A producer from the film explains the film's delay.
"They looked at the landscape and realized they couldn't compete."
Studio chair Brad Grey and vice chair Rob Moore felt the expenses due to the delay were preferable to any possible competition with The Amazing Spider-Man.
They are also planning on adding depth to Channing Tatum's role, who was not a star when the original was made. The actor's character originally dies in this sequel, but it's now possible that his life will be spared.
Stay tuned for more news revolving G.I. Joe Retaliation.
G.I. Joe Retaliation was released March 28th, 2013 and stars Dwayne Johnson, Jonathan Pryce, Byung-hun Lee, Elodie Yung, Ray Stevenson, D.J. Cotrona, Adrianne Palicki, Channing Tatum. The film is directed by Jon M. Chu.

"The actor's character originally dies in this sequel..." Stupid storyline. Abandon it. Hate when a sequel kills off all characters or recasts. No explanation can justify such a bad move by the studio. "...but it's now possible that his life will be spared." Well I guess, if it 'doesn't' happen, you just let out a huge spoiler, lol.

G.I.JOE IS MUCH BETTER IN SCRIPT,CAST AND BUDGET THAN A RIDICOULOUS REBOOT OF A SPIDER.the trailers dont lie.

@shuabert no kidding? wow, would seem to me that they should just sell through the ones on the shelves. the figures and packaging looked a lot more impressive than the last film as well... yes, total waste.

They need to make up their minds when it comes to why this movie is being delayed a whole year...First its to covert it to 3D...then it was they wanted to try and get back JGL and not kill Duke afterall cuz Tatum and JGL are becoming better known actors now a days and to do reshoots...Now its cuz they thought they wouldn't be able to compete with the other big films coming out this summer...i wonder whats gonna come up next as to the reason of the delay
I guess they saw a better chance of competing with Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Man of Steel and whatever else is coming to theaters in 2013

@ i am going to have to disagree. yes the GI joe 2 trailer was good, but i am almost afraid that they have put in all the good parts in the trailer like they did for the first film. at least with spidey, with every trailer comes new scenes that make it even more exciting and fresh.

i just wonder how much they are going to lose on marketing on this. Today i saw the action figures for the film at a store... made me laugh a bit out loud.

It probably also has something to do with anxiety after Battleship's less than stellar debut.

@TheDude1How much you think The Amazing Spiderman will gross in its overall domestic run on a scale of $200-$300?
12 months agoby @cheetoboyFlag
TheDude1
This is a line of BS for sure. Sure Spider Man is going to be big but not that big. It was tracking around 70 million dollars opening weekend. GI Joe could have made about 40 to 50 million opening weekend and a nice 120 million or so domestically total and maybe double that overseas for some profit. Now it won't do any of that after pissing off the fans.

Wouldn't the chemistry between The Rock and Bruce Willis have been enough? I swear if they take out any of Willis' scenes to add Tatum I'll be pissed.
Now for the rest of our lives we're left to wonder: What would the original version have been like? Better...worse? It's gonna kill me wondering the differences!!!

In all honesty they should have kept it at June 29th. GI Joe would have most likely took the weekend (unless People Like Us drew in a lot couples). TASM coming out on a Tuesday is a little awkward. They should have waited for July 6th, that way there G.I. Joe could have a week to make good enough cash for it not to be a MAJOR flop. Oh well, July 3 is my birthday so TASM coming out that day is nothing to complain about haha

@dan1 You're right. I want the movie to just release now too. It looked ready to go and actually pretty awesome. I like Tatum though, especially after 21 Jump Street, so it would've been upsetting to see the main character from the first film killed off. I guess I look at this in a good light and bad.

@XxNickTheFilmCriticXx Oh, they know the term, but from a marketing pov, they made it almost clear the Rock would lead the team with Duke almost confirmed to be KIA. Now, it's just one bad move after the other

Your right@Rome84, not every film should be made for 3-D. As soon as Avatar became the mega success it was hollywood started jumping the band wagon big time, but Avatar was made with special enhanced 3-D technology that no one had seen before, that's why it became the mega hit it was, but when it comes to regular movies they just simply revised them. There were such things as movies being box office hits before 3-D, it seems as though most major studios have forgotten that, there only going to kill the industry with ridiculously high ticket prices for 3-D, or maybe they should find a way for it to be cheaper. But maybe when The Dark Knight Rises which isn't 3-D by the way, comes out and dominates the world, maybee that could be a wake up call to the industry that a movie doesn't half to be in 3-D, as long as its a very f***ing good movie.

@rome84@dan1@Zack-Johnson and everyone else who is saying the should have pushed the movie back only till August; a decent 3D conversion is a process that takes at least about a year. They could've pushed it back till later this year if they kept the movie the same, but if they want to make more money by making it in 3D they need to take the time to convert it.
@renodc Good observation about the US box office. US audiences are getting to a point were they only care about a movie (at least an action movie) if it's already part of a major franchise. You'd think G.I. Joe would be enough but I guess the studio just wants to play it ultra safe. The same thing is happening to videogames; fewer new titles are being released because they can't compete with major sequels like Call Of Duty, etc.
Luckily the rest of the world hasn't fallen to that level, yet at least.
