'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' Delayed Because It Can't Compete with 'The Amazing Spider-Man'

While 3D conversion was the stated reason for delay, they may also shoot more scenes with Channing Tatum.
The Reason Behind G.I. Joe: Retaliation's Delay
The Reason Behind G.I. Joe: Retaliation's Delay
Last week we reported that G.I. Joe Retaliation was being pushed back to allow time for a 3D post-production conversion. Now, Paramount Pictures is stating that they actually decided to sit this summer season out after watching competing movies come up with losses. They felt that G.I. Joe Retaliation was likely to get lost in the shuffle.

A producer from the film explains the film's delay.

"They looked at the landscape and realized they couldn't compete."

Studio chair Brad Grey and vice chair Rob Moore felt the expenses due to the delay were preferable to any possible competition with The Amazing Spider-Man.

They are also planning on adding depth to Channing Tatum's role, who was not a star when the original was made. The actor's character originally dies in this sequel, but it's now possible that his life will be spared.

Stay tuned for more news revolving G.I. Joe Retaliation.

G.I. Joe Retaliation was released March 28th, 2013 and stars Dwayne Johnson, Jonathan Pryce, Byung-hun Lee, Elodie Yung, Ray Stevenson, D.J. Cotrona, Adrianne Palicki, Channing Tatum. The film is directed by Jon M. Chu.

"The actor's character originally dies in this sequel..." Stupid storyline. Abandon it. Hate when a sequel kills off all characters or recasts. No explanation can justify such a bad move by the studio. "...but it's now possible that his life will be spared." Well I guess, if it 'doesn't' happen, you just let out a huge spoiler, lol.

They need to make up their minds when it comes to why this movie is being delayed a whole year...First its to covert it to 3D...then it was they wanted to try and get back JGL and not kill Duke afterall cuz Tatum and JGL are becoming better known actors now a days and to do reshoots...Now its cuz they thought they wouldn't be able to compete with the other big films coming out this summer...i wonder whats gonna come up next as to the reason of the delay

I guess they saw a better chance of competing with Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Man of Steel and whatever else is coming to theaters in 2013

@ i am going to have to disagree. yes the GI joe 2 trailer was good, but i am almost afraid that they have put in all the good parts in the trailer like they did for the first film. at least with spidey, with every trailer comes new scenes that make it even more exciting and fresh.

@TheDude1How much you think The Amazing Spiderman will gross in its overall domestic run on a scale of $200-$300?

    2 years agoby @cheetoboyFlag

  14. TheDude1

This is a line of BS for sure. Sure Spider Man is going to be big but not that big. It was tracking around 70 million dollars opening weekend. GI Joe could have made about 40 to 50 million opening weekend and a nice 120 million or so domestically total and maybe double that overseas for some profit. Now it won't do any of that after pissing off the fans.

Wouldn't the chemistry between The Rock and Bruce Willis have been enough? I swear if they take out any of Willis' scenes to add Tatum I'll be pissed.

In all honesty they should have kept it at June 29th. GI Joe would have most likely took the weekend (unless People Like Us drew in a lot couples). TASM coming out on a Tuesday is a little awkward. They should have waited for July 6th, that way there G.I. Joe could have a week to make good enough cash for it not to be a MAJOR flop. Oh well, July 3 is my birthday so TASM coming out that day is nothing to complain about haha

@dan1 You're right. I want the movie to just release now too. It looked ready to go and actually pretty awesome. I like Tatum though, especially after 21 Jump Street, so it would've been upsetting to see the main character from the first film killed off. I guess I look at this in a good light and bad.

Your right@Rome84, not every film should be made for 3-D. As soon as Avatar became the mega success it was hollywood started jumping the band wagon big time, but Avatar was made with special enhanced 3-D technology that no one had seen before, that's why it became the mega hit it was, but when it comes to regular movies they just simply revised them. There were such things as movies being box office hits before 3-D, it seems as though most major studios have forgotten that, there only going to kill the industry with ridiculously high ticket prices for 3-D, or maybe they should find a way for it to be cheaper. But maybe when The Dark Knight Rises which isn't 3-D by the way, comes out and dominates the world, maybee that could be a wake up call to the industry that a movie doesn't half to be in 3-D, as long as its a very f***ing good movie.

    2 years agoby @cheetoboyFlag

  27. Replicant

@rome84@dan1@Zack-Johnson and everyone else who is saying the should have pushed the movie back only till August; a decent 3D conversion is a process that takes at least about a year. They could've pushed it back till later this year if they kept the movie the same, but if they want to make more money by making it in 3D they need to take the time to convert it.

@renodc Good observation about the US box office. US audiences are getting to a point were they only care about a movie (at least an action movie) if it's already part of a major franchise. You'd think G.I. Joe would be enough but I guess the studio just wants to play it ultra safe. The same thing is happening to videogames; fewer new titles are being released because they can't compete with major sequels like Call Of Duty, etc.

Luckily the rest of the world hasn't fallen to that level, yet at least.

  35. Dan

@superman81 He's better than Tatum, I'll give you that, but that's hardly saying anything at all. Like I said, this "relationship" angle will be junk, as will the tacked on 3D.

    2 years agoby @dan1Flag

  36. Superman81

@dan1 what movie has the rock starred in that was a flop? He actually makes GI Joe look 100 times better, that and them fixing Cobra Commander. He made Fast Five even better as well. He has a lot more studios and people lining up to make movies and see him act than Channing Tatum. He isn't the best actor but he isn't bad either.

    2 years agoby @superman81Flag

  37. Dan

@corey The Rock is not a very good actor, either. So it's still ridiculous to me. Any relationship they decide to write into the story between those two will be hokey at best, atrocious at worst. They really should just release what they have right now. In 2D. With less Tatum.

    2 years agoby @dan1Flag

  38. Superman81

Canning Tatum isn't a box office draw, he is a sh*tty actor. If bubble gum chewing, spit drooling, girls didn't think he was Gods gift to women then his movies wouldn't make jack. Magic Mike is going to be a joke and so was 21 Jump Street. They should have killed Duke , fired Tatum, and brought back Duke in the third movie with a different and better actor. No it can't compete with Spider Man don't delay a movie 9 months so you can reshoot and screw up a movie because you wanna keep the worst actor you got on set.

    2 years agoby @superman81Flag

  39. Bawnian©-Dexeus

They could just release a 3D version only overseas, if they think that's where the money is. Give us the normal version now, and have foreigners wait longer.

  40. Corey W.

"Also Channing Tatum had a breakout spring, starring in The Vow and 21 Jump Street. In our first screening of the film the reaction from audiences was good but with 2 big concerns: 1) They didn't like the fact that Channing and The Rock really didn't have any time to develop a friendship before Channing died, and 2) Why wasn't it going to be in 3D? We went back and shot another week with Channing to develop more of his story with The Rock, which made the film play much better. But we didn't have the time to be in 3D. Then a week ago Battleship basically had the same performance as John Carter - $60M-$70M U.S. and just over $200M international. That was just a wake-up call that said to us we need to offer the best version of the film irrespective of summer market share to ensure the best possible performance. And not being in 3D will cost us a ton of business internationally."

They are worried that GI JOE 2 will be another flop. Makes sense. It would be standing next to Spidey. If they think keeping Tatum and developing a relationship between him and The Rock will make a better movie, so be it. I want what they think is the better movie for us.

But, they do realize releasing this in March they will be pulling the same mistake JOHN CARTER did?

I want to see the finished cut RIGHT NOW! So what, they are gonna be changing the ENTIRE movie adding more scenes with Tatum! If Tatum's character dies in the beginning then changing that course of action and keeping him alive will only change many different events that follow throughout the film...

This is a sign of the extreme instability of the domestic box office. Americans are very picky right now at the box office which is why a few movies are blowing up the bank while the rest are barely scraping by or failing miserably. The only stability lies in the international market, so I can definitely buy the concept that they are possibly revamping their marketing push for the international market. Look at Battleship, Tin Tin and John Carter, all have been enormous failures domestically based on their budgets but all 3 have made over 200 million in the international market.

On another note, I'm not so sure that the idea of writing Tatum back into the story has as much to do with his star power as it does with the notion of possibly pi$$ing off the hardcore fan base by killing off the character of Duke.
