Fox Still Desperately Trying to Re-Boot Planet of the Apes with a Prequel

Fox looking to reboot Planet of the Apes with a prequel
According to Vulture, the prequel to Planet of the Apes continues to evolve at Twentieth Century Fox.

Insiders tell Vulture that producer and former News Corporation president Peter Chernin has been having trouble interesting the top tier of directors in swinging aboard: He has had discussions with Kathryn Bigelow, Robert Rodriguez, and Tomas Alfredson, but all of them have declined.

Chernin and Fox are so intent on making this movie that they're progressing right down to the next level of meat-and-potatoes action directors: The tightly controlled script, called Caesar, has now been circulated to Albert and Allen Hughes (The Book of Eli); Pierre Morel (Taken); James McTeigue (Ninja Assassin); Dennis Illiadis (The Last House on the Left), and Scott Stewart (Legion).

The last Planet of the Apes movie was salvaged by Tim Burton in 2001.

Planet of the Apes was released July 27th, 2001 and stars Mark Wahlberg, Tim Roth, Helena Bonham Carter, Michael Clarke Duncan, Paul Giamatti, Estella Warren, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, David Warner. The film is directed by Tim Burton.

BURTONs remake is what a remake should be...DIFFERENT FROM THE ORIGINAL!!!

the story needed to be a little tighter. The eye candy of estella warren wasn't enough to pull her talentless corpse through the film, same goes with the wallberg, constantly looking surprised. The ending was cool.

Slysnide,,,Sorry, but thats wasn't what happend...Tims take is simple. Instead of a future where the origianls went, Tims went back in time. All of the aps and crew of the space station was sent farther in the past. So when Marks character thought he was going back in time, to where he thought he was from,,, he was realing going foward. Mark247365,,, Just becouse it is flawed, dosn't mean it is not a classic. There are many films with alot of flaws, that becomes classics. I know it had issues, but if Fox wants to go with it, I would rather see a sequal off of Tims then a sad attempt of another one.

Tim Burton is a great/visionary director BUT his Planet Of The Apes remake/reimagining/reboot - whatever you want to call it - was blotted his copybook big style!!!!! He stepped in very late to complete the film after numerous directors walked and it clearly shows he was rushed. Based on the scope this franchise has, it is only right Fox wants to move forward in getting the franchise up-and-running again!

Anyone that thinks his version is a classic film is NOT a Burton fan as he even accepts it was flawed!!!!

@Josh: The 2001 version? Yeah it did, the military ape guy found the capsule on his own and used the space/time continuum to return to Earth before humans took off as the lead species. The chimp being the anticedent to them all garnered respect and obedience from the apes. Plus it needed such an ending to measure up to the original's iconic final shot.

As for Fox, why they are so desperate to push a remake/rehash is beyond me. The franchise died years ago with all four sequels or what not. The 2001 revitalization wasn't received as well as expected, so rather than let the franchise die to pursue more original stories that never see the light of day, they're pushing for this? Weird.

I don't even think Tim Burton understood what was going on in that movie. The ending made no sense whatsoever.

    lol, agreed JEFFERSON.

Peter Jackson would be great but somehow i don't think he'll go for this. No complaints with Burtons' take on the APES, except of course casting a real 'ape' in the lead! MARK WALLBERG!

  7. SarCCastro

Actually, it's supposed to be a small movie about the first ape that can talk. The script was written a while ago by Scott Frank(who wrote Get Shorty, Out Of Sight and The Lookout, which he also directed). If it becomes a huge action movie, I'll know they messed with it a bunch.

someone will grab it, I would like to see Peter Jackson directing it. It would be epic then.

I think a reboot could be cool. Burton's was pretty sh*t. But i will be waiting for the DVD.

The only reason Kathryn Bigelow made the cut was because of the brilliant filmmaking technique exercised in The Hurt Locker: y'know, "gorilla" style... ;P

i would give a standing applause to every director that turns down fox on this movie......

The Hughes Brothers could make a bad-ass planet of the apes. McTeigue is a pretty good choice too.

I thought Tim's was great. I want to see that continued. No reboot needed. How about Tim does a simple sequal?

  14. The Narrator: The Better Man

And @Raven, Katheryn is an amazing director for her two big movies. I mean she did Point Break. Thats major props and then of course Hurt Locker. But she wouldn't fit the bill and I am not surprised at all she turned it down but shocked they offered it to her.

Fox should sell it to Dreamworks. They need some more big budget series under their belt besides Transformers and Tintin coming up. thats my two cents.

I totally agree with the previous post. Of course no good director will accept it in that way.

especially when it's a "tightly controlled script". can you say zero creativity or input from the creative team? a corporate product? new toys? can you say "no thanks"?

they are looking for a trained monkey. or ape...

I was watching this the other night, I own the newer and the original.
This is what I think, that he returned to the same planet without releasing it. I would love to have Burton and Mark back just to finish his story off.

I Just watched The Remake of this on HBO last night .. i liked it (Spolier) and i wld like to kno when Mark Whalberg returns to earth why the world was like that i thought everything was suppose to be fine so if they make another one Tim Roth and Mark Whalberg should be in it.. But they need to explain some sh*t!

It means that Tim Burton remade the film in his image back in 2001. Ha, I liked that film and I still do despite the main actor, just wish prequels and reboots would fade out.
What next an Mission Impossible reboot? God I sure hope not but I wouldn't put them past it.
