all of Titanic's 3D in post - and look how well that movie turned out."

The month of March is now being considered as a viable option to release big-budget fare, after the box office success of The Hunger Games, which has taken in $636 million worldwide to date. If the sequel would have stayed in its June 29, 2012 release slot, it would have been going up against Warner Bros.' Magic Mike, Disney's People Like Us, and Lionsgate's Tyler Perry's Madea's Witness Protection.

G.I. Joe Retaliation was released March 28th, 2013 and stars Dwayne Johnson, Jonathan Pryce, Byung-hun Lee, Elodie Yung, Ray Stevenson, D.J. Cotrona, Adrianne Palicki, Channing Tatum. The film is directed by Jon M. Chu.

3D conversion? why makes no sense come on, the ads were great, this reminds me back in the 90&#180s all the comic books special edition with their holofoilstamped covers.
This really sucks now I got to wait till next year for it, bet you is not going to be the same.

@narrator Lol that's what I was thinking, at least HAVE THE DECENCY to make up another excuse! But no, they just went ahead and said "All we care about is the f*cking money, bitches"

  3. felipe-11

@dark-env EXACTLY! WHAT THE HELL!? This has to be the worst move EVER. They'll probably end up spending more money on re-advertising the film till next year, than whatever extra money they'll make from 3D.

And it would've been different if they converted this before and released it in 3D this year, but no one cares enough about G.I. Joe enough to wait a full year JUST TO SEE IT IN 3D!

It worked on Titanic because it's a f*cking 11-Oscar-winning-classic, it's not gonna work for this!

I like how they at least don't even try to cover up their intentions with some half-ass comment about improving the films quality or making the picture more enjoyable. Nope, they just basically say they want more money. Too bad they didn't have the courage to release the "executives" name.

Honestly, I wonder how many people are going to lose their jobs over this mess. I mean, that's millions of dollars down the drain and it has to be taken out of someone's pocket.

Why is this happening they released the trailer for the movie already and its had appearde on many movies that are already on dvd so why change the release date just becasue they want to have a 3D version of the film , Holllywood needs to relized that most of us hate 3D its a piece of crap and all they are doing is wasting their time and is going to cost them more money , Was waiting 2 years to see this and now I have to wait nonther year , F this Paramount Pictures You Suck Big Time Bad Move This time EPIC FAIL

  15. Yannick Decorte

It makes you wonder how bad the tracking must have been for Paramount to think it would be worth it to write off all that promotion as a loss since it would have been pointless, spend a ton of money in a lengthy 3D conversion and have to relaunch a new marketing campaign next year for a weaker release date? I love the comparison with Titanic's 3D. GI Joe Retaliation is more like Wtath of the Titans than Titanic; whatever money they're going to make with 3D will be offset by having less people going to see it.

I was thinking the marketing had been surprisingly pretty good so far, so this is a spectacular failure of a decision. A month before the release of a summer tentpole! I don't even know if that has ever happened before.

This is bad news but I cant say Im surprised. Ever since they hired John Chu it was almost a guarantee this movie would not be good. The 3D conversion excuse is a smoke screen. It does not take a full year to convert a movie to 3D. I bet they are using this time for reshoots and/or trying to figure out how this movie can be better.

This is such a bonehead move by Paramount, honestly if the film turns out to be pretty good I think it could've gotten $200+ million this summer (domestically), now that it's being delayed to March of next year I honestly think it'll make less. There are exceptions in March but considering this will be going up against The Host I don't think this will be pulling as big of numbers as it could

@corey your right I just read up on it. It will be flocked with Twihards for sure. Damn why can't Stephenie Meyer just go away?? But with this coming out same day as The Host, Joe has no chance in hell of winning its weekend here. Might as well go straight to blu ray

This is really a bad move.
Gi joe is not meant for 3d, not even close.
You'll be suprised how packed avengers was when i went to see it and i saw it in 2d. Very lil people go for 3d, families dont spend money taking their kids to watch anything in 3d.
But if this is how they want it then blah... when it comes out next year lets all go see it in 2d, not 3d. , serioually lets make a pack starting right now, leave those 3d theaters seats empty so they can understand how wasted money that is in this lifetime.

    12 months agoby @jasonkatFlag

  31. Dark enV

This has to be a joke. It's only a month before release, the advertising has been all over the place, all the trailers are out, there's no possible reason to do this, the 3D isn't going to get you anything!!! Screw 3D, it's an unnecessary add-on that has only really worked with one live action film and that's Avatar and it was designed for it, this has NO NEED FOR 3D!

    12 months agoby @dark-envFlag

  32. JasonKat

And you know what else? the gi joe tots are expected to hit shelfs next week. which would have been 1 month away from its movie release. 39. TheDude1

@superman81 They believe the 3D will help the movie(overseas it will) however here in North America it will kill its box office numbers. Not to mention the many many millions they have to spend to push the release til next year since they waited so very late to make this decision.

But my guess is that they will cave to the criticism and just release the movie in September.

On one side there is Snow White and the Huntsman, Prometheus and Brave... and on the other side there is Spiderman and Batman... or at least there was.

They were sandwiched in a tough spot and after how poorly Battleship is tracking so far, they don't want to be next on the flop board. But they will make the excuse that they did it cause of the 3D conversion.

They didn't look at Jim Cameron's Titanic 3D- they looked at "The Avengers" and how that movie accomplished a million dollar box office record within few weeks. Now they think of converting it to 3D and to earn like 800-900 million dollars, instead of 500-600 milllion dollars. 15-20 dollars for a 3D movie ticket is bullsh*t!

    12 months agoby @spackFlag
