EXCLUSIVE: Will Chris Nolan Recast the Joker for Batman 3 or Will the Riddler Take His Place?

Movie Picture
While conducting interviews with the cast of The Dark Knight this afternoon, I got a chance to chat with director Christopher Nolan and Gary Oldman about the proposed third segment of their supposed Batman trilogy. While none of us in attendance really wanted to dwell on the death of Heath Ledger, Oldman offered his thoughts on the actor's portrayal of the Joker, calling it the scariest on-screen performance he's ever seen.

He even went on to compare it to his own work as Sirius Black, saying, "Sirius Black might scare six year olds, but he doesn't scare nine year olds. It's hard to scare kids these days. Heath does. He scares everybody. This is one of the most frightening performances I have ever seen put on film." When asked if he thought they should recast Ledger for the third film, or just not include the character, Gary thought it was a good idea, "I don't see why not. I mean, they did it with Katie Holmes' character. I understand that this is a different circumstance, but I think another actor could do the job. I think Heath would want another actor to do the job."

Oldman then took a moment to think about it some more, "Maybe we don't need the Joker. Because we'll have The Riddler." Yes, Oldman alluded to the fact that The Riddler may in fact be the next on-screen Batman villain.

When I asked if he, himself, wanted to come back for a third segment, he smiled coyly, "We don't really know if Nolan is coming back." He then shook his head. "I guess I have to come back." He then put his hand to the side of his mouth as if to hide the next line from everybody, "Nolan will come back for a third one. I think we all have to." It is well known that Oldman tried to get out of appearing in The Dark Knight, but his contract wouldn't allow it.

Next, I asked Christopher Nolan if he wanted to come back for a third Batman film, and he said that he wasn't sure that he wanted to come back, "I don't know. I take my projects one at a time, and I am not thinking about that right now. I don't know if I want to come back." After that, I asked, "If you do choose to make a third Batman film, do you think that you would recast for the Joker? Or will he not appear in the film?"

Nolan's replay, "I don't know. I honestly have not taken a moment away from what is going on with the film now to even think about that. I don't know. I simply don't know."

The Dark Knight opens July 18th, 2008.

    they should make a batman movie where its 20 yrs later and bring jack nicholson back as an older more demented joker...

    @slysnide I like your suggestions.

    Personally I think it would be cool to see Wayne undercover, for half of a film as he gathers clues of who is either killing or smuggling. We've seen the suite too much, I would like to see the title as follows. Batman: Detective

    Better question: Presuming that Nolan will solidify Batman & Catwoman's "relationship" and finish off Bane & Talia in the next movie (face it, with Ducard in flashbacks, then she's in it, and Bane doesn't sound a returning villain), and considering that Nolan has said he'll produce future sequels, then will the Riddler be in Batman 4? And since Nolan intends to conclude Bruce's journey in a film whose title implies Batman will rise--redeemed or whatnot--then can Thomas Elliot be thrown in for a personal angle in Batman 4 to make an homage to the Riddler/Hush story? For really, with Rachel dead, and the implications for "Rises" being in motion, then there's not much of a personal angle to work with for more sequels, given that Nolan intends to conclude Bruce's story arc, yet says he'll produce more sequels. Thoughts?

    Why bother having someone play the role of the Joker in the Dark Knight sequel. Heath Ledger already played the Joker. They should have someone play the role of the Riddler in the Dark Knight sequel instead.

    no doubt he is gonna bring us something fresh and brutal at the same time this guy really knows what the hell he was doing, if only other directors had his talent cinema wouldn't be going to sh*t right now

    I'm actually not worried at all about the next installment in the batman franchise, primarly because christopher nolan has proven himself more than capable of not only bringing us a kick ass batman film, but who he chooses in his films and bringing the best in there talents. Like inception for instance, that movie blew me completely away, not only by his near expert directing, but how convincing the characters were.

    have to disagree with you on that @Cyn de Harven i was honestly blown away by his portrayal of the joker, i know the day will come when it has to be done again, but i dont see it happening for 5 to 10 years

    Thought he'd already put the kibosh on this idea.

    @Remy72883
    Wellll....they also said that no one could play the Joker like Nicholson. I'm sure there will one day be a replacement for Heath. (am I only the only person in the world who thought he was 'good' but wasn't blown away by his performance?)

    we'll see, it will happen. maybe not now or even five years from now or 20, but it will happen. and nothing is ever that simple.

  25. Remy72883

    yeah no one can replace heath its that SIMPLE

  26. DoubleC

    The best thing is to have low expectations of the next one rather than contiplate 'oh no one can ever top heath's performance because the joker was nothing until heath came along' and oh my favorite ' no one will ever be able to play the joker for a long time because he was just that awesome', if your expectations are low you will never be dissappointed. And no one is that awesome except chuck norris, so maybe chuck could play the joker and roundhouse kick batman in the back of the palce and destroy all that is...okay so maybe im done ranting now.

    Thank God there is no Robin in Nolan's Batmans.

    2 years agoby @dan1Flag

  30. Remy72883

    Robin will never be in the Nolan version's of batman he has said it to many times, their will be no robin cause it looses focused on batman's development i mean the main reason why robin was brought in the first place was without Burton directing the 3rd one and without Keaton they had to do something to get people to come back for the series,
