'Friday the 13th' Reboot May Ditch Jason Voorhees for an All-New Slasher!

Platinum Dunes producer Brad Fuller doesn't confirm a found footage technique but does claim the movie maniac may not even appear in the upcoming horror reboot.
Platinum Dunes producer Bradley Fuller was on hand at the Television Critics Association this weekend to promote his upcoming Starz pirate drama Black Sails as well as the TNT naval drama The Last Ship, and during one of the Q&As, he let slip what could be very big news for the horror world.

Iconic slasher Jason Voorhees may not be the villain of the impending Friday the 13th reboot. When asked if Derek Mears, the actor who played Jason in the 2009 Friday the 13th, was coming back, Fuller made his bold proclamation.

"I don't know, because I don't know if we're going to have Jason. I don't know which Jason we're going to have. I can tell you this: I love Derek Mears, I love working with him and he's a dream so we'd be lucky to have him."

While the series was already 'rebooted' with 2009's Friday the 13th, a sequel to that movie never got off the ground. Paramount got the rights back last year, and they've decided to reboot the franchise a second time. Which could mean a complete overhaul of the entire series.

There has been a lot of noise that this new version will be a found footage movie. Bradley Fuller isn't commited to confirming that idea at this time.

"It's something that we're looking at, yeah. I never know because it depends on the story and what the story is. It's been reported, that's something that we're looking into, but I can't tell you definitively that that's what the movie is.

It's a matter of getting a script that we all love, that we feel like we can execute in a great way. That's always the battle, isn't it?

[It's] a very daunting task."

The producer also talked about the sequel to his micro-budget, mega-success, The Purge 2. The film is already in production.

"The sequel to The Purge delivers on the promise of the original in that we're not staying in the house. It's not a home invasion movie. This is you're out in the streets with people purging and a group of people who get stuck in the middle of it and have to get from point A to point B."

The producer went onto talk about the upcoming thriller Ouija, based on the Hasbro board game. The film is no longer an adventure movie, as originally planned, but it is shooting for a PG-13 rating. Bradley Fuller explains.

"Today is day 17 out of 25. We're shooting it here in Los Angeles. That is a fairly low-budgeted movie. It's the story that you think it is. It's the story about a group of kids who take out a Ouija board and start playing a game, and all hell breaks loose... In our movie, the Ouija board is a communication device. Our kids tap into something horrible and the Ouija board is the way that the entity comes in and is going to have to go out."

Next he turned his attentions to the A Nightmare on Elm Street, which seems all but dead in the water after a disastrous 2010 reboot starring Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy Krueger failed to meet expectations. Will we see a sequel, or a second reboot?

"You know what? I haven't heard a thing. It's a little bit disappointing. We were very proud of that movie. In terms of pure box office, I think that's our highest grossing film worldwide. I'd love to do another one, but I feel that way about all of our films. We don't jump into these films unless we actually loved the characters or the story. I'd love to make Freddy Krueger movies every couple years. It'd be fantastic."

Back in 2010, Jackie Earle Haley was under contract for two more sequels. The producer was a little touchy about the subject.

"I really don't know his deal so I don't know when it runs out, but that's up to New Line and if they want to do it, they will. But no one has talked to us about A Nightmare on Elm Street."

What do you think? If there's no Jason, should they even bother calling it Friday the 13th?

Friday the 13th comes to theaters November 13th, 2015.

None of these reboots work...why not just capitalize on nostalgia and give us sequel to the ORIGINAL franchises...or be smart and go the star trek reboot way - by including the old franchise as cannon and starting anew a the same time. Texas Chainsaw - while an utter piece of garbage - had a great opening where they ignored the lesser sequels and continued from the first. That was a great idea except if was executed so poorly it basically just a waste in the end. But the idea was good. Look at Curse of Chucky - while not perfect (some bad writing and a stupid, stupid ending) the film itself was way better tha a crappy reboot would have been and with just a TAD more polishing it should have been released theatrically and would have brought that franchise back. I honestly don't think ANYONE in hollywood know what there doing...cuz everything is a mess... And this friday idea STINKS! S-T-I-N-K-S, stinks. Found footage? Enough already. No Jason? What's the point? Why not make a few more sequels set after freddy vs jason and end with one jettisoning Jason into outerspace lol?

...And yes I do realize that Jason was not OFFICIALLY the killer in Friday the 13th: A New Beginning and only appeared as a hallucination BUT the iconic imagery of that character persists making it a fine installment in the franchise.

Taking Jason out of Friday the 13th is ridiculous. Even if they reboot it and start with his mother as the killer as in the original film they still HAVE to have mentions of Jason and flashbacks.

They thought it was a good idea to take Michael Myers out of Halloween once.....ONCE.

That would be the dumbest move they ever made if they don't use Jason! Friday the 13th without Jason Voorhees is not a Friday the 13th movie. Creating a new killer for the series would be a HUGE mistake!!!! Get real, Bradley Fuller! DON'T TAKE AWAY JASON OR BE HATED BY THE FANS FOREVER!!! Who will go see your films then if you do???

  9. Xenon

@jasonkat that sounds like a better idea.
The reboot was meant for the best killing spree from 2- 5.
She went bat crazy when Jason died, which would trigger a killing spree since she's not sane of mind.
All of the Friday the 13th films have no story, it's just about the nightmare of what one undead person does.

there is NO Friday the 13th without Jason... and quite frankly they need to use Kane Hodder as Jason.

    @thedude1
I know his mom came b4 him in the friday the 13th films. I hope thats what hes talking about and not something off.
If i could reboot such film as this1. i would go way back to the roots, birth, the days when jason was a baby/kid/teen and how he grew up being made fun of in school. on the school bus, at camp.,ect. and how his mother was fed up with it and 1 day she had enough of it and went on a killing spree. i would make this between 1-4 or 5 films b4 handing it over to jason himself as a grown man. People would then know the backstories of those days in the 80s, not 2009,
I think the remake however was a great film, i would make that my part 6 if i could. i think 5 would be the last of his mother which picks up at the begining of the remake. I would then bring back the bro/sis from the remake cause i personally dont think they died, it left it to your imagination.
Bottom line i would make it worth watching every step of the way, i might change a few things, take it a diff direction but the same story we all know, would still be there. we would just find out more that we dont know, it would have some twist you'll never see coming.

  16. TheDude1

@bellandedward1@adamsandlerfggot69@jasonkat Jason was not the killer in the original Friday the 13th film, remember that. So maybe he was simply hinting at his mother being the killer again.

  17. TheDude1

If Jason is not the killer his mother would have to be the killer. Simple as that. If that is the case I highly doubt the twist that was in the original movie would work this time around.

Paramount is stupid. They got the rights back to this printing machine, and they are dogging it big time. Make a sequel to the original series and have fun with that.

  18. Johnny1312

Wow, these directors now a days will do anythimg for money. Even if it includes ruining the character of Jason voorhees. Are you serious? You guys think you're going to get big bucks for making a "frifay the 13" without jason? Especially if you're going to make it like a paranormal activity type sh*t. Just a waste

As much as a movie buff as I am sorry but you can not have a Friday the 13th movie without Jason if he not in the movie then please don't spoil the movie by adding or changing thing around as it can affect people who care unlike some who want to continue making reboots the series had already been rebooted so in general a sequel is needed but rebooting the sequel a third time

Last i checked, The Purge was a stupid ass movie, this guy makes it seem like it as a masterpiece, and that Purge 2 will be even better. who the hell is he kidding?
So now they wanna ditch jason and create a whole new monster, ? can some1 tell me why? you dont do that, you cant do that. "friday the 13" and jason is an icon. same as freddy and elm street, tx chainsaw and leatherface. If he wants to give us a wole new thing, then give us it but use your own name.
Thats like taking the name "king kong" and giving us something that is not related to to kong. the fans are gonna hate this idea, or they will be pissed because they will go out and watch friday the 13th, thinking its another jason movie, only to realized its nothing they had plans on seeing.
