Fredrik Bond to Direct The Host

Universal Pictures and Gore Verbinski are planning a remake of the 2006 Bong Joon-ho-directed Korean thriller The Host, and has set Fredrik Bond to make his feature directorial debut and Mark Poirier (Smart People) to write the script.

According to Variety, the story follows a town terrorized by a giant mutant squidlike creature hatched by toxins that flow into a nearby river from a military base. When the creature grabs a little girl, her dysfunctional family must band together to rescue her.

Verbinski will produce with Vertigo's Roy Lee and Doug Davison, along with Paul Brooks.

The film, originally titled Gwoemul, did record-breaking business in its theatrical run in South Korea.

Bond has directed commercial campaigns for Nike, Adidas and Levi's. He and Verbinski had been looking for a project to do together, and Bond said he embraced the opportunity to mix a larger-than-life monster with a heartfelt family drama.

No production date has been set.

Cloverfield was great for a 'Hollywood Monster Movie' - way better than Godzilla - but still ot as good as The Host. I agree with err - the characters in Cloverfield were LAME. No originality there.

I actually loved Cloverfield...but I don't want to get into that. I haven't seen the Host, though...I'll have to get on that

i agree with err on this one. Cloverfield was awful and i liked the original but this is sounding like it hs the potential to be just as bad as Cloverfield is what i was trying to say.

    why is that moviemaniac?
    because it made more money?
or because it was so gay?

don't get me wrong, the monster was awesome but the story and the characters were mind-numbingly lame... in my opinion.

Cloverfield was monumentally better than The Host. I am still against this remake though.

so they're remaking another chinese movie but at least its not a ghost story.

the host came out before cloverfield though, and had a better story and a more believable monster. and no teeny bopper "wheres my girlffriend" bullsh*t or irratic nausea-inducing camera work.

the original is freaking great, in my opinion, despite its off-kilter pacing. the monster was awesome.

that scene, for instance, where you first see the fish monster in all its glory, running up the shore knocking people over was just fantastic.

i don't have much faith in verbinski though, his work has been sort of hit or miss with me.

Seriously! Come on this is stupid, there is absolutely no reason to do this, because it will never be as good as the original.

I was impressed with the special effects in the original and liked it so much I purchased the movie. I am beginning to think Universal has a whole department dedicated to remakes. Other countries are going to start to think that the US can not come up with an original idea.

I'm sorry but in no way was the original horrible. Hollywood is just gonna ruin it. Just like they did with 'The Grudge', 'The Ring' and 'Darkwater'.
