Fantastic Four Reboot Eyes Chronicle Director Josh Trank

Director Josh Trank wanted for Fantastic Four reboot
20th Century Fox is currently eyeing Chronicle director Josh Trank to take over the helm of their Fantastic Four reboot. But the studio is waiting to see how Chronicle, his directorial debut, opens over Super Bowl weekend before officially offering him the job.

Chronicle is a found-footage faux-documentary about a group of three high school friends who acquire an extraordinary set of telepathic powers. This superhero thriller is garnering a lot of buzz inside the filmmaking world, and word is 20th Century Fox has a hit on their hands. Though, fans of the genre can be quite fickle, so these types of movies are never a sure thing.

Fox is currently awaiting the latest draft of Fantastic Four from Michael Green, who, honestly, didn't really do all that well with his last project Green Lantern. This new Fantastic Four is a complete overhaul of 2005's Fantastic Four and 2007's Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, offering a tweaked spin on the mythology and an entirely new cast.

Alongside Fantastic Four, 20th Century Fox is also continuing to move forward on the stand-alone R rated X-Men spin-off Deadpool, as well as a revamped Daredevil. 20th Century Fox owns these Marvel properties in perpetuity as long as they keep making films based on them.

It is likely that Fantastic Four will be the next Marvel adventure from the studio.

Fantastic Four comes to theaters March 6th, 2015. The film is directed by Josh Trank.

@ejk1 I don't want you to think I'm mocking you because I'm not. I'm saying this with a smile on my face, but your first sentence is hilarious to me. Someone needs to put that sh*t on a poster, lol. 'Poor, pitiful Sony. They only made 900 million off the last one. Whadda you expect them to do?' Lmao!!

Anyway, I agree. Although, I would argue they are in the business of art, but I get your meaning; they're in the business of art to make money, regardless of the quality of that art.

@thedude-abides "Spider-Man will have been 5 years since the last one"

Yeah. But when the film five years ago took in just under 900 million, what do you expect Sony to do. I think we've had this discussion before, but here goes: Film studios are not in the business of art; they are in the business of making money. Spider-Man makes boat loads of money, as do other properties comic and otherwise (Transformers, for example). You ask when will it be enough? The answer is when these films stop making the big bucks. That is not likely to happen anytime soon.

I think it would be better if they made Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman in their early to mid 30's since they are the precursor of superheroes since 1961 even before The Avengers and The X-Men were created! It would also give levity on being a lot more mature than Ioan and Jessica's take on the couple (trying hards)

Charlize Theron would be awesome to play the role and maybe they could pull in the likes of George Clooney but I doubt he would like to play someone who elongates his body now and then, he's a natural act for someone who can really be a on a "genius level". Jon Hamm or better Billy Crudup would be great as well!

Chris Evans was the standout among the Four to portray the role, Chris Pine would be great to fill in the shoes of the flaming romeo and still make the audience laugh! Ben Grimm for me should be a at the same age as Reed Richards with kind heart and a fighting spirit no one can falter, many have suggested Bruce Willis is the man, he's one of the finest in the business but I don't know if he would like to play another Armageddon but hey, if he's Ben I'm fine with it but really hoping they'll go for the CGI take on theThing, it will bring more presence to the character and be big enough to compare with the other three, Michael Chiklis looked like a boulder rather than a man mountain when he's with the team!

The reboot is too soon, Fox is just on a very short leash to produce a FF film while the rights is still with them, Marvel put a stamp into it a get back your properties asap!

PS: speaking of the Director, kind a of ironic Tim's "Story" has no flare not even a spark to make give this CBM a solid take! All the best to Chronicle and the Director!

@ejk1@felipe-11 Okay, but that isn't my reason for being against this. I was just agreeing with @corey's point on the matter, which he was right on about. It shouldn't be an origins tale -- we're all in agreement on that. My point is this: measure twice, cut once. All this repackaging is ridiculous. Spider-Man will have been 5 years since the last one, and wasn't it right after GL came out they talked about doing a reboot? I mean come on.

@corey I agree with @ejk1 , Ryan Reynolds is too much even though I like him. How about Bradley Cooper instead? Tom Hardy would be great, but I doubt he'd take another comic book role so soon unless it was a really great script. Ackerman is a good choice too, but how about Charlize Theron? Or Olivia Wilde?

    1 year agoby @felipe-11Flag

  12. ejk1

@corey Reynolds is a no-go. How many comic characters can he concurrently play? I think two (GL, Deadpool) are enough. Brody and Ackerman are good picks. Hardy probably wouldn't want to jump back into comic book land that quickly, and if he did, he'd be better as solo star, in my opinion. But what about Dr. Doom? He has to make an appearance.

@ejk1 Malin Akerman as Invincible Woman? Adrien Brody as Mr. Fantastic? Tom Hardy as The Thing? And Ryan Reynolds as The Human Torch?

    Cool enough cast.

@thedude-abides Well, the first FF film was seven years ago. Since there is no cast or story in place, I don't really expect a film until late 2013, or even pushed back to 2014. Either way, it is pretty close to a decade.

@felipe-11 Agreed about how FF doesn't have to start with an origin story. I said that Amazing Spider-Man should have begun about six months after being bitten, but Sony didn't go that route. Oh well. Still, these films do not have to begin with origin tales.

@corey Agreed about waiting to see how Chronicle pans out before deciding on Trank's possible involvement.

Casting for this film will be crucial. I have no ideas. Anyone else have a few?

idk about this but i shall wait till i see "Chronicle" to judge. Idk about giving unknown directors chances nowadays. Look at that director Jonathan Liebesman. Ppl said he would do "Wrath of the titans" justice by just looking at the trailer for "Battle: Los Angeles" and that movie suckedddddd

@thedude-abides A reboot doesn't necessarily mean they'll have another origin story. Look at The Incredible Hulk, it was a reboot and it just had a brief 2-minute explanation during the opening credits. After that, we we're fully set in a world where the Hulk already was the Hulk, but with absolutely no ties to the disastrous 2003 Hulk.

A reboot just means its not related to previous entries with the franchise. It's just sometimes they wanna make that completely clear for people and the easiest way to do it is having an origin story.

And I'm sorry, but F4 was in DESPERATE need of a reboot. Both movies were already a bit silly (to say the least) when they came out, but they are completely unbearable in a post-Dark Knight world.

I'm sure Marvel Studios would do a better job themselves, but with the right story and director, Fox might just nail it.

  18. FrankenFate

Well It's already been said that after "The Dark Knight Rises" comes out then another reboot is made. But as for Fantastic Four, I just realized that even though a movie is getting rebooted then it doesn't matter if they use the same cast cause the point of a reboot is to redo the story of the movie franchise, not redo the cast.

Marvel are really caught in a CATCH 22 over the film rights of their characters... With Fox and Sony maintaining the rights of properties such as Fantastic Four, Daredevil, X-Men (Fox) and Spider-Man (Sony), HOPES that Marvel will retain these characters are SLIM.

Apart from forking over an EXTRAORDINARY amount of cash, the only other way they can get the rights back is if the said studios are no longer interested in making films using said characters above. But can anyone REALLY see this happening?! It is Hollywood after all, and, unfortunately for us, the fans, the film studios are going to suck these franchises dry, for every last cent, before they will hand back the rights to Marvel.

Daredevil was released by Fox in 2003, and a sequel/reboot is said to STILL be "in development"... Fox also recently released X-Men Origins: First Class, so no doubt that will spawn sequels, as well as the follow-up to X-Men Origins: Wolverine... After the atrocity that was Spider-Man 3, Sony pushed to reboot the Spider-Man franchise with the soon-to-be released The Amazing Spider-Man, which will also no-doubt kick off it's own re-invigorated franchise... *sigh*

So as long as those cash registers keep ringing in the cinemas, Fox and Sony are going to keep their Marvel properties "in development" for as long as they can. Which sucks, as this also leaves us, the Marvel fans in a CATCH 22 also...

We want to see our beloved characters up on the big screen, in all their glory, kicking ass and doing it in the MIGHTY MARVEL MANNER! BUT in order to do this, we are going to have to endure some really bad movies from Fox and Sony... And even then they are STILL going to be reluctant to hand back the rights... Oh well, at least we have The Avengers to forward to! : )

This is all just my humble opinion of course, and I thank you for taking the time to read it :)

  24. Corey W.

@thedude-abides Well said. I don't understand why it must be a reboot. Why not just make a movie where the Fantastic Four is already assembled?

Like once TDKR ends, if Warners wants to make another Batman movie so desperatly, don't reboot it, but make another Batman adventure! People already know the story, so why not just start a place where Batman is already Batman, ya know?

  25. thedude-abides

you gotta be f*cking kidding me... Do it right the first time, let it stand on its own for 10 years, then do a remake if need be. These reboots every couple years are damn ridiculous. I can't wait to see how long it takes Warners to do another Batman movie after Nolan moves on. I'm willing to bet it won't exceed 8 years.

Pretty crazy move, which isn't like Fox but I like it. Chronicle looks like it's going to be epic but we will see. And I don't know how Marvel is going to do it, but in the long run in order for Marvel to progress their stories they are going to need the rights back to all of their characters.
