X-Men: First Class is garnering nothing but rave reviews from its first select screenings, and the movie is looking like a certified hit. Which, of course, means we will be getting a sequel sometime in the near future. With fifteen mutants on hand and counting, this first prequel already seems stuffed to the brim with characters. We recently got the chance to talk exclusively with director Matthew Vaughn about the ensemble nature of these movies, and how adding more faces to a sequel might throw off the perfect balance he has found here.

Matthew Vaughn revealed that the X-Men: First Class sequel will only be adding one major new character. Who will that character be, though? The director refuses to say so early out.

Here is what Matthew Vaughn had to say about the addition of only one major new character in the proposed X-Men: First Class Sequel.

"We will only have one more new character. I won't say who he...I won't say who he or she is! But we will only be bringing one more new character in. Because, I think, as Professor X is in a wheelchair, Magneto needs to have a nemesis he can fight with. Someone that will be his equal. I know who it is. It would be nice if I could say something, but I can't, mate!"

Matthew Vaughn also doesn't rule out the possibility of Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Patrick Stewart showing up in the sequel via a flash-forward.

"I have worked with Sir Ian McKellen before, and he is a lovely guy. I would love to work with him again. So, never say never!"

X-Men: First Class was released June 3rd, 2011 and stars James McAvoy, Laurence Belcher, Michael Fassbender, Bill Milner, Kevin Bacon, Rose Byrne, Jennifer Lawrence, Beth Goddard. The film is directed by Matthew Vaughn.

I'd like to see Mimic in the next movie, that would be bad ass..for those who don't know who Mimic is..He copies other mutants' powers and abilities, sometimes permanently. He retained the original five X-Men's powers indefinitely. He would be an awesome addition.

It's not Wolverine, because Charles didn't have extensive knowledge of him in the first film. Neither did Magneto. The movie played Wolverine like a red herring, making everyone think WOlverine was the special one, when it was actually Rogue.

As for who it is, let's remember to keep this within the context of the film series as it stands. Unless X Men: Wolverine has officially been taken out of continuity, it can't be Cyclops, Gambit, etc. If thought of really hard, we can simply use the process of elimination to figure this out. It may be a time traveler like Cable or Bishop, but who knows.

@dandogd I was going to say almost the same thing.

"Because, I think, as Professor X is in a wheelchair, Magneto needs to have a nemesis he can fight with."

I think this was an involuntary comment of Vaughn. I didn't want to know such spoiler. In anycase, It's doesn't look good to me. Charles and Erik are bulding their friendship in the film and then f*cking it up too soon.

It seems will have a hairless and paralytic James McVoy in the hall second movie.

One thing I was wondering about, which Vaugn just confirmed here, that Xavier is paralyzed in this film, doesn't Xavier walk out of the helicopter in the Wolverine movie? As people have said, its set in the 70s, and first class is set in the 60s, so doesn't that break the whole prequel thing? I'm not dissing the movie or anything, just curious?

When will we get to see Apocalypse, who originally suppose to be considered the greatest of all the mutant villains, even stronger than Magneto.

Mister Sinister, Shadowking or En Sabah Nur!

Yea seeing apocalypse on the big screen would be a nice match for the xmen and brotherhood. I think adding omega red would be good but u would need wolverine in it as well.

Wolverine wouldn't make any sense. He can't even get close to Magneto without Magneto knowing he is there. Besides like I said adding him to the movie discredits the previous xmen films. Honestly I think it will be cyclops or jean. Unless vaughn says screw the last movies and cast another wolverine. Much like dc is doing with jla by having a different Batman and superman. But wolverine will get killed my Magneto.

Really if they want an interesting character who ties into Magneto's storyline and is very powerful, it should be the Scarlett Witch. Just a thought.

  19. CUPID

@incmob Yeah, maybe with all you just said about Magneto Wolverine can give him a fight but it wont be that good Magneto would still beat him in no time.

    3 years agoby @cupidFlag

  20. incmob

@cupid good question. My thoughts are this... magneto is still young... passionate yes, but full of anger, that their kind is misunderstood and is a minority, freaks, unwanted, unloved, which can make someone very sloppy, or causes them to make mistakes, because they cant base it on being calculative, they can only base it on their emotions, and ideals. Where we saw magneto vs. wolverine in the old trilogy, magneto has come into his own, honed his craft, and the roles were a bit reversed, where wolverine was full of rage, and confused, not knowing who he was, what he was doing, where he was going. However... if wolverine is indeed in the sequel, i think he could certainly give magneto a run for his money, having the experience that he has had, there is no doubt that it really is rock, paper, scissors, and magneto would have a bit of an upperhand with his abilities, but i think logan is like an animal and goes on instinct... it would definately be a good fight, but i dont think that is what they would have in mind if he was to be in it.

  21. CUPID

@incmob Ok, but do you think that Wolverine is equal to Magneto and can give him a good fight after seeing the last trilogy?

  22. Brizzy

@superman81 .... do you know how old he is? Wolverine I mean. Im not saying that he'll be in the next one, maybe in the very ending of the movie, after creds or something.

    3 years agoby @BrizzyFlag

  23. incmob

@superman81 to say wolverine would be an old man compared to the rest of the cast, it is well known that wolverine actually ages much slower than most people... not immortal, but does age slower. secondly this is a prequel to singers films... not a reboot so to speak, and not a remake... and with Matthew Vaughn stating that sir ian mckellan could be in it... that would not fit in the series, so what other option is there... a flash forward to singers original timeframe, which wolverine could have a cameo... not necessarily be in the film, but a cameo. also (although most people discredit the wolverine origins.) look at the time frame of wolverine origins. they were executed during the time of the vietnam war. 6 years later and wolverine has started a new life, which would put that time frame roughly in the early to mid seventies. The first class sequel is tentatively supposed to take place in the 70's, the new one is taking place in the 60's... so there is no reason for wolverine not to make an appearance before he started a new life with kayla. so i think that your theory is off, and it could be worked in the next film to have logan in it

@superman81 You are one passionate nerd. Thanks for the scintillating response. I believe many of us know Wolverine will not be in the next film, but it is quite entertaining to hypothesis the notion that he could be.
As opposed to disrespecting and informing us that our playful theories are "bullsh*t", please share your opinion as to whom you think the new character could be. I'm quite curious.
    Thank you.

  25. Superman81

No I'm sorry but you people besides @cupid are totally wrong. They are not going to put Wolverine as the new X-MEN. First off this is set during the beginning of them becoming the xmen. And if they bring in someone to wolverine then it totally discredits Singer's films and Wolverine Origins. He didn't f*cking know Charles in that movie either. Ur little theories about it being Wolverine are bullsh*t. And I'm a wolverine fan. Besides Jackman would look like an old man compared to Fassbender Magneto and the rest of the younger cast. It would be dumb as hell to cast someone else for the Wolverine role.

    3 years agoby @superman81Flag

  26. Teunis

Well, I guess it could be Wolverine. There was rumour of it previously, more of a joke actually. But, consider this:
Wolverine post-adamantium implant has no memory of Wolverine pre-adamantium. He could have fought Magneto in his original mutant state, no metals for Magneto to manipulate. And backs J.P's theory/fact that Magneto and Professor X have extensive knowledge of him.
    Thoughts?

Wolverine wouldn't be coming in as a teen, he would be an adult. And just because he gets his ass kicked doesn't mean he won't be coming in, if that was the case he wouldn't be in any of the films.
